  1. I've been taking time to go through all the pages of this thread, (maybe half way through so far) it's amazing and as someone mentioned this IS the history of drum corp., right here. Excellent pictures and comments, thank you everyone. :worthy:

I have a couple more from my days with AAG, this one is from a standstill show at Fairmont Hot Springs in British Columbia Canada - 1976

(again, my apologies for the quality.)

I played around with the color on this one and reduced the yellow:

  2. Colour guard at the Eiffel Tower show in Paris (again my apologies for the color quality, it's from the negative.) I loved it when they wore the orange uniforms in contrast to our whites, and I loved our color guard. I had this pic blown up poster sized, framed and hung on the wall as well.

Since you mentioned color in both of these photos (and also noted that the second photo was flipped), I took the liberty of playing around with the color a bit; the yellows are diminished a bit, the reds heightened. You can decide for yourself if these are "improved" or not. They're both great photos, no matter what . . . as is that spectacular overhead shot from the Eiffel Tower. That one needs no improvement, IMO; it's perfect as is!

  3. Those of us in Canada have to cross our fingers when DVDs are shipped here.

Tracking stops at the Canadian border. At that point, we have to pray that the postal service has sufficiently fed the sled dogs they use to transport the DVDs - nothing is worse than under-fed sled dogs shredding the DVD packages looking for a decent meal.

LOL, ain't that the truth?

  4. Blue Stars were the first corps to use umbrellas on the field, and you're right, Linda, it was 1977. Santa Clara's guard used parasols in '83 and '84, and also used big red umbrellas in the opener to their "Miss Saigon" show in 1991.

  5. Are you sure this was the St Louis Armory? Looks a lot like the St Claire County courthouse in the center of Belleville near the fountain where West Main St becomes East Main Street(or vice versa). But it has been many years since I was stationed at Scott AFB...

No, I'm not sure. These photos were posted on Facebook (in the "Facebook Drum and Bugle Corps" group), and I included the captions that the poster, Dave Scott, included with each photo.

Still the most bad-a** uniform ever.

    Amen! :worthy:

  6. Saw these photos posted on Facebook, courtesy of Dave Scott, of one of my favorite corps uniforms, Belleville Black Knights:

That last one is a photo I remember seeing many years ago, back when I was marching with Oakland Crusaders. I thought it was of the corps assembled around a courtyard, but I could be confusing that with a photo of De La Salle. Wish it were higher resolution, as it's an awesome photo!

  7. I miss out on so much current event/cultural humor because we don't have dish or cable and watch very little of anything at all, even on netflix/hulu. Now I'm forced to go to that video website not to be named!

I hear ya. We have basic cable, but only watch a few shows regularly, and then hubby has his brain pudding that he channel-surfs through. So I find I'm getting fewer and fewer of the current cultural references. I feel so old!

  8. newsflash: go on facebook you can get the full audio show for free. thanks madison.

    Where? I'm not finding it.

I would say that the people with the right to say yes or no were financially compensated appropriately by an entity who could pay for the rights as opposed to a non-profit hoping to get a break.

Well, we could debate whether it was "appropriate" or greed, but yeah, I have a feeling that money talks once again. Again, it would be interesting to know if all but one granted permission, or it was more than one who said no.

  9. Securing ALL required rights was not a problem for any 2011 DCI corps except for Scouts. It wasn't too impractical for every other corps in DCI to program shows that cleared all required rights and permissions.

And the reason could very well be because, for all the other selections chosen by every other corps, there was not the long laundry list of copyright holders to go through that exists for "Empire State of Mind." And, again, all it takes is one holdout to nullify all those who did grant permission. Just because it didn't happen to other corps this season doesn't mean no other corps was ever going to run into this at some point.

  10. Why would any corps go into the season without having been granted the permissions needed for their entire show?

This seems like an affront by the music company, but the onus is on the corps admin to play by copyright rules.

Well, if you advocate that a corps start securing rights to next season's program a year before the current season is over, then that's the only way I can see doing this. But I think that's a pretty impractical solution. My understanding is that Madison's staff began going through the complex process of securing all copyright permissions well in advance, and that most (but not quite all) granted them synch rights permission. All it takes is one holdout to negate all the other permissions. There is a long list of artists/publishing corporations tied to this particular song, and I have written to them all (though four of the five publishing entities are tied to EMI, so they're effectively going to the same place). At this point, sadly I don't think it will do any good, as I've read here on DCP that the final answer was no.

So, how would you explain to the youth that this great institution called the Madison Scouts, one with a proud tradition of honor, is choosing instead to purposely break the law; and thus placing the corps into financial ruin by the huge fines which would ensue if you continued on that path? Would in not be far better to inform the youth that the Madison Scouts organization has been, and always will be, and honorable institution; and while unfortunate, to keep that honor the current youth are going to have to step up and learn a new portion of the show?

Except that at no time did Madison ever do this. The Scouts secured full rights to arrange and perform this song. The only permissions that didn't come through fully were the synch rights, which involve synching audio with visual in a video clip, such as on the "Fan Network" or on DVD. Where have they done this? DCI and the corps will not allow that to happen, since that specific permission did not come through. That's why we're not hearing the sound on the "Fan Network" clips. No laws were violated, and no financial ruin will ensue.
