How one song took the 1979 DCI Tour by storm

In late 1978, the film “Children of Sanchez” (starring Anthony Quinn) hit theaters and quickly tanked. But while the movie was a flop, Chuck Mangione’s dark, powerful musical score became an absolute powerhouse, taking home two Grammy Awards.

From its biting brass to its heavy percussion, the theme song didn’t just win over music critics, it completely hijacked the 1979 Drum Corps International season. DCI’s Steve Rondinaro learns more.
