In The News – Local Kids Come Home To Perform High-intensity Drum Corps Shows

For David Johnson, a drum corps practice was energy embodied. Upbeat music boomed in the background as players stretched on the grassy practice field. The air was ripe with spray sunscreen, an effort to fight the sun that was already blazing overhead. He and the other hundred-plus college-aged performers had 12 hours of rehearsal ahead of them, but no one seemed weary. Young, active and a varying number of miles from home, they all had one thing in common: This was where they wanted to be.

Johnson is one of hundreds of performers who dedicate their summer to Drum Corps International, a network of high-intensity, competitive marching bands. Over 20 world-class bands tour the country for months, competing to see whose music, technique and visuals come out on top. The tour will come to D-FW, with a show in Denton on July 20 and one in Dallas on July 24.
