  1. Cavaliers had many issues this year. But they still came off entertaining to quite a few. In fact their little "dub step" thingy at the end got quite the crowd reaction. It was actually the only thing they visually performed together all year. Although I hated every second of it.

They aren't in trouble. They'll be back competing for a title before we know it. The biggest thing I'm worried about it that they couldn't march their drill and the horns had a lot of issues all season long. I know there has been a lot of praise for their caption head on here. But I don't know about that. Yes they are certainly louder than they used to be, but the quality sure has been lacking. They still have some nice moments, but there are a lot of harsh sounds that need to be squashed by the horn staff. They are lucky they have talent, that's all I'm gonna say.

I'm still trying to decide what was the bigger problem this year, performance or design. I mean they couldn't march that drill... it was quite hard. Gaines was great at wowing us with actual easy to march drill moves, and really smart staging, and really not much running going on while playing. Their drill this year was good, but hard. Hard to sound good while marching, especially since they were not marching their technique well in the first place.

I don't know. My eyes and ears were just in disbelief. They'll get their #### together though. I hope. I really did not like the show. Drums were killer though...

You have answered your own questions. If they are marching really hard drill (and not achieving it) , then it will show up in how they play. Pretty simple.

  2. First off, the Cavaliers sitting in 7th place should let you know that there are ZERO of these "politics" you speak of going on. Next to Blue Devils, Cavaliers have been the most consistant placing corps in the activity.

Second, just because you and your age group don't like the ending doesn't mean that the high schoolers who are watching it don't like it. If you haven't noticed, this activity has gotten boring. Mostly because everything has pretty much been plalyed and is being recycled. It's time to start appealing to the younger crowd. Which seems to be what the Cavaliers have been doing for awhile. Not everyone gets off on I IV V chords.

In all honesty nobody should even be concerned with what the older people think, because their time in drum corps is OVER. The young children in the stadium should be the ones that they're trying to impress, seeing as how they're going to be the future of this activity.

So if they want to do a little dance at the end of the show to entertain the crowd (which is what people pay to see) then so be it. It actually fits in the show, so i don't see why you people complain about everything they do.

Listen to the Cavaliers show a little closer and I think you will find that they are not playing a lot of standard chord progressions, certainly not the standard keys. So, maybe the activity DOES want a lot of II/V/I in B-flat and E-flat....

  3. I always thought show line-ups were based on current scoring trends. Cavies on last? Crossmen are 1/2 hour before intermission but Glassmen and Troopers are on after. Just an observation, I know there are as many theories on line-up as there are on slotting.

No. Show line-ups are set months in advance for every show except regionals and finals week.

  4. I know. I love the Cavaliers organization, and the corps. Why does any remotely negative comment about Cavies get followed up by "they are a great corps with a great history" or "they have great fans, yada yada yada". I realize that. It's just like every drum corps.

Because it is the classy response. Anytime someone gets on here and says anything remotely negative about Crown or Madison on here people freak out and that person gets dog-piled.

Considering how bad the cavaliers have been beaten up on this forum and how much some people have relished in their competitive struggles this year, you don't hear lots of people on here crying foul. They are having a down year this year, but I have seen the corps rehearse. You would not know that they are struggling by how they rehearse. The still have talented kids and staff there. It is not like they forgot how to teach, design, and perform overnight. They are taking risks and trying new things and some of them are not working out. They will bounce back just fine.

  5. lol, nice now 'PC' title.

I am probably missing something, but can someone explain what Dies Irae has to do with Fame?

The Dies Irae you are hearing is from Michael Daugherty's Dead Elvis.

Also I see lady gaga and' THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING on the rep list, but didn't hear it. I was excited about hall of the mountain king ... hmm..

It's in there in the closer.

  6. To be clear you were the one to compare 2010 Cavies vs. Blue Stars not me so why are you now lecturing about different years, judges and sheets?. I simply pointed out that I was more concerned that the spread between Cavies and Blue Stars was more scary than the gap between them and Crown in 2012.

