Skyliners Announces 2018 Caption Heads

The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is pleased to announce their 2018 Caption Heads. Jeff Crawford, Visual Caption Head, is returning for his fifth season with the Skyliners. Ian Vanderlinden has been promoted to Percussion Caption Head of The Skyliners in this, his third year with The Skyliners. Shane Startzel is returning for his third season as Brass Caption Head, and Joe Wilt is returning for his third season as Assistant Brass Caption Head. Brenda Peregrim, Color Guard Caption Head, is in her fourth season since The Skyliners’ return to the competition field in 2014.

 

Jeff Crawford, Skyliners Visual Caption Head, is the third of four generations of his family involved in drum corps. His marching experience includes the Southern Tier Grenadiers Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps from Tioga county New York; Empire State Express from Elmira Height, New York; the Watkins Glen Squires, and 27th Lancers from Revere, Massachusetts.

Jeff has been the Assistant Band Director and Visual Designer since 2009 for the Wyoming Valley West Marching Band. He also is the Visual Program Designer for The Greater Nanticoke Area Marching Band. He has been on the Skyliner visual staff since 2014, and was named Caption Head in 2016.

Ian Vanderlinden, Skyliners Percussion Caption Head, was Snare Technician for the last two years. His marching experience includes 2005, 2010, 2013 Empire Statesmen; 2006-2009 Rochester Crusaders; and the 2010 Onondaga Community College Indoor Drum line. Teaching since 2009, his experience includes 2009-2010 Webster Marching Band; 2016 Victor Marching Blue Devils; 2011, 2015-2017 Victor Indoor Percussion Ensemble; 2013-2015 Greece Marching Blue Knights; and 2016 Skyliners Drum and Bugle Corps. During his time with VIPE they were crowned the New York State Percussion Circuit Champions in 2015, 2016, and 2017, along with earning a third place finish in 2017 at the WGI World Championships. Ian earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Nazareth College, and holds certification to teach Social Studies.

Shane Startzel, Brass Caption Head, also started teaching at Shikellamy High School. He was 2001 Brass and Visual Tech, and Brass and Visual Caption Head from 2002-2003. Shane has worked with the Victor High School Indoor Percussion Program (VIPE) from 2007 to 2011, was Visual Teach in 2007, and has been The Victor Marching Blue Devils’ Brass Music Instructor from 2008 to present. Shane has been Brass Caption head since the 2016 season.

Shane’s marching experience includes being a member of the Shikellamy High School Marching band from 1988 – 1992; The Blue Coats (DCI) from 1991 – 1992, and the Empire Statesman (DCA) from 2003 – 2007.

Joe Wilt will be returning to The Skyliners in 2018 for his third year as Assistant Brass Caption Head. He is the second generation of a drum corps family, and began his drum corps career at age 6. Since 2010 he has been Brass Coordinator for the Webster High School Marching Band (NY), and currently plays professionally with Prime Time Brass. Joe’s previous DCA experience includes various performing, instructional, and leadership roles in the Empire Statesmen from 2009-2013, and the San Francisco Renegades from 1997-2008. He was also Founder and Co-Director of the Renegades Minicorps, winning the 2001 and 2003 DCA Championships.

Brenda Peregrim, Color Guard Caption Head, returned to the Skyliners’ Color Guard Staff in 2015 as Designer for Flag and Rifle work, and Instructor. She became Caption Head for the 2016 season. Brenda also has worked with the New York Skyliners Alumni Corps Color Guard over the last few years. She marched guard in the Speigleaires from Troy, New York from 1971 to 1975, and Avant Garde from Saratoga Springs, New York from 1975 to 1981. After aging out, Brenda taught Avant Garde from 1982 to 1983. Brenda is a Skyliner alumna who marched with the Skyliners from 1985 through 1996, and Winter Sky from 1992 to 1996.

In addition to teaching Avant Garde, some of the groups that Brenda taught include the Mohonasen Field Band (1997 to 2007), Mohonasen Winter Guard (1997 to 2007), the 1996 Duanesburg Winter Guard, the 1995 Cherry Valley High School Winter Guard and Band, and the Volunteers Drum & Bugle Corps of Troy, New York.
