  12. Last night's Minnesota Brass performance was a pleasure to hear and see.

I've never heard a MB horn line sound this mature; not once did I hear a player stick out of the ensemble, nor did I hear any intonation issues. Matt Kettlehut's horn line is powerful and sophisticated and evokes emotion that furthers the show's narrative. For instance, I can't remember the last time I heard a DCA horn line perform crescendos and decrescendos of the extreme and quality I heard last night. They've reached a dark, full sound that is crucial to pull off this mythical, Nordic-warrior book creatively crafted by Program Coordinator/Percussion Arranger Joel Matuzak and Brass Caption Head/Arranger Kettlehut, and Guard Caption Head Gary Swanson. Additionally, I was flabbergasted at some of the mellophone-type runs that the baritone/euphonium line was dishing out! Importantly, one gets the sense that all sections and members are contributing at a high-level - which may be the difference this year come Championship finals night.

A note about marching style; the corps is marching with more of a locked stride that relaxes ever-so-slightly at the end of the step and is best performed on artificial turf or a short, flat grass. This new approach translates into a uniform-stature from the body-of-marchers, and lends itself to the battle-like, ominous theme of their show.

If you get a chance to see the corps this year, take it. It's a scary thought to think how good they're going to be a month from now; it's an exhilarating thought to think that, come finals night, this may be the year that a midwest corps is the last score announced.

  13. I just got back from BOA Grand Nationals and watched all 12 finalist Bands. Now there is a lot of negativity towards "marching bands" and how drum corps should make a distinction from marching band...

But what I saw from the 12 finalist bands at BOA was anything BUT what is stereotypically tossed around about “Marching Band” even here on DCP. These bands WERE Drum Corps quality bands. From programming, to movement, to speed, to drill design and music, to power of sound, to creativity… I had my jaw open during each of the shows wondering how the heck high school students could achieve a level of performance to rival even mid to lower tiered World Class drum corps.

I wonder if people who are against the “BOA, Marching Band” thing have even taken the time to watch some of the best marching band has to offer. Because what I’m telling you that Marching Band is becoming more and more drum corps like and it’s not the other way around.

It’s clear to me that anyone who appreciates drum corps should also appreciate the potential of marching band. I understand that the bands I saw only a small percentage of all high school bands. And maybe if we all expected more from marching band, and not constantly give into that stereotype, then maybe organizations all over the United States can push to reach their full potential like the 12 bands I saw did.

If we say the term “marching band” with scorn then that’s the way it will be perceived forever and always. All of us who support marching music should never look down to marching band ever, and last night at BOA finals finally proved that to me.

Agreed that when you see BOA bands you see drum corps, which is another way of saying, when you see drum corps, you see bands.

When you were at the show, did you happen to catch the really cool flute flashes to-the-box?

Orwoll (from Colts) brings up an interesting point towards the end:

There it is, folks. Partnering with NAMM and MENC isn't part of some tin-foil-hat conspiracy . . .but, there's the "in" on how drum corps will more than likely end up if we don't see some sort of change in the touring model.

With a school program (and I wonder if it might be a summer offshoot of colleges, there are certainly enough previous examples of this in some form . . .Spirit/JSU, BD and RCC, etc), corps will be able to latch onto public funding for at least some of their touring dollars, depending on how this might be set up.

I don't blame Orwoll for exploring the idea . . .but, if it leads to summer versions of college band, I don't think I'd be much interested in it.

There are some other ideas . . .the return of the regional model (the one we got away from to begin with, heh) and possibly shortening the season by a week.

There's another interesting quote from Hop regarding relevancy, but I'm going to do a separate thread on that.

So, how about it? What would you think of the idea of drum corps partnering up with college music programs, possibly to the point that we might see an instrumentation change?

Way to pass the kool-aid and perform your roll as a Hoppy apologist Bawker!

What a novel idea: add new instruments i.e. woodwinds. Wow! Something DCI hasn't been planning for years! What a coincidence that for some time we've had woodwinds in I&E, and that DCI moved to the same town/building as BOA. I'm sure these have nothing to do with massaging a slow but sure comfort level into DCI audience sensibilities who you believe would stay if they could just get accustomed to those cute little whiny reed instruments.

You and Drum Corps World's bando advocacy is laughingly transparent.

    Nice try.

  15. Dr. Dale,

Frank da Beard's real name is Frank Lozar. Most of us Wisconsinites have only ever known him

as "Frank da Beard". I first met Frank in 1978 as a rookie in the Boys of 76 and over the years

have developed a friendship with Frank. He's one of the good guys in the activity for sure!

Frank is 82 now, and I'm not sure he's making the trip this year.

    On a side note:

Frank was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 2005. From the WDCHOF web site:

    FRANK LOZAR

Frank Lozar has a record of lifetime dedication to drum & bugle corps. He began playing a soprano horn in 1947 and has continued marching and playing without interruption for 58 years. At the age of 77, he still marches and plays with a competitive corps, the Minnesota Brass. Frank was the Director of MB from 1963-1969. He also performed with Hamms Indians for 6 years and has also performed with the Zuhral Shrine.

    See you this weekend, brother.

Frank's last years marching with Brass were in the early 2000's. He stopped by one of our rehearsals in 2006.

You can bet he'll make it to Rochester if he is able!
