  1. I remember really enjoying Tarheel Sun in the late 90's and early 2000's. I remember they placed last the final 2 years in competition, and was very surprised, as they seemed better in almost every caption than the corps placing in the 3 or 4 slots above them.

At a show this year, I ran into someone who used to work with another corps, and we talked about all the corps in the past that were no longer in existence and of course Tarheel Sun was one of the dozens we discussed. He was telling me a story about their folding that I hadn't heard, and wondered if anyone could elaborate on it.

He was saying part of the problem was Tarheel Sun was going above DCI and scheduling into shows that were already full. So DCI basically ran them out. I'm not sure how a corps could do something like this, and I was just wondering if anyone knew more information about them. I loved this corps alot, and really enjoyed their shows. I know after 9 years, they probably won't ever become active again. If this is true, it is a shame that alot of young members had to suffer the folding of their corps because of someone trying to rearrange their schedule.

Other than the corps director never paying people...and running the corps on bad credit and literally credit cards...he ended up in jail eventually...nothing was wrong....

  2. colt cadets -nice selections , some nice soloists

legend -good drill for small corps

Teal - nice arrangements, started sounding the same after a while. love the intro.

    guard needs to get together

good you lost the guitar. guitar and brass do not go . sorry.

    semis ? with guard help

Spirit - lots of holes ,dirty , some power . needs to be clean

program ok but not very SPIRIT OF ATLANTA like.

Love Emersons piano concerto , needs more.

finals ?? will be very hard .

Crossmen -Much better , perc.and guard very good.

move to much without a pay off. need to clean .

good program , needs some music GE.

    finals ? maybe .

Madison -Much better again , nice brass and guard.

drill very easy bando-ish drill till ending . yes I said it .

But CLEAN and thats the name of the game. perc. hard to notice.

finals ? yes ? should stay in the 11-12 range

Blue Stars -great visual program , music has lots of tension as a houdini show should .

lots of potential , must clean

    maybe 6- 8th ??

Phantom - great brass sound and book. hard drill not as effective as BS.

good perc. program , guard hurts a bit

    fighting for 6th - 8th also

Boston - great opening , some fuzz in brass sound .

cleaner than Blue stars , less demand.

    9th ??

    Bluecoats. all of the above.

great brass, guard , perc, pit , program ,drill

bari solo with electronics sounded like a toy.

    ending needs work

    top 4 ????

You really think thats "THE" ending??

  3. In fact, from Bristol ... GE Visual, Rep and Perf ...

    CCrown ... 8.50 8.50 17.00

    Bluecoats ... 8.60 8.30 16.90

If I'm reading that one judge's opinion from that one night, Bluecoats have room to grow in their show while CCrown doesn't.

Not saying I agree or disagree or if that judge is right or wrong, but the original poster's point that Bluecoats don't have room to grow according to the numbers, well, that seems to be incorrect.

Coats have had swings as big as .9 tenths between what and how in both ensemble vis and ge vis....musicianship and tech do not match up with comp and excellence and rep and performance as much.....

So the growth potential is there...seeing crown...they are far cleaner....at this stage of the game

  4. Judges are seeing the same thing since their top box numbers are relitivly close to the bottom numbers. I also love how you can judge from your computer too. It's my opinion that compared to Crown, phantom and Boston they were the cleanest and hav e less potential to grow in that area.

Hmm really...because I saw Crown, Boston ,Coats and Phantom for the past two weeks...hmmmm oh by the way...the top numbers for coats are not close to their bottam numbers in design captions(ensemble vis...ge visual) at times...so...maybe before you type you should make sure you have your facts straight.

  5. Something borrowed something blue sounds eerily familiar to the Spirit Show title in 2006? hmmmm....

The Vigilantes will hold their next camp February 13 from 9 AM - 6 PM at Krum High School.

The focus of the camp will be on settling the percussion section. At this camp our caption head Paul Rennick will instruct the entire day along with his staff. This is an incredible opportunity to work with an amazing instructor and try out the corps.

