  1. Lets pray that day never comes. If so it will lead to the end of the alumni corps as we know them today.

If we don't get some of the younger folks to pick up the mantle, that will happen anyway. Anyone in DCP land who marched at some time in the past and has the itch to get back in line, consider checking out your favorite alumni corps.

  2. We have just learned that, due to no electricity in the Comfort Inn West, we have been moved to the Riverside Radisson. I&E and Mini Corps Friday right there! The bad news is the rooms only have one king size bed and 1 roll out bed, and only for Friday and Saturday, so some creative rooming may happen. On the whole, :worthy:

    Robert

Now I'll know why there are cots set up in the lobby. FWIW, some of us are leaving Sunday so rooms might open up for Sunday night.

  3. SoCal Dream

    Housing:

    Doubletree Rochester, NY

    1111 Jefferson Rd.

    Rochester NY

(with the other West Coast Crews, Renegades, Freelancers, plus MBI, Bridgemen)

    Rehearsal Site:

    Public School 45

    1445 Clifford Ave.

    Rochester NY

Are there any rooms at that Doubletree NOT occupied by corps people? I hope the bar made arrangements for a couple extra deliveries!

  4. you know... and Don will back me up on this... Punta Gorda above Ft. Myers is "little Rochester" and believe me, it's not the slums... it's definitely the high rent district... but that last hurricane there leveled that place.... and our media definitely tempered the reporting - "who wants to hear rich retired people complain" - truth is - losing everything hurts no matter what your bank account is or how much insurance you have...

I have to agree, that was total devestation. Those big-a... overhead highway signs on I-70 were a mass of scrap aluminum on the side of the road. A day or so after the storm came through, we got a call at the office from the airport looking to buy a windcone. When my sales rep asked what happened to the old one the guy on the phone said "Charlie took it." After a few minutes we figured out that is wasn't a person, but a hurricane.

  5. Just another little question...

Do you guys think it would be more beneficial to try out for more than one corps, or just stick to one?

    Thanks again,

A lot depends on your personal finances and the timing of the different corps auditions. If anyone can tell us, do the corps ask if you are auditioning elsewhere?

  6. Heck, some places, like Jamestown, have lightening sirens when there are strikes nearby. One went off during retreat during the Bugler's Holiday competition at the end of July, resulting in the stands clearing (calm and collected, of course) and cancelling the victory concert for Empire Statesmen.

Of course, after the downpour and tornado madness only a couple hours before the show, we were lucky to even HAVE a competition that night!

Where we rehearse, they have a lightning warning system. It has held up rehearsals but the corps has a healthy respect for what lightning can do. Personally, I'm in total agreement. In my profession, I've seen the after effects of lightning strikes enough times to respect it.

  7. "Didn't want to spend that much money to play at a show?????"

Perhaps you should bring to their attention Scout House, Les Diplomates, Park City, and a host of other corps - not to mention the individuals who travel long distances to appear with their corps. One corps, for example, has members from fourteen states and two Canadian provinces who've all made commitments to "be there" - and they will. And among those fourteen states are Texas, Illinois, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio, Florida, Georgia.....

As far as an alumni show is concerned - this is it!! It seems that your members' decisions would be akin to the Patriots not wanting to go to the Superbowl because it's too far. Or the Red Sox not wanting to bother with the World Series because it's too expensive. It just doesn't wash!

Sorry, Andyroo, but your analogies don't work here. Pats and Sox get PAID to go and the team picks up all expenses.

But aside from that I agree with you. Some corps hire a bus or two with members paying to ride the bus. Many drive their own vehicle or car pool so that they have some flexibility in getting around town. They stay 4 to a room (officially), bring their own coolers and some food to keep expenses under control.

  8. Without seeing a recap...it is difficult to believe that every judge was that far off to create a ten point gap from the top corps to Kidsgrove. That just doesnt seem possible, if they were that good.

    Donny

I'm with you, Donny. I was there and watched Kidsgrove from the end zone. Didn't stay to see the other corps. I did see things that can be improved with KS, but want to reserve my detail comments until I can see a recap.

    UPDATE:

I looked at the recap and I agree with it save one exception. Music Effect. I thought they would be higher.

For the most part, the brass was solid. Percussion needs work. I couldn't hear much of the front ensemble, but battery was shaky in spots. In the visual caption, THESE GUYS MOVE! It may be hurting the execution, not just on the feet but in the music as well. Guard seemed to be a bit subdued.

All that being said, this corps is a welcome addition to the end of season festivities. They "get" the DCA performance model - entertain. I'm glad they're here and expect them to make waves in Rochester.

  9. KEVIN'S STILL EXISTS!

There was a major problem with the date that was not known by the corps director when he accepted the invite.

Kevin's attempted to work around it but the numbers just were not there.

Rather than put a poor product on the field the board of directors regretably had to cancel.

Kevin's WILL be in Plymouth.

    See you there!

Phew! I know some folks in SKEK. Good to see it was just a date conflict.
