"but I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft!"
"Then we can dig it."

but I'll tell you now will be a reprise of "Shaft" from 1976.
You see this cat Shaft is a bad mother--
Shut your mouth

Linda,
Did I read somewhere that the guard is now doing something different regarding the jacket issue?
I'm not sure if they changed anything but last night it "seemed" like they had the more muscular guys take off their jackets while all of the focus was on them and then the rest took them off in the transition. Maybe it was just my perspective because I was sitting much closer to the field than the others shows that I have seen live (and the distance on Fan Network).

Just got a text from a relative, no scores but Cadets 1st, Crown 2nd.

Twenty Texan Scouts are performing their hearts out during this Texas swing. Lots of "home" shows for the Scouts!

Spirit’s high percussion scores this year had me thinking last night about how much more independent percussion judges seem IMHO. There are two human tendencies that I seem to see creep into DCI judging; previous reputation (last years guard was good this one must be too) and current overall standing (bringing one weak or strong caption more in line with a corps’ other ordinals). My ranking of the captions from most to least independent would be:
Percussion
Colorguard
Vis. Performance
GE Visual
Visual Ensemble
Music Brass
GE Music
Music Ensemble
I’m not complaining, I’ve seem corps that I like benefit from this and shows that I didn’t like get hurt by this. It’s just an observation on my part. How do you see the captions’ independence?

The Scouts had made a "little side trip" in 88 BUT their score went up over 15 points in their next show.
June 19 Normal IL 66.900
July 9 Wheaton IL 82.200

I feel extra religious saying my two favorites:
Star 91 - Cross to Cross
Madison 99 - Cross to Star

So...I just heard that madison will have a fleur in the closer..."I freaked out at the end because I was sitting there waiting to take a pic of the fleur de li and then it was over. I thought I'd missed it, but derek said they haven't added it yet."...yeah, heck yeah...
I don't want to be the spoiler for the new ending but I also don't want anyone to be disappointed if they don't see a fleur de lis. I was just told there is not a fleur de lis in the new closer. I don't know any more about it. I guess we will all just have be surprised with what is in the closer.
Go Scouts!

The only thing that is different is that the Cavaliers are now second, and the Cadets are third.
Actually there is no difference. Cadets passed Cavies last night with a 84.95. It's a been a few days for Cavies but their last scores was 84.75.

Madison @ Sand Creek HS in Springs
Scouts full run-through tonight is at 9:35 (probably everyone's is about then but I just got a text with that info so I thought I would share).

It is great to see Spirit on the field, no matter what name they go by. I always thought Spirit Of Atlanta sounded better the Spirit of JSU personally. I just hope this doesn't mean anything in terms of financial that could hurt the corps by not being affiliated with JSU? Was there any sort of financial arrangement there?
This is being discussed in two different threads. Here is a post that says a little something about the financials. <LINK>

Newspaper pictures and a blurb from the Brookfield performance on Tuesday.

I vote yes for retro shows but NOT any that have won or "defined" a corps (95 Madison). Spartacus is a perfect example of a beloved show(s) from a corps past with a theme that can be redone without being a rehash. I'm ready to see Miss Saigon, Jesus Christ Superstar and any BD jazz non-winner.

1. People do not "hate" the Cadets and they do not all hate narration. What they dislike is the quality (and some the quantity) of the narration. I don't hate Warren Beatty or Dustin Hoffman - but Ishtar sucked! I'm not saying the Cadets show is a bomb, just making the analogy that you can like a performer but hate a product they perform in.
That is a very good analogy.
George has introduced the 20%-20%-60% formula for narration. My estimate of the audience response at live performances of The Cadets (at Finals the last three years and Madison this year) that I have attended during his experiment with narration and amplified voice:
2005 Cadets had a strong positive reaction of at least 80%; the show worked, you reached maybe the entire unbiased 60%.
2006 Cadets had a positive reaction from about 60%; you swayed more than you lost, some had issues with parts of the show other than amplified voice.
2007 Cadets had a positive reaction from about 70%; your outstanding music and visual won over some who still didn't love the narration.
2008 Cadets had a positive reaction from about 25%; this show is not reaching hardly any of the unbiased 60%.
This show has failed with the 60%, youttube explanations are not going to change that. I also doubt that a show designed around this theme can be changed with any amount of edits and rewrites to please many more of that group. George wants all of the unbiased 60% to love him. He has been given a fair response by the 60% in each of the last three years and I don't think they have suddenly changed their fair-mindedness this year. He needs to find his happiness from the judges who are giving the corps high, fair scores; the audience is not going to change this year with this show.

Hopefully they move back to Attanta then.
There is no reason that they can't be called "of Atlanta" again. There are other corps who have camps in other cities/states. I'd vote for it.

I think Pete Weber's drill is genius, and I like how it is not just a photocopy of his mentor's style (Mike Gaines). It is an unusual and creative style all his own, and I am a big fan of it.
I agree SO much. There seems to be a Gaines fatigue by the fans (probably not deserved and hopefully not by the judges) and Weber seems to bridge that. He takes a Gaines-like drill, puts in some traditional stuff and punches in just the right amount of his own originality. Outstanding. Pete Weber is now my favorite drill writer in DCI.

You need to add zero to the second poll, you can't vote for no in the first without specifying a number in the second.
(BTW, I am not one of the anti-violence people, I just like the show exactly as it is!)

have any idea what school in the Springs?
Sand Creek HS 7/9-13 (13th laundry day)

Anyone heading to Brookfield tonight for the exhibition? I'm hoping the rain will hold off for a few hours.
Have you seen them live this year? If not, give us a review from an initial viewing (after cleaning) standpoint!

This whole topic needs to be revisited on San Antonio night. Most of the corps mentioned are undergoing mid season retuning, watering, changing and I expect some big changes from each of them. Some will be positive changes, some....not so much.
I won't duplicate my post from another thread but I disagree that San Antonio will give us much information in what has been a very tight group in the 10-16 range the last couple of years. The Academy was in a seemingly secure 10th place in San Antonio last year and missed finals by a full point.
-
It will be good to see the corps all in one venue but I don't think San Antonio is going to give us any clearer picture of how everything will shake out. There were only three corps that appeared in San Antonio last year that did not pass (or get passed by) someone from their San Antonio placement (Blue Devils, Mandarins & Pioneer). It looks like that same group (plus PC & maybe BK) in the 10-16 spots and even tenth place did not guarantee a finals spot.
2007 San Antonio placement with final placement in parenthesis:
10 Academy (13)
11 Colts (10)
12 Glassmen (11)
13 Blue Stars (14)
14 Spirit (12)
15 Crossmen (16)
16 Madison (15)
I would venture to say that these corps are even closer this year.
-
I like them all except 2005. My rank (favorite to least) is:
2003
2004
2006
2007 (first half is #1)
2000
2002
2001
2005
This is just based on my enjoyment of the show. I think execution-wise they get better every year.
