  1. What time do they start, for us people in the Great White North in Kitchener, Ontario ??:unsure:

Finals start with the first corps stepping off at 10:30 am PST. For you folks east of Indiana that will be 1:30pm EST.

Not sure who is on when, as DCI hasn't posted it yet. I'm curious because what they do with Yokohama will determine whether or not Fever gets to go on with the rest of the top 6 or if they'll have to go on BEFORE intermission. Not liking the possibilities there ,because despite what folks believe , time lapsed between groups DOES make a difference in Div II/III .

  2. I think they should be included in the divisions...DCI is Drum corps INTERNATIONAL...why make a seperated div called international?

there IS an International division It was developed so corps such as Yokohama and Jubal etc.could use the rules of their home circuits and compete . My understanding is (at I could be incorrect) that they have members who don't fit the age requirements DCI has in place at this time. But you're right in sugesting that perhaps we should all play by the same set of rules and compete.

  3. Ryan...you were wrong about Madison. It was a very good show as well.

Also...this is a dead horse. As it was in Madison and for several years before that.

If you want to perform to an empty stadium on Finals week...join II/III should be the motto.

Thanks for the enthusiasm and the attempt to get the word out.

I'm done championing II/III. They have done NOTHING to elevate their standing in this activity. They do not promote themselves well and they do not connect with the core (corps) drum corps fan. Those are just the facts.

Sorry I'm being a little rain cloud today...but II/III needs to wake up and decide what they are to become. It's most likely too late. Expect announcements from Jersey and possibly Spartans about a move up next year. Where does that leave Div. II?

It's time for a more radical approach...it has nothing to do with the on the field products which are generally better than they have ever been.

It's not about the members...that's been too much the focus for too many years. It shouldn't be about the members and their development. It should be about finding and drawing an audience. And what's apparent is that audience IS NOT Div. I fans. They don't make the effort and will not make the effort. I'm sure the beaches were packed yesterday with fans going Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. How many fans were in attendance at Pasadena Community College? And to think...someone actually posted their worries that the stadium would be too small.

So, thanks for your efforts on behalf of DCIs dying circuit. It's on life support now and hospice has been called. I am already looking for a cemetary plot.

WELL THANK YOU FOR YOUR LESS THAN INTELLIGENT REVIEW OF THE DIVII/III COMMUITY. I'M SURE THE 27 + CORPS THAT ARE DIVII/III ARE VERY HAPPY WITH YOUR ASSESMENT. I ,FOR ONE KNOW #### WELL THAT OUR CONTEST A WEEK AGO WAS PROMETED BY THREE NEWSPAPER ARTICLES OVER THE SUMMER AND A HALF HOUR RADIO SHOW THE WEEK BEFORE AND YOU KNOW WHAT ? IT DIDN'T WORK ! KNOW WHY OH I DON'T KNOW HOW ABOUT TWO DIV I SHOWS WITHIN AN HOUR AND A HALF OF OURS WITHIN TWO DAYS OF OURS. ADD TO THAT A DIV II/III SHOW ADDED AN HOUR AND A HALF AWAY WITHIN A DAY AND BAKERSFIELD (neither of thelast two were on the table when we agreed to have ours). and you know what? IT IS ABOUT THE MEMBERS IT MUST ALWAYS BE ABOUT THE MEMBERS THEY , ARE WHO WE WORK FOR! THEY ARE WHO WE EXIST FOR.

SO GO WATCH YOUR THREE DIV I SHOWS A YEAR AND LIVE IT UP .BUT REMEMBER NEARLY 20% OF THE DIV I MEMBERS COME FROM DIV II/III . ALREADY WELL TRAINED AND CAPABLE where will these people come from WITHOUT DIV II/III ? NOT YOUR HOUSE I'M GUESSIN'

  4. Congrats! Hope they can hang on to it over the next few days. According to the APD's, Spartans sounded pretty "rough around the edges" so they might sneak past the Surf if they clean/perform better.

I would like to add congratulations to ALL the DIV II/III Corps who made the trek ! I know that in these divisions finding the means to "get it done" is often more of a challenge than putting a presentable/ competitive program on the field!

Congratulations to ALL the finalists who ,by all accounts can look at this acheivement as a true HIGH point worthy of remembering.

In particular all those corps who had to come all the way from the East coast. (now you know what the west goes through every year.)

Especially CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE Div III corps who have given notice to Div. II on the field. DIV III is smaller BUT are very competitive. Div II/III YOU ARE WHAT DRUM CORPS WAS.. IS .. AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE. Fun, Exciting, Competitive, and educational. Thank you for NOT becoming something else.