Yes. I was the one comparing the spreads. I was comparing because I think it is ridiculous. I think your basis is ridiculous. For anything you say about a spread early season I can find a year and an example that refutes it just like I can find an example that supports it. It is not an exact science and what we see early season may or may not have any bearing on what we see at the end of the season. I have seen corps come out early season and get beat by nearly 5 points and then go on to break the scoring barrier at the end of the season (see cadets 2005). I have seen corps change almost their entire show throughout the season (BD 2002), and that is just recent memory.

I have been in and around this activity for a while. Long enough to tell you that the spreads, the scores, the placements (for the most part) don't matter early season. They just don't. If the cavaliers are still struggling mid July, then lets talk.

  7. You're right, early season 3-pointing in 2010 caused some freak outs....but Cavies very nearly got FIVE pointed last night by Crown. That's a world of difference. That's generally a completely different tier.

You are right. The cavaliers DID get three pointed by Crown at the first show. They were the third of three corps at that show.

BUT, the next show that spread opened up to 3.5 points (still 3rd of 3 corps.

The show after that, the spread opened up again to 4.1 points (3rd of 5, but the next two corps were spirit and teal sound).

If Phantom & Bluecoats would have been at those first few shows in 2010, they probably would have beaten Cavaliers too and the spread would hav been even larger. They were that bad early season. DCP was blowing up with all of these know it alls claiming the end of the cavaliers organization since they had a big staff turnover (new corps director, new brass staff, new percussion arranger and staff, new guard caption head, new visual caption head) combined with a poor early season showing. There were lots of folks learning how to work together for the first time and they eventually got it together and challenged for the top spot.

Folks, I am telling you that it will be alright. They have lots of good people there that know what they are doing and have prepared corps before. The only new faces on staff are the drill designer, and a few techs. Everything else is intact and almost identical to what they have had the last 2 years. So logic would dictate that they know how to get things moving in the right direction.

  8. I think there is less of a concern that Cavies got beat by Crown at a 4.6 spread. What really concerns me is that Cavies only beat Blue Stars by a 3.25 spread.

In 2010 they were only .9 away from them at a show.... At finals Cavaliers finished 2nd (97.75) and Blue Stars finished 8th (91.9).

    Relax. It's June.

  9. Am i the only one that noticed that bashing the Cavies people say close thread and its a shame but others do it to BD and no one ever says that? Just something i noticed.

People do defend the blue devils. Also, it is a different kind of bashing. People don't like what BD does. This thread is claiming that the cavaliers are done for the season. The title imply's that the corps is dead.

I suggest that people go back and read some of the post on this forum from 2010. The number of threads claiming the cavaliers were dead was overwhelming. Early season they were sitting in 7th or 8th, and they steadily improved throughout the season.

It is early season folks. Give it time. In the middle of July if the cavaliers are still struggling then we can hit the panic button.

  10. Cavaliers are getting early season credit. Give it a week and you will see some separation. The Cavaliers' brass score in Louisville was questionable at best. I would have put Blue Stars ahead of Cavaliers in brass...and visual performance.

I am going to take the exact opposite opinion. In a couple of weeks you are going to see cavaliers get closer and closer.

    See you then.

  11. Are the Cavaliers in trouble this year... Two nights in a row they were said to be weak in brass and vis? Wow anyone care to further comment? Curious if staff changes over past few years are starting to affect the corps? Just curious, luv the Cavies and hope they'll pick it up:)

    Wes P

Cavaliers are fine. The show is hard and they can't do it yet. They will be fine.

Two years ago they were in seventh at the beginning of the season and DCP was claiming that they were sunk (this was the year after a big staff change). They ended up finishing second in horns, second in drums, second in feet, second in guard, an second overall.

Last year the Cadets took fourth at the first show and crown took first. At the end of the season those positions were reversed.

It is June. The Cavaliers have a very capable staff. They will be fine.

  12. I would expect nothing less from someone with your avatar.

    Hinshaw = overrated

Bookmark this, come back and make me eat crow. You won't, because you won't be able to.

