Tell her to ask her caption head at auditions and when she's offered a spot. I think most corps are pretty flexible about moving in half-way through spring training, some even more flexible.
-
For example, if they released some clips of the finals DVD on YouTube or somewhere (say, 90 seconds/2 minutes from each corps' shows) it might attract more customers.
They do this already. Go to the detail page for each corps on dci.org and you'll see a clip. There's actually tons of awesome free content hosted on dci.org and Fan Network. But how many people visit that every day vs. how many people visit YouTube every day?
-
Arguably dci.org/individual drum corps could have a YouTube channel with all their free content, but DCI also wants people to purchase Fan Network and the championship DVD's.

Some teams make their baritones sound like trombones...

No. A 23-year old should not be participating in a youth activity. Enough said. Things happen. If you want to get recognized as an age-out but get hurt in the middle of the season, I don't think many corps would be opposed to letting you stay on the road and put on the uniform for the age-out ceremony and finals block, especially if you've been a good vet for years before.

more anecdotes. I've heard anecdotes before.
How about proof?
Just go to a DCA show and hear for yourself. This hornline I heard was about 30 people but man, it hurt.
-
I know that most people who are active on DCP seem to have the opinion that G bugles were inherently louder than Bb/F instruments, yet I have never seen or heard any proof of this. Is there any proof, besides in anecdotes from extremely biased people? I seriously want to know, because I'm interested in the answer to this question.
I've walked by a small senior corps warm up in the lot for an exhibition in the summer when I marched. It can hurt.
-
I've never had a whole lot of success explaining drum corps past "professional marching band" unless they've heard of it.
-
Well generally I aggree...
unless they start sounding like this (at :20)-
lol
I wish you had not posted that... good god that was foul. Watch that if you said a hornline can't be too loud.
-
I think very very few high school kids (the target for DCI, apparently) stay interested in drum corps in and after college, unless they end up marching corps.
The Finals broadcast used to be the best exposure we got, but if someone were to get interested in going to a show, the season's over. What if you showed last year's Finals on TV in June, along with a preview of the upcoming season and show information? Then someone watching for the first time would actually want to and get to go check it out.

Ask Phantom if they are considering adding a synth for next year after their inability to play ball with the new mafia I mean DCI judging and rules.
Yeah, that synth will really boost visual scores, won't it?

I thought Star won the brass title solo in 93...I didn't think that BD tied them.
I have also heard that there was only one year out of Star's four Jim Otts where they split it.
-
Yeah right. Biebel's Ave Maria in '06 was pretty nasty, wasn't it? And I'm sure Firebird should have been played at mf. This all smacks of jealousy.
5-6 minutes out of 60 minutes of programming... I guess his point had zero merit after all.
-
I can think of some recent corps I've seen live that really really pushed tone quality. No one has won a Jim Ott playing with poor tone quality. It is possible for a hornline to play too loud for themselves.
-
Make sure you can play with your feet.
-
There's no way a chair won't be involved.
-
Pushups are good because you'll probably do a lot of them in rehearsal!
-
They have as much of a chance as The Cadets and Cavaliers. BD truly is the team to beat, and Crown hasn't ever done that yet.

I don't think very many marching members take AOC/ATB/CF/whateveritisthisyear very seriously anymore.
-
Wouldn't that be something!
AAAARRGGHH!
It would be, considering the numbers he gave Crown last season.
-
If you hold your horn up while watching TV between camps w/ ankle weights or shoes around the bell, you'll be fine.
If you're already playing enough, you should also hit the gym. The best marcher in a hornline is never out of shape.

Holy Name Cadets were my corps to beat, and they wowed me with an unbelieveable refresh of West Side Story that didn't feel too tired or retreaded. The musical arranging was by far the best of any corps. Jay Kennedy is a friggin God. Their guard was technically beast-like and dangerous. Their percussion were intense, focused and clean. Visual performance and difficulty hands down the best of the night, and the Cadets gave every other corps a clinic in marching. Should be no lower than 2nd on Saturday.
Wait, not Jay Bocook?

You would be surprised. We still focused a good amount of time on basics where I marched. The routine stayed the same for the most part.
But I have worked with corps who dropped the emphasis on visual basics a great deal once they are half-way into the season. To the point that they would just do away with visual block all together (late season) to have more ensemble time. And these were top 12 corps.
Same with me. Just thought the comment I referenced was funny because we did basics from spring training to finals week last season, and it'd be odd if all of a sudden we'd change what we're doing now that we're in the hunt.

Well, some organizations have very extreme definitions of this, which is why it's important to bring it up now or at your first camp and not in April.