  5. I dare not get into arguments about the "what and what if's" about Division II/III and the apparent "lack of support". But let me make sure people understand something, as I was there, announcing and helping to run the show.

First--DCI committed a LOT of resources to making the show site work. There were a TON of volunteers there helping out. So if there's that commitment, it seems to me that DCI wants it to succeed. And prelims WAS successful. It was ON TIME with NO PROBLEMS.

Second--to the person above who said you're missing out if you follow just the Top 6. 10000000000% correct. I'll be honest. I went to Division II/III last year in Madison and I don't know what my issue was--old, grumpy, whatever--but I was bored silly, except for Academy. This year...HOLY COW!!! Yes--most of the corps are smaller (but so is Mandarins)--but there are GIGANTIC GOBS OF ENERGY flying off that field. There were yesterday that's for sure. And if you need your face peeled off, you'll get that too! Can anyone say...TEAL SOUND--THE ENDING?!?!?! Can anyone say...SPOKANE THUNDER--THE FIRST IMPACT?!?!? Can anyone say...JERSEY SURF!?!?!?! Can you say...MEMPHIS SOUND--THE LAST 30 SECONDS?!?!?! I mean...to coin an old drum corps phrase...YOWZA!!!! ($1 to BD).

I'm not just saying this to fill up the stands. I personally could care less how many people show up. I have no vested interest. BUT--it would be nice for THE KIDS to see more people there. I'm being very honest--we had a GREAT time yesterday with the 200-300 people that did show, and the corps were PERFORMING THEIR ##### OFF. I can only imagine the hearts that are going to be left out there on the field on Friday as these groups duke it out for Grand Finals. The bloodbath ain't just up in Division I...

So--if you have an extra 10 bucks laying around, get your rears down to PCC on Friday and see what you're missing. And here's an idea--this just hit me--

IF YOU WERE THERE YESTERDAY, TELL EVERYONE...EVERY SINGLE FRIEND OF YOURS...TO COME DOWN. SUPPORT THESE CORPS!!! AND TELL THEM THIS DIVISION II/III AIN'T NOTHING TO SNEEZE AT!!!!

THANK YOU RYAN !!!!!!!! I'VE FELT FOR SOME TIME NOW THAT THE HEART OF DCI IS IN DIV II/III . By that I mean THIS IS WHERE THE ACTIVITY IS FROM , WHERE IT SHOULD BE. Take a bunch of kids largely local (to your corps home area) AND MAKE SOMETHING OF THEM. That's what Drum Corps once was BEFORE the age of the THREE AUDITION SITES in THREE different Parts of the country AND TAKING ONLY THE BEST 135 PEOPLE YOU CAN FIND ON AN" INTERNATIONAL JOB FAIRE TYPE RECRUITMENT DRIVE"

I have a hard time believing that Div I does more to EDUCATE the young people involved than DIV II/III . I KNOW for a fact ,that if you're looking for DRIVE, COMMITMENT, AND RAW ENERGY DIV II/III is where you need to spend your time.

Sadly though , WE are the ( N.I.Ts) to DIV. I (NCAA) . OR the AFL to Div I NFL .Sure alot of corps are having trouble in our division WHY WOULDN'T WE BE ? The drum corps community has become jaded into believing that DIV I is all there is . I Have no gripe specifically with the individual Div I corps or for that matter with DCI .They marketed what they feel is the most marketable.

NOT ONE OF THE TOP 4 OR 5 DIV II/III corps would have much trouble being presentable in competition in Div I. I'm NOT delusional ,I know they 'd place somewhere between 16th - 27th , the point is ,they could be there and ,be as entertaining .

People have forgotten that ,in alot of ways the only reason a corps is in Div II or maybe Div III is because they 're S-M-A-L-L-E-R NOT LESS OF A CORPS .

FOR MY MONEY DIV II/III IS WHERE DCI MEETS THE ROAD. It's Drum Corps for the masses , It's enjoyable, It's often ,High energy

AND SO DARNED UNPREDICTABLE ,THAT IT'S ALMOST LIKE COLLEGE BASKETBALL." ANY CORPS ,ON ANY GIVEN DAY" (to some degree)

Again DIV II/III IS WHERE MY HEART IS AND I KNOW IF MORE PEOPLE WOULD TAKE INTEREST ,MORE PEOPLE WOULD BE EXCITED.

  6. Please fill in the blanks. Fans want to know...where are you being housed for DCI/Pasadena this year?

FEVER, Thanks to the friendly folks of the L.A. Basin, is staying in the Super 8 motel on w katella in Anaheim. Sorry DCI , I really thought ,as I'm sure we ALL thought ,that California would treat DCI better .Sadly it is SOOO Letigeous here that housing was really hard to get . Oh well see you again in 35 years.