It never ceases to amaze me how little respect the Cavaliers organization gives Michael Gaines, and how much respect everyone else gives him. We've heard this since '01. He has had a large influence in the organization's sucess.

Ok. This is what got me. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. I know you marched one year at the cavaliers, but the way things have been the last few, The Cavaliers gave NOTHING but respect to Gaines. Whatever Gaines wanted Gaines got and there were never any questioning it. People understood how much he gave to the organization in regards to his visual genius and let him do whatever he wanted.

With that being said, I think Gaines is great. Possibly the best ever, but I do think that Hinshaw will be great for The Cavaliers. So, I am going to take your advice and book mark your post and we will see you in a few months.

  13. I most certainly hope you are kidding. First of all, I hope you didn't just announce the program for SCV. I like Mars and Jupiter, but you have ruined all forms of anticipation I had from them.

That being said, it is never wise to announce what a corps is playing... For instance I have a friend who is at the Troopers camp this weekend and she isn't telling me anything that is really going on there. And she told me a few things about The Cavaliers music because she knows someone who auditioned for them. Now, i'm not going to even say the things that I "heard" I don't know what they are playing but I would rather not start any rumors that might not be true. That being said... Go drum corps.

Your "friend" is telling a tall tale. The Cavaliers have not said a single thing to their members about what they are playing much less passed out the music. Last time I checked, the opener wasn't even written yet and they hadn't finished picking all of the music in the show.

  14. Are we really gonna start blaming the panel a week before the show?

I could blame the AFTER the show like most people do. Also, read my past posts. I am not a fan of blaming the judges or using the most common cop-out: politics.

It is not a great panel for The Cavaliers if you look at past scoring. Typically, those judges have scored them lower, BUT I will say that if The Cavaliers throw down this weekend it shouldn't matter..... and that is how it should be.

  15. Adjudication Panel

    Visual Effect – Tim Ochran

Visual Effect 2 – Michael Stone

    Music Effect – Nola Jones

Music Effect 2 – David Starnes

    Visual Performance – Michael Lentz

    Ensemble Visual – Deborah Torchia

    Color Guard – George Oliviero

    Brass Performance – Jeff Harper

    Ensemble Music – Jay Webb

    Percussion Performance – Martin Griffin

Wow. Pretty much the worst panel possible for The Cavaliers. Wouldn't be shocked if they lost to BD & the Cadets.

  16. My feelings exactly! "Through a Glass Darkly" is one of the greatest designed shows both music and visual wise ever put on the field, imho.

I agree completely. It is one of those shows that I hated at first and then find myself wanting to watch it again and again.

It was like watching "Requiem for a Dream." I went from being uncomfortable to angry at the guy who made me watch it, to wanting to see it again, to thinking it was one of the best movies ever made.

  17. Where does that come? The Cavies list "Footsteps" on their program, and I thought I was familiar with the original, but I still haven't tracked it down in their performance.

Footprints is the second tune that they are doing. It was originally written by Wayne Shorter, but the version they are going off of is the Babba Yaga version.

  18. I've been running some numbers on the tilts various judges have for and against certain corps. There's not enough data to say anything with confidence, but while the OP is right that Debbie Torchia tends to underrate the Cavies compared to other judges (by -0.38 in whatever subcaption, by my calculations), Marie Czapinski has been almost equally hard on the Cavaliers this year: -0.33.

Debbie's not the hardest on the Cavies, though. Mike Stone hits them hardest (-0.5) followed by Albert Lo and Bret Mascaro.

And for what it's worth the judges who most favor the Cavies are John Bell (+1.23) and Peter Funari (+1.21).

    /geekout

PS: all the numbers are based just on 2011, and are probably meaningless.

The other night I asked some of the guys on horn staff about Albert Lo putting them in third at the Denton show. Their response was "We were the third best hornline tonight. We need to play better." They went on to talk about how they like him as a judge and hope he is there finals week.... So, the statistics don't seem to match how their staff feels about him as a judge.

I believe people read to much into the judges bias. It is an easy way out when your corps isn't scoring where you want them. It is the number one excuse, followed by my favorite excuse: "politics."
