  1. Had the luxury of watching the show last night in Denton.  My quick thoughts......

    - Can corps just go back to using helmets?   Especially Cavies and SCV.  I feel like there is a looming identity crisis.  There are few corps that remain instantly recognizable, which is a shame.  I applaud PR for bringing their helmets back, but I would of preferred they stayed on throughout the show.   It’s official.   I’m an old fart.

    - I was really surprised with Regiment.  Wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but they brought it last night and gave this alum some goosebumps.

    - The talent level in DCI has grown so much over the years.  It’s hard to believe that this could be a 12th place show.  Regiment clearly has the talent to make a move and I hope the design team provides them that opportunity.

    - Hey brass line, if you’re reading this.....you sound great.  Keep pushing yourself and don’t let up.   IMO, you’re better than the scores reflect.  That being said, that final hit in Fire of Eternal Glory?  We were ready to throw our babies, but your breathing and entrances back into FFFFF took away from the moment.  There was a lead Sop that took 4-5 breaths in that chord alone and attacked like a MF when they came back in.

We sat low and close to the 50.  IMO, Biggest ovations last night went to (in order):

    - Crown

    - SCV (likely higher if everyone wasn’t racing to the exits)

    - Regiment

    - BC

    - Cavies

Nice work Regiment, love seeing you guys lay it all out there for us!

  2. Anyone know for certain who the designers were of the PR 2000 program that included Transfigured Night.

    Thanks!

Most everything was posted already, but here is what I remember.

    Brass Arranger - Michael Klesch

Drill Design - began with Brian Hildreth, replaced by Leon May

    Percussion - Brian Mason

    Guard - Jennifer Leseth

    Program Coordinator - Dan Farrell

  3. But from what I'm told, they really don't, especially when the public isn't around. I suppose that's all a matter of opinion, but screaming at and berating the kids for mistakes isn't the "professional" way to run a drum corps. Nor is making a member stand out in the rain for two hairs straight holding up a horn for letting a laugh slip out during rehearsal.

Take the Cavaliers' mentality: They treat the kids as absolute professionals. They expect hard work and they get it, but they don't tear someone down in the process. Flip all of that upside down and you get a "bad day" at Phantom Regiment rehearsal. Some call the Cavies a part of Drum Corps Country Club. I call it common decency towards some very committed and talented individuals.

I suppose that makes me "soft" to some people. I've had dear friends march in both corps, and they both seem partial to their own system...but when I hear how Phantom works when there aren't public eyes around compared to the Cavaliers, it just makes me sad. I'm all for discipline and hard work, but there's still a right way and a wrong way to do that, IMO.

You're entitled to your own opinion, but I'm really biting my tongue on what I want to say about your posts in this thread. It's obvious you don't understand why someone would march in PR vs. Cavies, and it sounds like you've got your mind set on the "Rosemont way" of Drum Corps.

  4. I'VE GOT IT! PR! Why not put a chalice on the drum major podium. He can drink it in the sad part at the end of the ballad and slowly die on the podium (instead of marching off all awkwardly).

Then after he slowly dies on the podium, Juliet could come to the podium and weep his death, and kill herself...

not sure if that was sarcasm or not, but that actually sounds like a good idea, although a bit on the cheesy side.

  5. So in your opinion do we need to put an asterisk next to the scores of all the previous seasons that you have seen? I would think so if this is indeed the first time the judges are not basing their scores on "previous results" and are finally showing "no bias."

WOW...what an indictment against the judges of the past...

however many years you've been watching.

not sure what an asterisk would fix, but if that's what you propose....

I've only been following the activity since 98 when I started marching, I never pretended to be a die hard follower since the inception. But I'll stand by my opinion, that since I have been following the activity, most judges seemed to have a bias AND scored based on prior results. I'll add to this, that I am not naive enough to believe this is all fixed either, but it is definitely better.

  6. I wish everyone would take a step back and really look at what has happened with the scores this year. For the first time that I have seen, judges are scoring based on individual shows, not based on the seasons results up to this point. Caption scores are obviously indicating that any personal bias towards a certain corps are, at least for the time being, a thing of the past.

I'm frustrated because for years this is what the fans wanted. Each and every night, it is anyones show to win or lose. Granted, at this point in the season we have a pretty good idea of which shows are in the running come August. If you are on this thread, complaining that corps X should be 8th across the board in every caption because of a prior show, then my opinion is that your opinion holds no value (i.e. sucks). Set aside your personal bias, and enjoy the uncertainty of each night. If your corps performs beyond the judges expectation, I believe the recaps will reflect it. Likewise, if they were no better than the any of the corps prior, they should be placed accordingly.