  7. O.K Here's what I don't get BESIDES the webcast.

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TRY AT WEBCASTS FOR THE YEAR !

Why is it that these problems occurred no where else? OR.. did they ?

DCI site still won't let me order I can't get past the "coming soon"

  8. I can't even get IN !!! It won't let me past the " order webcast"

it just says coming soon, I'm sittin here with credit card in hand help !!

and why aren't the scores updating on the dci site I can't even tell what happened let alone what's happening

  9. Based purely upon the scores this year, it seems like some of the really strong DIII corps could easily have competed in DII. My question is, were these corps (e.g. Memphis and Fever) forced to go DIII because of the membership requirements, or were they in that range where they could have moved up if they wanted to? I’ve been wondering about this for a while…does anyone know?

In the case of FEVER ,when it came time to declare division for the summer ,membership count was 3 or 4 more than they currently field. I think 62 is the number. Those 3 or 4 all departed for various reasons . Long story short they were division III last year and the numbers never came over the winter.

Based on previous years experience ,having fielded 90-100 members as a DivII corps the staff felt it would be foolish to try to compete 62 members against the other Div II corps of roughly 100 members . NORMALLY they would have been safe in so thinking. In DivII/III land the impact available to a corps with 26 horns is usually considerably less than that of a 40-50 man horn line,So too with 15 guard versus 24-30. The staff really felt the corps could be competitive (and probably hoped but didn't know just how competitive they could become) They are really having an excellent year and I hope that things will continue to go well. Anyway ,that's what happened, and I'll bet if anyone from Memphis answers ,their story could very well be similar.

  10. Not sure if this qualifies as a bona fide review, but here's a small sampling of comments I got from one of my DCI first-timers friends we brought to the show...sometimes it's certainly intresting to hear from someone without bias or preconceptions! Please be advised that the following opinons are her own, not mine, and take them with a grain of salt, (especially guard members,) her brain's a little fried these days from med school. ;) Just thought I'd share, we love you Carole!

    ON PARK & BLOW ROCKOUTS...

"I hate it when they wiggle! It looks stupid! If they're supposed to be rocking out, they need to MOVE!"

    ON COLORGUARDS...

"I think a lot of them were distracting. They can add a lot sometimes, but some of the corps would've looked great without them."

    ON PACIFIC CREST'S GUARD UNIFORMS...

"Nice pants, I want a pair!"

    ON CROSSMEN'S CAPED ENTRANCE...

    "HARRY POTTER!!!"

ON THE GLASSMEN AS THEY ENTERED...

    "Are they pirates or gypsies?"

    ON THE BLUE KNIGHTS...

"Dark? But the flags were so bright and pretty!"

ON CAROLINA CROWN'S GUARD UNIFORMS FROM THE TOP OF THE STADIUM...

"They look like pieces of Bacon!"

    ON THE BLUECOATS...

"Where the fudge did all those briefcases come from?! How did they DO that???"

"It feels like I'm watching a magic show! I have no idea what's going on..."

ON THE CADETS ENTERING THE FIELD...

"I love how they enter (in a block, straight down the 50,) they look like an army!"

    ON THE CADET'S NARRATION...

"Couldn't understand what they were saying half the time."

GREAT COMMENTS !!! I THINK IT'S INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO LISTEN TO THE NEWBIE/UNINFORMED/UNBIASED.

Are these not the people Drum Corps is TRYING to woo. That's generally the rationale for changes like, narration(personally I was always told "if you have to explain it ,you did it wrong"), singing, and amps and synths, and sax's right?

DRUM CORPS FANS AND EX-PERFORMERS should always make note of the comments of the NEW audience, and pass them on to DCI. IF THEY (DCI)TRUELY LISTENED ,they'd discover that IT AIN'T BROKE ,QUIT TRYING TO BREAK IT,UH I mean FIX it.

  11. Yeah...ridiculous, huh? NW shows have always been overpriced! The show in Seattle tomorrow is only $12 though...$15 at the gate. Best priced show in years! :)

Modesto Ca August 3rd Spartans, Surf,Vanguard Cadets,Yokohama Scouts, Fever, Oregon Cru, Gold,Citations,Impulse,Thunder, and S.F.Renegades,

$10.00 a seat AMAZING CORPS ,AMAZING PERFORMANCES, GREAT PRICE

BE THERE ,ENOUGH ROOM FOR OVER 3,000.00 IN A REALLY NICE STADIUM

  12. I know tons, my dear friend. If you would wake up and smell the coffee, you might learn a thing or two :lookaround:

I'm guessing guardian was speaking of MORE than just the N.W. corps. I know many ,and they ARE there for the kids , I'm sorry there is an issue in the NW . It doesn't follow true with ALL the other corps competing at these shows.

