  1. Figure 4 ppl to a room, 180 ppl with staff and volunteers, thats 45 rooms and $100 per room per night is only $4500 per night. Figure 4 nights would be $18,000 (and saving the 12% room tax for being NPO!) that would only be $18,000 for the opportunity to give their corps a great opportunity to perform at their best. Negotiate a smaller room cost and even better.

I'd consider that a great investment. I'm assuming that they have to pay for 4 nights of staying at a school anyway so you would deduct that amt also to figure the extra expense.

  2. 1977 Madison Wisconsin. Blue Stars on the field. We played Planets that years with the umbrellas in the show. The show starts out with 8 big impacts. Dah dah dah dah dadadada. Silence. CRASH! Lightning. Thunder. Right in beat with the show. Of course, a little lightning and thunder never stopped a corps back then. We continue with the thunder coming in in perfect accent to our show (almost like we ordered it). Fits right in with the umbrellas too. It really hyped us up. Best show I think we had all year.

We get to the part of spinning planets. I'm in the farthest one out on side 2 and am spinning out to the back of the field so I can't see anyone.

The announcer starts yelling DIP SH**! DIP SH**! I'm wondering why he's yelling awful things at us because the show is freaking awesome. As I come around the far side of the circle I see the rest of my corps running off the field and there are only 5 or six of us who are still in that stupid circle.

Turns out the announcer was ex military or something and was yelling at us to "DITCH IT!".

  3. Whatever corps they "belonged" to, I hope you don't let them tarnish your opinion of that organization.

Every corps has people like that. Every high school does too. Sports teams, even entire countries have people that act this way.

Unfortunately, it's just part of life.

I hope you were still able to enjoy the show as much as possible!

Never. I've met plenty of people from several of the corps that were there last night and have almost always had a positive experience, including their corps. That is why I didn't name the corps.

And yes, I had an amazing time!

  4. The name of the corps related to this fan doesn't matter because it wasn't specific to one corps.

So I was at the Madison show last night. A couple who had a kid in one of the competing corps sat in front of me all night. Never applauded or reacted in any positive way to any of the corps, including their kid's corps. Ran down each corps after their performance. They weren't loud and obnoxious about it but it could be heard by those around them.

Why in the world does someone go to a drum corps show just to ##### and look for the negative? At first I thought it was just an ###**** thing towards other corps but not even reacting to your kid's corps? Man, you must be a riot at parties. The funniest thing was that there were other parents/alumni from that corps around them and not.one.person stopped to say hi or pass the time of day or offer encouragemen to their kid. I wonder why?

Just a reminder that the members in ALL the corps need out support to continue to want to perform for us. I cheered loudest for my corps but I cheered and applauded for every.single.corps that performed, no matter their skill levels.

  5. I like that he doesn't spend half the article explaining what drum corps is. I also like that there are 2 other stories about Blue Stars. Gotta love LaCrosse.

I was at the Blue Stars camp this week doing alterations. The uniform is very striking. That gray on the pictures you see here is very washed out compared to actual color. Also, the star really does pop. They look long and lean and make for a very crisp look on the field under the lights. The gray also makes the colorguard work just pop out. First fittings are now needing alterations as they have lost their spring training weight so some of them did admittedly look a little floppy. That is an ongoing process, as we all know.

I think those who are on the fence will be in Camp Blue Stars when you see them under the lights.
