Any suggestions for what you think is the prettiest ballad-ish solo ever?
I want to do a poll, but my knowledge of reportoire is still limited, so I'd do only a half-### job and many deserving soloists wouldn't be recognized.
As soon as this thread has panned out, I will put together a poll.
My suggestions are:
1983 Garfield Cadets "Simple Song". That one-armed mellophone player put out one of the greatest ballad solos in drum corps history. My personal favorite.
1989 Blue Devils "If We Were In Love". If it weren't for that fatal blurb, the solo ALONE would have jumped the Devils up a spot.
1990 Dutch Boy "What Kind Of Fool Am I". Ok, biased I am, but this was one of the highlights of the show for me when I marched the "Frank And Sammy" show....
1991 Freelancers "Bells". The first solo I've heard that actually made me misty. It sounded so "lonely". I know that's weird, but oh well.
1985 Madison Scouts " Rhapsody in Blue". Yeah, that dastardly clarinet part would seem impossible to transfer over to a 2-valve G soprano bugle
...but ###### if they didn't pull it off..
2001 Glassmen "Concertina for Oboe..". That cool flugel solo from last year...very nice!
1990 Cadets of Bergen County "Somewhere". I love the end where the guard member put the soloist's shako back on after the conclusion of a wonderful solo.
1990 Cavaliers "All Things Bright And Beautiful" (I think) Great highlight to a powerful show...
That's just a few....
Post away!
