Santa Clara Vanguard Announces 2014 Program
In the summer of 2014, Santa Clara Vanguard will perform Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.
A quintessential fairy tale can be inspirational and intriguing when enhanced by a great storyteller—and one of the greatest in the history of literature is the focus of Santa Clara Vanguard’s 2014 show: Scheherazade: Words 2 Live By.
For the soundtrack, the corps once again interprets Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s distinctive orchestral work, which was inspired by the folk tales and legends Sherherazade tells in One Thousand and One Nights (sometimes known as Arabian Nights). But this time, the action picks up after her 1,001-night trial, as she reflects upon her own experiences, when telling a good story was literally a matter of life or death. Along the way, many of the characters that inhabit Scheherazade’s tales—genies, warriors, thieves, enchanted beings, and more—come to life in an exciting story of adventure, riches, and love.
