Scout House Cadets Receive Community Foundation Grant
Scout House Cadets drum and bugle corps of Cambridge has been awarded a $1,440 grant toward the purchase of new uniforms from the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation (CNDCF) a public, charitable foundation created by and for the people of the city of Cambridge and North Dumfries Township, the largely rural area around Cambridge.
CNDCF is an independent centre for community philanthropy and serves as a trusted resource for addressing and leveraging opportunities in the community. In collaboration with many donors and partners, CNDCF provides funding to a broad range of programs, initiatives and organizations, accepting applications from registered charities and municipalities to meet its mission.
Preston Scout House Band, Inc. is a non-profit Corporation incorporated under the Corporations Act of the Province of Ontario on November 29, 1956, with registered charity status, able to issue tax receipts to donors. Scout House Cadets fall into several priority areas for CNDCF funding in 2014. The foundation’s priorities are:
- arts and culture
- children and youth in recreation
- children (under the age of 12) at risk
- early literacy
- food security
The Cadets fund raising program includes ongoing sales of grocery cards that can be redeemed in all of Ontario’s leading supermarkets. Since late last year, the Cadets support team has sold cards with face value of more than $16,000, which has earned more than $800 for the corps.
The Cadets, with Scout House Band participation, will be presenting a major fund raising project on Saturday, July 26 in cooperation for area Ford dealers. As part of the Ford Drive for your Community fundraising event, Ford donates $20 for every household test drive during the day. The event to be based at the Cambridge Hotel will also include a fund raising barbecue.
The CNDCF grant to the Cadets will be applied immediately to the purchase of new bib-front uniform pants. Some veteran members of the group, founded in September 2012 as a drum line, have already outgrown their uniforms. The corps also needs new uniforms for members of the steadily growing horn line, which began practice in September 2013 and is adding new brass players steadily. Membership now totals 12 drums and about 20 horn players.
The Cadets five year plan aims to produce a drum and bugle corps with 100 or members, with an activity schedule including a one-week summer tour of the northeastern United States by the fifth year of activity. The drum line has already entered its first two competitions, taking the Drumline Ontario provincial title in the Independent A Standstill 2 Class category with a score of 80.3, a leap of almost 10 full points over their first-ever competition score of 70.65 a week earlier.
The full Scout House Cadets drum and bugle corps will make its home town parade debut on Canada Day July 1, marching through the Preston neighbourhood downtown business district from the Scout House building that served as the home of Scout House Band across town to Riverside Park, where the first Scout House performance took place in June, 1939.
Scout House Cadets were founded by Scout House Band in the fall of 2012 as one of several projects to help mark the group’s 75th anniversary in 2013. The Cadets have the same name as the original group, which served as a feeder group for Scout House Band in the 1950s and 1960s.
The Cadets practice each Wednesday evening at Scout House building, 1580 Queenston Road in the Preston neighbourhood of Cambridge. New members are welcome. No previous music experience is required.