  13. Really? I'm pretty sure that it's happened at least ONCE this summer...in at least ONE caption...

O.K We've beat this issue and Revo to death on this. It's been three shows since their "time off" and the scores are consistant with the rest of div III . I think our little mystery is solved. They're a great corps with a great show ,right in the mix with the other 3 of the top 4 corps in the division and I FOR ONE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE ALL THE SHOWS AND SEE HOW THIS ALL SHAKES OUT! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ! BRING IT TO PASADENA AND ALL ANSWERS WILL BE MADE CLEAR.

  14. When it comes down to it, revo left tour afer a div2/3 show in which they jumped 16 pionts in 4 days. Then they came back to a div 1 show (I highly doubt they were on a div 1 sheet) where div2/3 corps score lower anyways. I think they are about where they should be, very respectable and very much still in the hunt.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING JUDGED ON DIV I SHEETS AND DIV II/III SHEETS IS EASY TOO QUANTIFY

LOOK AT MAGIC DIV II SCORE THE YEAR 2002 ON DIVII/III SHEETS THEY WERE A 99.05 .LATER THAT WEEK IN DIV I FINALS THEY SCORED AN 84.85. YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE IS A LITTLE OVER 14PTS.

NO OFFENSE TO REVO 'CAUSE I'M SURE THEY'RE HOT BUT ..... YOU TELLING ME THEY'RE A POINT ,POINT AND A HALF BETTER THAN SPARTANS? IF THEY ARE THEN THEY'RE COMPETING IN THE WRONG DIVISION AND SHOULD BE VERY EMBARASSED.

THAT SAID I'M NOT BUYIN' IT 'CAUSE I KNOW THEM AND THEY ALL HAVE TOO MUCH INTEGRITY AND CLASS TO DO SOMETHIN' LIKE THAT.

  15. I never realized how wide the gap is between the ‘traditionalists’ and the ‘current generation’. Being a member of the latter, I love drum corps for what it is now (I guess you could even say, I believe in now…), and certainly not for what it was back in the 70s and 80s (no offense).

I wonder how well the current fan base would receive a junior corps that marched symmetrical drill, played a show that appeared to be a random assortment of songs, played 3 of those songs EVERY year and cranked with abysmal tone quality. Personally, I would not be entertained in the least. I like shows performed at close to perfection with a high level design (e.g. Cadets 05, BD 04, Phantom 06 to name a few).

Even a lot (but certainly not all) of the shows in the 90s don’t compare favorably to modern shows in my opinion. The quality of playing, writing/design, marching, demand and performance has only escalated. What’s wrong with that? If drum corps hadn’t evolved to what it is today, I (and I imagine others) would have no interest in it whatsoever. Just offering a different point of view.

Tell me something and try this at home, If you couldn't HEAR the music ,could you tell what was happening musically by watching the guard or movement of the corps? Watch a video of a corps you wouldn't ordinarily watch, a corps ,whose show you don't already know(whoever that may be) tell me BY VIRTUE OF THE VISUAL ASPECT OF THE SHOW ONLY

where are the loud parts?Where are the soft parts? where are the fast percussive parts? where are the longer toned more melodic parts? In other words If you were DEAF could you enjoy, and get THE GIST of that show? NOW "with new ears" watch and listen to some corps ya' love ? TELL ME why is it that no matter whats going on with the music the drill is what it is(much of the time) almost at a disregard for the subtlety and expressiveness of the musical program.

IN SHORT ,WHY BLOCK FORMS WHEN THEY MAKE NO SENSE? WHY RUNNING AND ROTATING FILES IN A BALLAD? Just a question from a guy who has NOT liked SOME of the "INNOVATION" in the visual books of the last 20yrs.We (often) have "drill" for the sake of the drill as long as the "counts" are equal to the music phrase ,we don't even pay that much attention? Why is that?

  16. I think you make some very good and valid points.

Some members of Pioneer are no bones about it...they are using Pioneer as a way to march a Div. I tour but ultimately they want to go on to another corps higher up the ladder. Hey, that's life...good luck...thanks for the times we had together. I guess you can't stop people from trying to reach their ultimate goals in life.

These same Pioneer members may have tried out for Regiment, Madison, Cavies, etc. They may have been told at those auditions that they didn't quite have the experience to march with any of these corps this year. Pioneer offers an opportunity to perform a Div. I schedule..to stand next to and to watch the corps I mentioned plus others and yet....it's about learning. It really is about learning...and getting better everyday. Do some Pioneer members move on to other corps...no doubt.

