Ventures Guard, Scout House Cadets Drum Line Marching Together

| |

Members of the Ventures colour guard will march together with the Preston Scout House Cadets drum line for the first time in the Canada Day parade through downtown Preston on July 1.

The Canada Day event will be the first local parade for the Scout House Cadets, formed last September as a new youth activity for local boys and girls by Preston Scout House Alumni Band. The Ventures are normally involved only in indoor winter competitions, with their season ending in April.

The joint appearance will enhance the visual appeal of the Cadets drum line and extend the activity for members of the Ventures, who normally don’t march in parades. The two groups will march as one unit on July 1, with the Ventures in front of the Cadets during the parade on King Street.

Both youth groups have performed separately in two indoor shows earlier this year, with the Cadets performing at the Ventures colour guard exhibition in Waterloo and the Ventures performing in Preston Memorial Auditorium during the Scout House Alumni Band’s annual Spring Opening concert.

The Preston Scout House Cadets drum line, scheduled to expand to a full drum and bugle corps this fall, was founded last September as part of the recruiting campaign organized to mark the 75th anniversary in 2013 of Preston Scout House Band, which originated in 1938 as an activity for members of the 1st Preston Boy Scout troop. The original Scout House Cadets served as a feeder group for the band through the 1950s and 1960s.

The Ventures originated in 1972 as a highly successful all girl drum and bugle corps, winning five Drum Corps International (DC) world titles between 1972 and 1994. The Ventures became a winter colour guard operation after the drum and bugle corps ceased activity in the 1990s.
