  1. If individual technique is the problem - and it is costing them a title - then the marching techs need to take action.

Really, maybe they need to go back to individual marching drills, like it was a camp in February and March..... Take each marcher from the brass and percussion section, and march them through various drills. Find the individuals who have the problems, and correct them, one by one.

If this was taught back before the start of tour, then must of what was taught may have been forgotten. If that is the case, then it needs to be re-taught. That may not be part of the plan right now - but clearly the plan has to change, if they want any shot of pulling back into contention for a title.

Honestly, if that is what it is going to take, then that is what they need to do. This may cut into time for sectional or ensemble practice - but if it is the difference between finishing 5th or 1st, then do it.

Think of it this way: when football teams are preparing for the Super Bowl, they still have blocking and tackling drills.

LOL, because obviously you stop doing basics once you get on tour.

  2. Is the difference in teaching philosophy/quality, quality of show, and the operations of the tour worth leaving the friends/family you've made in your years with the other team? I don't mention competition because at almost any level you'll be competing with someone. I suspect that being in first place is slightly overrated in the long run.

  3. -Quitting your current corps mid-season because you heard about an open spot at another corps

I do not think this is allowed after a certain date, unless the corps you originally signed a contract explicitly allows you (i.e. in writing to the corps you want to join). If you flat out quit, good luck with that.

  4. Marchers and staff on tour get sick sometimes. We are afterall talking about a few hundred on tour. However, a World Class Corps going out with 12 holes in July in competition as a result of a virus of some sort and having their scores go up and the spread go up the very next show is an unprecedented occurance in DCI. You can accept that observation, or not. I don't really care one way or the other with you frankly.

How much rehearsal did Crown actually miss? My understanding was they cut rehearsal short on Monday and skipped a show. They've had a large handful of people sick, but everyone else just sat around and didn't get better since their last show on Thursday?

My advice to you is to wait for the judges on this panel to get a second read of Crown against the Cadets. Maybe they'll fix their numbers if they weren't right last night.

  5. The panel was different and was so noted in my remarks above as well.

Both the panel's are trained properly in the fundamentals of GE Visual. I'm very confident of that.

For instance, a Visual Pattern in the show that is not completed is easily recognized by the GE Visual Judge. Carolina Crown is a terrific Corps, but like any Corps with 12 holes it is impossible for them to complete the visual movement as drawn up by the Visual Design staff. The fact that 12 holes in line would provide a better GE Visual score and SPREAD INCREASE over the competing Corps from 5 days earlier when they had those holes filled with performers is certainly perplexing, if not impossible. Any Visual judge at DCI knows what a completed and a non completed visual movement looks like..... and especially, the GE Visual judge.

Again, judges aren't ########. They can figure out what's a hole and what is bad space. Holes in the form do not necessarily make the form unreadable.

  6. if its true that cadets are sick as well, and we already knew about some injuries, its possible theyre both a bit down, so the two things balance each other out.

Can't be true, Carolina Crown is the only drum corps on the road with sick and injured players. In the history of drum corps.

You are all absurd for making a fuss about Crown's holes. Judges aren't ########, they can see what's a hole and what's poor spacing, and I'd like to think an ensemble judge wouldn't spend the entire night staring at a hole rather than evaluating the ensemble that is there.

Maybe DCI should start reporting how many members take the field at each show along with the recap, since it's apparently so relevant to the score.

  7. Amazing or unbelievable? Cadets are within .3 their last show and then boom! Crown gets sick, Cadets rehearse all weekend, Crown misses a show, Crown doesn't march 12 members, and they improve .3 to 1.4! That is surely AMAZING. 2+2=5?

Relax. For six of the eight judges last night, it was their first read of Crown.

  8. I guess I should say that I do not expect PR or any Corps to top "Spartacus". But this year IMO they were obligated to at least present a show that would attempt to excite the kids and the fans. The Red Violin does not excite anyone IMO. As someone said... the show seems "muddy". And being an ex-snare drummer I feel the scores for percussion are lower than they should be.

Except that they just beat the Cadets in drums at their last show.

  9. Interesting to note that the panel was nearly exactly the same as last night, except for GE Music and apparently no brass judge.

    GE Vis - No change

Field Vis - Cadets close gap from 0.6 to 0.4

Ensemble Vis - Cadets overtake Crown!

Guard - Cadets widen gap from 0.1 to 0.3

Ensemble Music - Cadets close gap from 0.5 to 0.2

Percussion - Crown overtakes Cadets! Everyone also got about a 1.0 boost from last night, too.

  10. No.

Corps work hard all season to score as well as possible, and perform well at regionals. The reward for winning regionals is going on last at quarters, and more often than not, the corps that goes on last is the corps that wins the whole shebang. I dont think you can take that away..

Now, that said, I wouldnt mind mixing up the order at other shows. No reason why boston cant go after the cadets, or BD cant go before Crossmen. I wouldnt put the raiders after the cavaliers, just because they would look small by comparison, but they could definitey mix things up to give the lower corps some more practice time during the day

This. Plus there are at least a couple shows on the tour where teams before intermission go on last and the ones always after the intermission go on before. Pretty cool when you get to check out some of the hornlines that have been checking you out.

  11. I absolutely love the little hint of "In.Trance.It" they give us in the last moments of the show! It brings huge goosebumps, or elephant bumps if you will, all over my body hearing that phrase from the '06 show!!!! If/when they make changes to the ending, I hope they keep that part in!!!

I just watched a bootleg from Outube-yay and heard this too! Good find!

  12. I haven't seen it, if anyone can link to an ESPN.com clip or YouTube, that'd be great, since I have no idea when they replay Jim Rome on the West coast.

Has anyone been paralyzed doing drum corps? Not that I know of. Hell, has anyone died doing drum corps? Not that I know of. Have these things happened to football players? YES. Drum corps is painful, sure, but you are very disillusioned if you think they are on the same level.

Jim Rome compared drum corps to cheerleading just to be an ### (but he's not all that off-base if you look at competitive cheerleading), but I'd compare drum corps more with dance or theater than with a sport.

Everyone who's upset by this really needs to take a step back. It's just drum corps!
