  1. *Ahem* You did. I distinctly remember you saying in a post that it would be stupid to get a violinist for a drum corps and to use a synthesized violin instead.

    Your words, not mine.

That's completely different. You have brass players interested in doing drum corps, you can use that sound to your advantage. String players are too busy auditioning for NEC, they don't have time for drum corps. If a corps COULD get their hands on a string quartet though and mic them, possibly do some Gorecki or Mozart quartets, well then my friend, you've got some good #### on your hands. Or better yet!!!

The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryars. If you're not familiar, go to the link above.

Open mind =/= Liking every new idea. Hate to break it to you.

Yes, but being receptive of such ideas and being willing to give them chances is a part of being open minded. Renouncing something before even hearing it is an example of ignorance. All music is beautiful in its own way, people on this board are too busy worrying about the stuff they DON'T like, why not try to like as much of it as you can.

  2. Your post has problems on so many levels.

    1. What you're really saying is that if we don't agree with you, we're just close-minded.

    2. No one is stopping the corps from doing whatever they want. If you were open-minded ( :) ), you'd see that corps can do as they wish simply by performing somewhere other than the DCI contest field.

    3. For that matter, DCI is free to change as well. And the rest of us are free to point out the pros and cons of proposed changes (like the loss of our support), just in case DCI decides that fan $upport is relevant.

    4. Just because people disagree on precisely where to draw the line, you want there to be no line at all. That tactic is getting old. Is it still soccer if we let everyone use their hands? If we change the round ball to an oblong pigskin? Replace the goals with end zones? Let opposing players tackle each other? At what point amid those changes does European football become American football? And if we can't agree on where to draw that line, should we erase the line and change one to the other? Of course not - but that's what you ask of us when promoting the concept of drum corps becoming marching band.

Drum corps is not a sport

  3. The Wersi Bass Synthesizer is cool.

IMO, the Wersi Bass Synthesizer + drum corps is most definitely not cool. In fact, it could be even worse than narration.

I'm sorry, but I just cannot buy it. At least not right now. Maybe I'm a curmudgeon at 36, but this is not drum corps to me.

    Neither was contemporary ballet vocabulary

    Or Bb horns (apparently)

Or members who knew how to read music

All this at some point was considered "not drum corps" to someone. People also used to think the world was flat. Let's just open our minds a bit and let people (the corps) do what they want.

  4. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHH

    HHHHHHHHHH!

Here is a clip for you:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=aISqoUskxIU&amp...ted&search=

Seriously, I am really having a hard time with how all this is good for drum corps. It's going to make me want to scratch my eyeballs out more than narration.

That's cool, but I'm pretty sure the music I posted is a lot better.

  5. As far as the capabilities of synthesizers, no where did I mention about them replacing acoustic instruments, that's just ignorant. They can obviously coexist, you'll get a unique sonority to happen. More sound is possible.

Take this for example. A simple example, just a little clip from one of The Residents albums, a very good one at that. They're normally pretty good at achieving very unique voices on their synth work.

Here is another clip of The Residents, I think a better example than the first.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=KlhPm9Iyrm0

Of course the ubiquitous mention of Philip Glass

Lastly I'll just post a video of the Wersi Bass Synthesizer, very cool.

  6. thanks for the link, Radiant Voices is amazing, first non-band stuff i've heard from him.

yea for the most part Ticheli is pretty whack. Symphony No. 2 is good though(those French Horn rips + Cadets Mellos sound like a good combo to me), never heard American Elegy.

God I hope they don't play Vesuvius.

American Elegy is actually a good piece, but between that and October, I think every high school band has played it way too many times, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Ticheli is quite skilled, and he has a very unique voice in his writing, but he makes good money off the young ensemble educational music market. I can't say I blame him, I'm sure he enjoys eating.

