Introducing The 2014 Mandarins Brass Staff

The Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps are pleased to announce the 2014 Brass Staff. We are pleased that all of the brass educational staff will be returning from the successful 2013 season. In addition, several educators have been added who bring additional experience, energy and enthusiasm for continued growth to the brass program.

Dan Fong
Brass Co-Caption Head

After marching nine years with the Sacramento Mandarins and the Seattle Imperials, Dan was the Mandarins’ brass caption head from 1982 to 1993 and from 2005 to 2008, during which the Mandarins won three of their eight DCI World Championship titles. He returned in 2012 as the brass caption head and will continue his tenure in 2013. He currently instructs and arranges music for the Mandarins Brass Academy, a program that teaches brass students of all skill levels in the Sacramento region. Dan has written every Mandarins field show from 1982 until 2011. He has also worked with numerous brass sections in the Sacramento region conducting clinics for C. K. McClatchy High School, J.F. Kennedy High School (music arranger and instructor,) Sacramento High School, Elk Grove High School, Cordova High School and West Campus High School where he served the program consultant. He has also been a guest conductor for the Sacramento Youth Symphony. His teaching influences include Rick South, Wayne Downey, Scott Pierson, Key Poulan, Mike Duffy, Roger Breakfield, Ben Fong, Ritchey Hodges and Billy Collins. In his spare time he enjoys playing with the Jim Ott Brass Ensemble under the leadership of Bonnie Ott and Billy Collins. Dan is an optometrist in Sacramento where he resides with his wife Patty and two trumpeter sons, Kyle and Jared. In addition to his involvement with the marching arts, Dan leads a worship praise team for his RCA church in Sacramento.