Our brass section has been coming along nicely in preparation for the coming season. Our show is entitled "Something Borrowed..Something Blues." We are expecting even more music from our arranger this camp and should really start to get a feel for how our show will cook this summer. It is an exciting repertoire - and if you think toes were tapping last summer...

Color guard will continue to work on basics. It will not be a full crowd as many of our returning members are still performing in winterguards, but staff will work on fundamentals with those that are present.

Camp fee is $50. Bring your own sticks or mouthpiece and a willingness to work. Lunch will be on your own (although with our friendly crew, no one will be allowed to go it alone!).

If you have any questions or want to know more about the corps, visit our website at www.vigilantescorps.org

  6. Of course, now that I say that, I fully support a corps growing deeper roots in a community. The more that a city feels the corps is invested in them, the more the city will invest in the corps.

So why not have a full-time local unit? Just to pick a nearby example to me, what if the Crossmen had, not only their 150 members who travel in the summer, but say a 50-person unit of all San Antonio kids that performed year-round, under the Crossmen name, in the Crossmen uniforms, playing "Crossmen" type music, but may or may not be in the summer corps? Invite 'em to the banquet too, each year - they're Crossmen as well as the summer guys. How would this hurt the brand at all? You would be likely getting kids who aren't WC quality, obviously, but you'd be teaching marching and playing skills to kids without having to foot the cost of a full-fledged touring "B" corps. And one that would be bringing in money and attention to your group on the local level.

    Mike

Wouldint happen.....Tx Band Kids from San Antonio would look at it as being on the B team...the JV...whats in it for them? They can go back to their pretty decent marching band in August after doing something else in the summer. What you have to realize is back in the 70s, 80s and 90s to some extent Drum Corps was their music education. Thats not the case anymore. I wouldlike to see some sort of datat showing how many scv cadets and blue devils b kids actually go on to the A corps? I think you will be surprised. The only reason those groups are still around is because music ed in Cali ispretty bad. yes there are some good marching groups out there BUT nothing like Tx or Indiana.

I have kids here who marched open class for a year and now are making the Blue Knights and other world class groups. When I ask them why they imply their high school marching experience is better than open class and their training is better so why not go world...? I cannot argue with that...but then you have huge swaths of kids that get cut from the top 8 and then dont march anywhere? Why? They would rather go back to a pretty decent high school marching band experience and try again when they are 18-19.

Also you have to realize this about the average age being 19.4...DCI has done this to itself with the RIDICULOUS starting dates of "spring Training". In tx school go to June 4th now....state law....and school starts on Aug 24 or somewhere around there. Alot of groups are doing Move Ins the weekend of May 24?? a week before memroial Day weekend. When I marched in the 1990s move ins was rt after Memroial Day weeekend and then it was two max three weeks and then your gone on tour. I looked at one top 12 corps asking for its drum battery to move in for almost 5 weeks! High Schol admin(which I am about to become) are not letting kids out of going to school at the end at least here in Tx. Its all about money and adm and butts in chairs ot get the money...and when they let drum corps kids out then guess who esle wants out of school early...the sportos...for their summer league vball...baseball...softball teams traveling the country. Honestly some corps are not offereing contracts to kids who still have to be in school until June 4th here...so if someone is complaining about the age and no high school age kids thats a big part of the reason.

  7. I'm not sure if a background check would detect a "no contest" plea. My guess is no. He still has his Florida teaching certificate (according the state website), so the "no contest" plea must have worked for him. I question his judgement. If the charges had been murder, robbing a bank, selling drugs, whatever-I question his judgement. No contest is not the same as not guilty. I'm all about redemption, but he was not interested in being found innocent. It appears he was interested in keeping his certificate. Unfortunately, this leaves doubt about his character. Doubt about his judgement. I understand that people with personal experience with him might find him a completely moral and professional person. But by pleading "no contest" he has left the door open to questions.

I would disagree. Pleading no contest is just that. How do you know he was not interested in being found innocent? Did you speak to him...I thought not.

So once again your jumping to a conclusion.

