Brass at the Beach Moves… to the beach!

Marching Music’s Major League returns to Horry County Tuesday, July 29 in a new location.

The nationwide Drum Corps International Tour will stop at Doug Shaw Stadium at Myrtle Beach High School. “It’s a perfect venue in a great location, just blocks from the beach. We hope corps members and fans will get some time in the surf while they’re here,” says DCI’s Steve Rondinaro, one of the local organizers. Tickets are on sale now.

Six World Class corps from across the country will perform: Carolina Crown from Fort Mill, SC; Crossmen from San Antonio, TX; Spirit of Atlanta from Atlanta, GA; The Academy from Tempe, AZ; Music City from Nashville, TN; and The Cascades from Seattle, WA.

The show is hosted by the Myrtle Beach High School Band. Director Dr. Charles Dumas has helped extensively with logistics: “This is a major undertaking but so worth it for my kids to see the best of the very best in marching music up close. And it has the potential to be a great fundraiser for our music program here in Myrtle Beach.”

The Horry County school system is providing overnight housing and rehearsal facilities for the corps as they come through on tour. Fine Arts Director Scott Scrivner says it’s a win-win: “Our band directors love having these DCI groups at their schools to inspire their own kids. The work ethic and commitment to excellence is impressive to witness.”

Brass at the Beach premiered last summer at Coastal Carolina University. However, with new teal turf going in at Brooks Stadium the show had to find a new home. “We struck gold with the move to Doug Shaw,” says Rondinaro. “The stadium is in great shape with 6,500 ‘concert side’ seats and convenient parking. Jennifer Shaffer and the city staff have been great to work with. With the beach right there, this will be a favorite stop on the DCI Tour.”