I have also started noticing a couple of sub-caption "ties" this year. I don't remember if this has been going on in the past and I just haven't noticed it. I was getting a little tired of the "place corps X lower than you wanted because there were still 15 corps to go on" approach. If the Colts come out and give a perfect brass performance, give 'em a 10. If the Devils do the same, give 'em a 10......nothing wrong with that.

  7. I think I need to stay off of here for awhile until I cool down. Those scores are WACK.

How many years have we been complaining there was no honesty in judging? How many conspiracy threads have there been over the years? It's refreshing to see judges calling it like they see it, as opposed to slotting them neatly into 1st, 2nd, 3rd place.

  8. It's the Holdridge version of East of Eden, which is absolutely wonderful.

It's perfect for introducing the Juliet character.

recommended it here, and couldn't be happier that it's Phantom playing it:

Just listened to this version on the "site not to be mentioned". Man there are some great possibilities with this piece. If Regiment is using this one, I am REALLY excited to see what they do with it.

  9. Going into Finals week, many had a gut feeling BD would surpass the 99.15 mark to set an all time record. Looking at the recaps, they swept every caption, with the exception of percussion (4th) and scoring only .3 from surpassing the record.

Regiment went on very early in the evening, winning the perc. trophy, basically forcing the judges to leave room for those yet to perform. This was probably the worst thing possible for BD.

If Regiment went on later in the evening (slotted even 4th or 5th), with the same amazing line, I believe a 19.9 could have easily been within their grasp. If the scores followed suit, those are the .3 BD was missing to make history.

    Thoughts?

  10. Klesch also brought along a tech from Boston that year, Chris Holland. He was old school, one of those guys you probably wouldn't want to cross in a bar. Anyway, they were both a great guys, and taught us all a lot that season. It's my favorite year from what many would consider the "lost" years.

I can't remember if is was 2000 or 2001, but we also worked a bit with Matt Harloff and an arranger for Blast (cant remember his name though).

  11. To be fair to BD, Phantom recieved 2 subcaption 10's also, which should have never been given out with 2 corps remaining. The highest they should have been given is a 9.8, to at least allow BD and Cavies a chance to beat them.

If anyone on the field receives a 10 in anything, common sense tells us it should only be the final corps performing.

Not that it really matters, but my opinion is that a 10 constitutes perfection. Each of the top 4 are phenomenal, but they are all far from perfect.

  12. The problem is that we see the whole show, whereas there are 9 judges each (supposedly) looking at a different aspect. That being said, and to reiterate, the visual scores are ridiculous! They should not be a point back...

Well, I wish that were true. Even the GE Vis judge tonight said he didnt just watch visual, but also factored music into his judging as well (not verbatim, but something to that effect). Probably not the smartest thing to say on a live broadcast, but it comes as no suprise. Just makes me wonder how many other captions this is factored into.

Overall, a great night of Drum Corps! While I dont agree with all of the scores, we would be silly to think anything else would have happened. More of the same old same old....

Quick thoughts on the night (cinecast):

    - This years finalists will be phenomenal!

    - HOLY TROOPERS! Awesome Show!

    - Madison and Crossmen were both much cleaner than Glassmen, really suprised by the spread

    - Bluecoats horn block......I was glad I brought and extra pair of shorts......one of the best brass moments tonight!

    - SCV's drill is ridiculous! They are marching the hell out of it!

    - Cadets....George said it all. The corps proper is incredible, the execution of the concept was weak. Looking forward to Holy Name in 09.

    - LOVED Crowns show, but felt the lead into the ending is weak (which is weird for a show based on endings). I think they've pretty much topped out score wise, but they have earned the right to be considered a top echelon corps!

    - I'm a Regiment homer, so I'll just say that the show was absolutely phenomenal! I only wish I could see it live.

    - Cavies feel safe. Safe music, safe drill, very little GE or impact points. Visual performance is remarkable though.

    - BD is performing at a level I havent seen from them in years. That guard is mesmerizing!

    - And what on earth is up with 4 perfect 10's in the Visual Caption? Should anyone really deserve a "perfect" score?

    - I do think that the fact that PR went on 4th from last, forced the judges into scoring the others significantly lower than usual. I was afraid BD would pop out a 98 with Cavies in the mid 97's, which is what typically happens at the top on quarters night. It will be interesting to see how things pan out tomorrow with those 3 fillng up the final spots.
