2014 Skyliners First Performance A Success
The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps‘ first performance of their 2014 competitive field show on June 14th was a great success. A crowd of more than 200 family, friends, and alumni gathered at Lake Lehman Junior/Senior High School in Dallas, Pennsylvania as the Skyliners unveiled the first public performance of their full competitive field show, “A New Dawn, a New Day.” Congratulations to the members and staff of the 2014 Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps for an outstanding performance!
The day started with a regular corps rehearsal under dark skies; it was cool! Guests, including Skyliner Alumni and members of the Board of Directors of the Skyliners, started arriving around 2:00 P.M. After lunch and break, the Skyliners corps marched to the field in full uniform, lined up on the end zone in two company fronts as in years past. The corps was led by Drum Major Adam Burdett and Assistant Drum Majors Steph Carbonell and Elena Dominick. Four beats on the bass drum, and the drum line played the Skyliners’ traditional street beat as the corps marched towards the center of the field in straight lines, Skyliner “S” flags blowing in the wind!
The Skyliners’ 2014 show entitled, “A New Dawn, a New Day” was entertaining, with much visual and musical appeal. The Skyliners have selected songs that contributed significantly to the history of jazz: “Feeling Good”, “Blue Skies”, “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, “Round Midnight”, and “Caravan”. Their premiere performance of the show did not disappoint our audience, who gave the corps a standing ovation.
The Skyliners thank family, friends, Alumni, Board of Directors, and media who joined them at this important event. Warm thanks must go out to the many parents, families, and Skyliner Alumni who helped all day – from set-up to clean-up; for those who helped with meals for the corps; for those who cooked, or brought baked goods, salads, cold water and drinks, snacks and other supplies; for those who helped with logistics, moving things, and shopping for us; and for the ladies who helped manage our Skyliner Souvenir Table – it was like old times!
Thanks to Becky Walko Burdett, Mrs. Donna Miller, Adam Burdett, and the Superintendant and Board of Directors of Lake Lehman School District for allowing us to use their incredible football field and school grounds. Thanks to the ladies who have been working on repairing and altering uniforms for the corps members for weeks now, and for their work to get the members dressed, fitted and ready for the first performance. Cummerbunds were sewn by Michele Fadden, and Skyliner “S” flags were sewn and donated to the corps by Skyliner Alumna Barbara Rogers. Without all of these people, an organization like the Skyliners could not hold such a successful event. The Skyliners are grateful and appreciate each and every one of you. And they are ready for the 2014 DCA Competitive Season!
If you did not get a chance to see the Skyliners on June 14th, their next performance will be at the Bridgeport, Connecticut DCA show on Saturday, June 28th. The show starts at 7:00 P.M. sharp at 1 Lincoln Blvd.; Bridgeport CT 06604. The Skyliners will also be competing locally at the “Parade of Champions” Competition on Saturday, August 16th in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The show starts promptly at 7:00 P.M. sharp at Scranton HS Stadium; 63 Mike Munchak Drive; Scranton PA 18508.
