  1. Stanley Knob is really spelled Stanley Knaub (RIP). Stanley taught SCV - both guard and M&M, helped formed WGI. His ex-wife Debbie marched SCV and taught 27th during the winter of 76-77.

Staney also marched with the Kingsmen as a mellophone in (at least) 1970 & 1971. He left Kingsmen and went to SCV in 1972 (opps). He taught the Kingsmen guard at various points. The opening flag/rife OTL file the Kingsmen guard did in 1973, and in 2007 by the Kingsmen Alumni Corps, was designed by Stanley.

He was taken far too soon.

  2. I hope the changes will drive away some of the "legacy fans"

THEY DRIVE ME WACKO always expecting things to be the way they were when THEY marched, and thinking the shows are designed for THEM instead of the marching members

Sooner old timers are gone the better IMO

Sorry to be blunt but that's my few - if DCI doesn't continue to change it will die

I remember people complaining back in the mid-70's when uniform inspections were done away with. Those who march and instruct now should dictate what the style and rules are. It's their activity now and up to them.

And up to us if we want to watch it, or support it.

  3. no....olde phartz are defined one....by age....and two....by attitude.

"You kids get off my lawn."

"Drum corps don't play any recognizable tunes anymore."

"We should bring back the tic system."

    "DCI is destroying drum corps."

How am I doing with the attitude part?

    Pretty accurate in my book.

Your attitude is coming across loud and clear, but probably not the one you intended to convey.

  4. There is a sizeable faction of drum corps fans who believe the director of your son's corps is hell-bent on ruining the activity. As a result, they take it out on his corps from the stands. Sending an e-mail to Mr. Hopkins instead would be the mature thing to do but............well; those people you are describing are not that.

If this is the worst thing that ever "happens" to your son, he's gonna have a pretty good life. He could be in Fallujah where threats to his life are real instead of imaginary.

  5. I’m on the outside and I kind of like it actually. I marched in the Anaheim Kingsmen in their 70’s-glory days and the Kingsmen Alumni Corps last summer at D.C.I. It was a privilege not many get, and to relive my youth and put that uniform on again I’ll be forever grateful.

On the other hand, it was a HELL of a lot of work and I was sore until Christmas. Maybe if I were single I’d drive up and join the Renegades.

  6. I am interested in marching with a Drum Corps next summer (2009) and a lot of the corps I'm considering are some of the lesser known corps, like the Colts or the Blue Stars. I've been a fan of these corps for a long time and actually have a few friends who are on tour with them right now.

I would have no issue marching with these corps despite the fact that they may not be "top 6" (who knows, though... they both are looking good this season), or anything like that. For me, the experience is what matters much more than if you win or not. And also, I know that no matter where I march it is going to be better than anything I had experienced in High School. I would have no problem sticking with either of these corps until my age-out year.

My fear, however, is that while I have the mindset of "experience over placement", a lot of people I may encounter and become great friends with during my first season would be at that corp just to get their foot in the door and would, in the following years, move up to the bigger corps, which may not be that great for me seeing many of the people I marched with moving on while I stay put.

Should this even be a concern for me, or should I just try out this winter where I want to be, and not even worry about anything else?

Ohhhhh, I feel old. Blue Stars "lesser known".....! They almost beat us in finals in 1972.

Anyway, good luck and may you get to march with whomever you choose.

  7. Does it make sense to keep increasing the size limit of corps when the number of corps overall is decreasing, and expect the activity as we know it to remain healthy?

Increasing the size of corps is good if you’re a top-tier corps, but not-so-much for everybody else. The rich get richer and the poor, poorer. Who is going to want to join a local in-state corps if they can join one of the perennial DCI contenders? The local in-state corps are how drum corps began. If you eliminate them by making it attractive to go somewhere else what will we have left?

Soon it won’t make sense to have DCI prelims; go straight to Finals because there will only be seven, or eight, 225 member corps. Then the argument to allow woodwinds in drum corps will grow even stronger because “they” will point to the need for more members to be allowed into the activity.

It is very transparent to me.
