As John Hand sits at the edge of his truck tailgate, a familiar smell wafts in the breeze — freshly applied sun screen.

Brass players in the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps have just arrived in the field beside Dutchtown Elementary, prepared to begin their afternoon stretches and exercises.

Hand, too, had just arrived. He made the trip from Coweta County to Henry County just to see the 76-piece wind group rehearse.