You mentioned a low number of age outs, losing talent and experience every year...and you are correct. That's the downside.

Someone mentioned somewhere about the fact they are still on G horns. Playing a G horn is no more difficult than playing a Bb horn. They sound different as the Gs are pitched lower and maybe offer slightly less resistence, but it's miniscule. You play the horn you are given...it's drum corps.

People have mentioned that the drumline smokes this year. That's great. And someone mentioned they think the guard has improved this year over year's past...great again.

They may be perenially a young, first up, 22nd place corps. I guess if they still get members and can do a Div. I tour successfully and they remain financially solvent...more power to them. Some years I like their show...some years I see it once and then it doesn't strike me as a good show. Hey that's happened with corps up and down the scoresheet.

But there is a big IF here. IF Pioneer could begin to hold onto a nucleus of young and developing musicians and marchers...IF they could mold a staff and could retain some consistency in their ranks...who knows.....IT could happen.

By the way....Milwaukee is a great town...one of the finest in the country...home of Sprecker Beer and Kopps Frozen Custard.

    I love Milwaukee.

be patient some here may not remember but the cadets had some down years in the mid '70's and let's not forget or be ungrateful for Boston ,and Blue Stars hanging in there year after year FOR MANY YEARS until they found their way again. Some times it takes awhile and ,as they say as long as your breathin' you can always do better I have a feeling Pioneer will do just fine be patient Great things come from places less observed
  17. Pioneer scores sometimes really make me wonder as well. The harsh truth is, it is the format for which a Corps is judged. I could really care less what a Corps scores. My kids and I saw Pioneer in Madison in June. They were my kids favorite Corps, and that was over Madison, Cascades, Blue Stars, and Southwind. I also really enjoyed them.

From a fans prospective, I love Pioneer and really enjoy there show. At the end of the day, isnt that what Drum Corps is all about? The Fans?

Ive always said it would be really interesting to let the fans in the stands vote. The face of Drum Corps would be completely different. You could hand Carolina Crown the gold medal. Theres a Corps that the fans go nuts over, but just dont have the same impression on the judges.

Let the fans vote. Who else thinks this would change things?

It SHOULD be toplease and entertain the fans BUT somehow some have lost their way. It's the guys in the khaki

pants that matter now. OOPS I'M SORRY ,DID I SAY THAT OUT LOUD?

  18. Firstly, it had to have been a gas for you to march '80 Spirit! You guys were fantastic and almost pulled it off! Just .8 from winning it all!

I'm not quite sure at what point and time we lost Drum Corps - but I know what the last nail will be for me. That will be when woodwinds i.e. clarinets, saxes, flutes, and one would assume trombones, are finally allowed. That likelihood increased dramatically when DCI recently either proposed and/or ok'd increasing the membership limit to 150 from 128. I believe they did it to make room for the full compliment of band instruments.

One reason I went to the Atlanta regional was to experience the vestiges of drum corps. I went because I know the tail end to drum corps is near.

The changeover is about money. It's about advertising and sponsor dollars from more, larger, and varied instrument manufacturers. It's about clinic income for the top corps and participant fees. It's about expanding from an umbrella organization over a paltry 50-100 corps of narrow brass instumentation to influencing thousands and thousands of bands and the money decisions they make. Direct influence and control translate into ching. It's no longer about you and what you want as a spectator; DCI won't change for the traditional drum corps fan. In losing those who'll bale at the changeover to full band, they'll pick up tons of BOA spectators once they go head-to-head with BOA - or merge with them altogether. What a coincidence that DCI happened to move to the same city as Bands of America. What are the odds?

Like you, I miss the days when whole crowds would ...

ODDLY ENOUGH while DCI and it's member corps contemplate adding more variety to the instrumentation available, WGI does winter percussion, and colorguard and in '06 had 11,000 performers at their championships in Dayton Ohio. Not a clarinet or saxaphone in the place. YES ,I know they amplify, yes I know they use electronic keyboards and bass guitars HOWEVER for the most part it's good old percussion and the performers attending and competing there outnumber DCI summer contingent 2 to 1 .

  19. That's not innovative, go out to the first day of marching practice for any high school band and you'll see hundreds of kids who can play and march in completely unrelated tempos.

Heck, they can play and march in completely unrelated tempos to one another even!

amen brother ,I've watched with gritted teeth every year for 33 years. It's not innovative any more than Maplethorps art exibition was innovative. Different doesn't always mean better ,or even good for that matter.
