Special Events in Madison, August 9th
During this year’s 34th Annual Drum Corps International Championships, two special events are scheduled that will benefit the Madison Drum & Bugle Corps Association, Inc., including a golf outing at Hawk’s Landing Golf Club and an exhibition with four corps including the Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion Corps. Both will take place on Wednesday, August 9.
The golf outing still has spots for golfers who like to mix a little recreation with their drum corps. It will be held beginning at 11:30 AM at the west side course. You can sign up as an individual or as a foursome. The cost is $150.00 and includes a golf cart, a light lunch, a steak dinner at the conclusion of the afternoon and a chance to win $1,000,000 in a hold-in-one contest and $25,000 in a longest-putt competition.
Because the final number of golfers must be confirmed with the course director by Monday, August 7, it is important that you call this week to reserve a spot in the line-up. The day will be run as a shotgun event and is a great chance to spend the afternoon with your drum corps friends and to also meet some new ones before the division I quarterfinals begin the next day.
The best way to sign up now is to call the Madison Scouts’ office at 608-837-0707 and leave a message with your name, a phone number where you can be reached and the best time to return the call.
Then in the evening on August 9, you can see a special exhibition that includes a performance by the Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion Corps, a 250-member drum and bugle corps assembled specifically for the 2006 season. The group will also perform at the DCI Championships on Friday evening, August 11, at the conclusion of the semifinals competition. The Wednesday evening show is an added appearance that is a benefit for the Madison Drum & Bugle Corps Association, Inc.
The event will be held at Mansfield Stadium, located on the campus of Memorial High School in Madison, WI, at the intersection of Gammon Road and Mineral Point Road on the far west side of town. The venue seats 5,000 people and four groups will be featured, including Madison’s division III representative, Capital Sound; the visiting European corps, Jubal from Dordrecht, The Netherlands; the Madison Scouts; and, of course, the Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion Corps.
Food will be available beginning at 5:00 PM and will include Italian beef and grilled chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and brats. The gates will open at 7:00 PM. The first corps will step off promptly at 8:00 PM and the show should be concluded by 10:00 PM.
All seating will be general admission and tickets are $10.00 for adults and $20.00 for a family (two adults, up to four children under age 12). Fans should be prepared to pay cash as there will be no printed tickets, no checks accepted and no credit card charges.
“The Voice of DCI,” Brandt Crocker, will be the evening’s announcer.
A special seating area will be set aside on the 50 yard line at the top of the stadium so that members of the alumni corps can watch the Madison Scouts, then the Madison Scouts will occupy the area in order to watch their brothers in the alumni corps perform their field show.
Following the alumni corps performance, the Madison Scouts and the Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion Corps will gather on the track, close to the first row of the stadium — and joined by any alumni in the audience — to sing "You’ll Never Walk Alone," the organization’s theme song en masse. More than 400 voices are expected to participate.
The large honor guard will include an original member of the corps, Richard Goldberg, who celebrated his 80th birthday recently. His son, Robin, who will also be marching in the alumni corps, still lives in Madison. He was a member of the corps from 1973 to 1976.
To conclude the evening, Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion Corps Director Randy Ferrie will present a check representing the profit from the show to Madison Drum & Bugle Corps Association, Inc. Executive Director Sal Salas as a significant “connection” between the men who performed in the corps uniform over nearly seven decades, to the current members of the Madison Scouts who are now carrying on the traditions of the organization.
Nearly every one of the corps’ 68 seasons up to this year are represented in the alumni corps. There are even graduates from as recently as the 2005 season participating.