I hope they don't play Vesuvius either :(

  7. Hey, with no such thing as a fake sound, let's just advance DCI to 2038 and get rid of horns and percussion entirely. Then we'll reproduce all drum corps sounds uber-realistically with electronic keyboards. We'll call it synthetic corps or Synth Corps for short. We'll even have pre-recorded narration that's only a keystroke away. Sign me up.

Like hyperboles much? This post is worse than breaking Godwin's Law. Seriously man, either add something insightful or just don't post.

  8. Point being, if these things HAVE to be added, I'd rather have someone actually playing a fiddle than having a fiddle sound come out of a keyboard. "Real" vs. "Fake"

Who said that that's what the synths would be used for? Hate to break it to you, but I think they can come up with a lot better ideas than your speculations.

Anyway, this horse has been beaten to death on DCP, so I'd rather not get into it. Especially since I'm not exactly well versed in the technology of electronic instruments, not as much as my friend mistoffolies (I feel like an idiot calling him that...), but seriously the whole "Synthesizers are fake sound blahblah" mantra is just an old, ignorant diatribe. Electronic music has evolved a lot, and even still, has never been this oversimplification of "Oh I'm going to just used a fiddle patch instead of a real fiddle cause I have no talent derp derp" since it obviously takes talent to play the things.

Basically what I'm saying is, there's no such thing as fake sound, all sounds are real.

  9. Just to note... I'm kind of surprised that a lot of people are pushing for electronic instruments (read: synthesizers). I mean, if you HAVE to have a string sound, wouldn't you at LEAST like to keep all the sounds "real"? I think the LAST thing in this entire chain should be "false" sounds... IE, synthesization (word?) should be the final step if we have to take this path.

I'd much rather have clarinets and a mic'd fiddler than some kid on a Yamaha keyboard.

You've obviously never played a good synthesizer before. No one's talking about those crummy $99 keyboards you get at Walmart.

  10. In general, I could do without ever hearing another Ticheli piece ever again.

That said, Symphonic Movement has never been a favorite of mine, but I ended up actually liking what the Cadets did with it this year. So...I'm keeping an open mind. :)

But Ticheli is one of the great masters of the 21st century!!!! :P

  11. Derivative, as in appearing to be heavily influenced by some other source. Familiar, without the originality. Is that better?

Thats a first blush opinion so relax yourself. If you disagree, just say so and move along.

    Well....what music isn't?

Don't tell me to relax because you make a critical statement with no substance and I ask you to explain yourself.

  12. Now he's a designer? Who knew.

And just to clarify, I still love the Cadets :)

The person who takes part in building the storyboard for a show's programmatic theme and concept is generally considered one of the designers. Your condescending attitude towards people who are obviously much more talented than thou is pretty cute. What are you doing tonight after 8:30?

  13. I thought it was a perfect way to explain how you let the people with the expertise do what they do without interference. But hey, you can think what you want.

Go have a ball with your narration and other things.

Yes, Mistoffilies is just the hugest supporter of narration you know

  14. What's ridiculous is the idea that unless the work environment is perfect, people would be exiting faster than animals filing off Noah's Ark. Plenty of people hate their bosses. Plenty of people hate the place they work. Yet many people work in environments like that. So, I don't buy your argument.

Are you kidding? If a staff member (or a marching member at that) doesn't like it at a corps, they'll leave just like that.

  15. No youre kidding me right?

How is what I posted derivative in any sense? The 3 pieces I recommended are some of the best things of Ticheli's work that I've heard, and he is a pretty skilled composer otherwise he wouldn't be as successful as he is. Explain yourself.

  16. I am sure if I were running a corps I wouldn't go meddling around in show design. But that's just me...

Corps directors have a say into how the shows are designed, it's like that at pretty much every corps. Infact, some corps the director is the program coordinator.

  17. Haha...if they put American Elegy on the field, can a James Swearingen show be far behind? :P

I know, what the heck is wrong with some people. There is good band music you know, tons of it. It's just not called Vesuvius...

    Don't forget Michael Sweeney too...