  8. First of all, why is it not ok to make a judgment call about a situation. Would you let your daughter go walking through a bad part of town at 1am? Now now, don't be so judgmental about low-income areas.

Secondly, if it's all roses and unicorns, then why did he mysteriously leave Spirit after the incident? Because he knew that it would at BEST be a distraction and at WORST a liability. If this had no bearing on him working in this situation, why did he resign his teaching job? I find it difficult to believe that I have to connect the dots here, but I guess so.

And I didn't slander anyone. I was posing a completely hypothetical situation to make a bigger point about accusations if anything WERE to happen.

What does low income areas and my daughter have anything to do with this? Are you really comparing this to a common sense decision? Really??

Its people like you who cause all the rumor mongering in this world. If you have a problem with it dont support the Colts then. But dont come on a public forum and start throwing words like "molestation" around. Its completely irresponsible.

Oh and by the way Mr. know it all he did not leave Spirit. he was working with them this summer. I know because I was there...were you? Oh wait you werent....so your statement is without merit also. He did not just disappear...he was working with them this summer.

You did slander him by bringing up child molestation. you implied there were issues with children which is totally unacceptable by bringing that up.

My point is your are making up hypothetical situations when there is no need to especially in a public forum.

  9. For the record, murderers were also mentioned.

Bringing up child molestation is totally fine or completely uncalled for, depending on the context. The context was hypothetical, and is not defamatory.

Based on what I've been hearing from in this thread, the people that know him have a lot of respect for his character, which is really what is at question here. I believe that is valid.

    Reminds me of this quote-

"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently." -Warren Buffett

It is slanderous...I dont recall molestation ever part of the charge. The context was not hypothetrical...read the comments.

And by the way he did not "leave" Spirit. He was on tour helping them this summer..I know because I was there.

  10. This is ridiculous. I taught Spirit with Randy for 3 years. He NEVER was anything but professional and if anything very smart about how we dealt with kids. He always had the kids best interest and always was extremely professional and worked his tail off when he was on tour.

I have NO reservations about Randy and teaching. No one knows the exact details of the situation and it really has no bearing on the Colts or anything else. I have recommended students from my school to the Colts and I would have no problem sending my own daughter to the Colts with Randy.

Unless you know specifics about anything you need to not pass judgement. People in glass houses should not throw stones. If you think you know about the situation and decide to post things on this forum your very unprofessional and I have no repsect for your opinion.

I would allow Randy to work with my group. Unless you have seen him interact with kids and staff you need to drop this subject and move on.

And bringing up "child molestation" is TOTALLY out of bounds. You just brought up something that NO ONE was accused of to sensationalize this.....the news story is out there and I do not believe it says anything about that....so thanks for slandering.

  11. As a new "board" member I wanted to address some of the negative press that has been in this thread.

First I heard Memphis was looking to move to DFW and thought it was a smart move. DFW is a hotbed of the best bands in Tx....lots of great color guards to recruit from and possibly hooking up with an affiliation with a top notch indy guard much like some of the World class corps do.

Second I wanted to offer my expertise and experience to a group I think has ALOT of potential. This group and the staff have ALOT of potential especially with the ability to recruit out of Tx. If most of the group is from Tx then why not move?

Third I marched in a corps that moved to Tx and was a one hit wonder and that was the Sky Ryders. Within three years of bad management and recruitment and bad show decisions they were gone. The "sky" was the limit with them and it was frittered away. I vowed I would always try to support another corps and saw this as an opportunity for me to help. Leadership through service is what I am looking for.

I am here on the board to offer my help and guidance in admin decisions and also to offer what I would "instructional" guidance for any and all that would want it on staff thru Chris. I am not the MOST experienced person but I have a background coming from education and having been a judge and instructor of another transpanted corps(Spirit) that I think I bring experiences to the table that would be put to good use.

I am here to help and offer whatever I can for the success of this corps in Tx. I invite any Memphis alumni or current members to e-mail me as I would like to meet more of the Memphis family.

I am excited and thrilled that we have another corps in Tx and opportunity for kids in Tx to march in a quality drum corps.
