  1. Sad news to report. From John Wooton:

"I am sorry I have not posted more news about Marty lately, but recently there hasn't been a lot of good news. Today Marty decided to move on. He has been released from the hospital and all tubes have been removed. He is comfortable and at home. He requested no visitors during his final days. God Bless Marty Hurley."

  2. Oh, come on now!!! Look, I know I marched BD and you obviously marched with "THE REGIMENT," but you're planning on going THERE???? Last time the wife and I went to that dreadful place, we ended up brushing elbows with most of the gangbangers on Chicago's NW side!!!!

We live about a mile and half down North Ave from that place, but we're headed up to Evanston. You sure you don't wanna make the short drive up there? We'll buy you and yours a drink at the piano bar!!!!

Thanks for the offer! But I already have my ticket.

I live about 2 miles up Western from the theater, so it's convenient. I went there for quarters in 08 and didn't have any problems other than the regular movie crowd being primarily teens & pre-teens. Granted, I don't think I've been there again since then, but I just don't go to movies much.

Anyone else going to this theater?

  3. Corps build stamina by having lots of days like the one you've described, not by resting.

Nevermind the fact that if they didn't have full rehearsals on show days, they wouldn't have anywhere near enough rehearsal time in the season. Major (regional/championship) show days generally have a more relaxed feel to them and staff makes sure they get plenty of sleep the night before, but they can't ease up on rehearsal time - that's what's building stamina and getting them to their mental & physical peak.

If a corps "had no energy, ran out of steam at the end or just looked tired" then either A) there were some extenuating circumstances (bus issues, etc) that affected them or B) (more likely) they haven't yet built up enough endurance to fully perform their show on a regular basis and they need MORE tough days, not less.

  4. No guard should be audibly counting during a performance. Counts (and sub counts) are at the root of all guard work and counting out loud is a very appropriate rehearsal technique when learning and cleaning work - it helps the performers memorize the work, nail down the tempo and develop the muscle memory for what they're doing. But during a performance, they should only be counting in their head, not out loud. At the same time, guard members should also be looking to those in front of them to help ensure correct timing but not as a que for anything unless they're doing a ripple effect. Newly learned work is likely to be less clean (i.e. have timing and technique issues) than work that a guard has had and been rehearsing for weeks.

The Regiment guard still has a lot of work to do to improve their performance both from a content stand point as well as a cleanliness and technique stand point. And they're working hard on it every day.

Regarding the new entrance that we saw in Rockford..... that was unique and designed specifically for that show because of the stadium's access points. The entrance (and exit) at each show going forward will likely vary depending on each stadium's access points with a special entrance and exit plan for Lucas Oil Stadium..... just wait and see.

  5. I too am driving up from Chicago on Friday evening. For brunch or lunch on Saturday, will be getting together with some other PR alums from the 80s who live up there. Plans TBD.

I recommend the Marriott Courtyard in Roseville. Easy access, free parking, good rates and about 10-15 minutes from the stadium. Plus, the Director of Sales is a PR alum.

I won't be doing any post-show activities because I'm getting up early on Sunday to drive back down to Rockford for the Show of Shows. You'll be driving right through Rockford and should stop in for the show there that night. I'm driving back home to Chicago Monday morning, but it's feasible to drive back Sunday night after the show in Rockford.

Looking forward to a great weekend of drum corps and old friends!

PS. I'm obvioulsy not a Cavalier person. (Though I have many friends who marched Cavaliers way back when.)

  6. PHANTOM REGIMENT - ....... I am really anxious to see this from higher (on video) to see this crazy drill Myron wrote for them. From my seats I could see a little of it, but simply their velocity was amazing. I still don't see how they can move like that without you hearing any drop-off in sound. The overall brass sound from Phantom was a little different than past years, possibly because they lacked a few tuba players. It was extremely mello-dominant (like it usually is), but the other sections didn't seem to be pushing the air like they usually do. In my opinion, Phantom was only the 4th loudest hornline, and when is the last time you could say that about them in a show with only 7 corps? .......

My bet is that these two things are directly related. Fortunately, the season's young. :)

I also feel like their sound is a little "bright" this year. That's not something we're used to hearing from Regiment. It's probably partially due to lack of enough tubas at the moment but also probably because of the show's theme.... Into the Light.

    Thanks for the review!

PS. Thanks for the disclaimer & background at the beginning of your review! I hate reading reviews from other people who are completely incognito yet expect us to believe they have a high level of expertise.

  8. okay so is it the same soloist or not? I thought it was up until this week somebody told me it wasn't...

but i think rcawth should probably know so I will just take his word for now...

I was told by a current staff member on Thursday night at dress rehearsal that the current soloist is a rookie who came to Regiment this year from another, smaller corps.

Now.... that said.... it is not out of the realm of possibility that the staff member was wrong.

  9. I am not sure if anyone posted this on this thread but I have to say something. This year I will really be rooting for Regiment. Of course cavies are my favorite but Phantom Regiment comes in second on my list... but anyways I live in Huntsville TX and I met this fellow at a store and he saw me wearing my cavaliers shirt and asked me if I marched with them. Of course I said no and said that I was just a hardcore fan of them. So then he told me he marched with Phantom back in the late 70's early 80's... and we spent a whole afternoon talking about drum corps... he knew so much and just when I was going to ask him to tag along with me to the Houston shows he died in a car accident. I was extremely sad for awhile. So this year at the Houston show I will scream the loudest for Phantom Regiment. Just for him. I find it amazing that the name of their show is "Into the Light" I think its rather appropriate.

Wow - You must have crossed paths with Dan Bohan. Very sad. Wonderful guy. I knew him and many of the guys I marched with knew him even better than I did. Devasting loss for PR alumni. :( Glad he had an impact on you as well.

  10. Sigh. No, it's not yours unless you keep it totally to yourself and are using it for personal purposes like studying it for future ideas. Even then the videotaping of it is not always legal in the first place. If the show announces prohibitions of videotaping equipment, then you already crossed a legal line.

The show design is the ensemble's, and the music is held by a music publishing house and/or composer's legal entities and is used with permission by the ensemble. Here's a close analogy: you go to a movie theater and take a video of whatever recent film is playing. You post it on the website-not-to-be-named. You're illegally transmitting copyrighted material that has its own huge set of legal constraints.

Whether or not we think it's right or logical doesn't matter. It's the law.

I think it's time high school curricula included a course every year that addressed these legal issues so people understand it before they wind up on the nasty end of this legal sticky wicket.

I love this thread right now and this post in particular.

Finally some voices of reason as opposed to simply the voices of "entitlement".

    Thank you!

ajlemm: "Has PR included any new elements? Their ending seemed a little bit of a letdown and lots of standing last time I saw them."

I saw the show yesterday. Yes - lots of changes in movements 1 & 2 and overall but not the closer. I wouldn't expect to see substantial changes to the closer until Allentown (or MAYBE Atlanta, but I doubt it).

Question - why the thread title "Unfair Fairfield"?
