  1. I'm going with you were sitting to low. Drums may have been tuned high. Staging usually plays a role here as well...

Basically it could be any or all the things mentioned above.

I'm curious, what Corps' are you referring too?

  2. Please do - I haven't seen Bass Logic yet, so I'm curious to hear a review.

    Mike

I found tenor logic more informative then bass logic. I suppose seeing I am bass drummer I knew a lot of the stuff all ready in the book. He does have some good insight on tuning for different configurations (4 man line, 5 man line, etc...) and what type of player should be on each drum (assuming physical stature is constant of course ;) ) Bass Logic is good for those foreign to basic Bass Drumming Techniques. I more or less bought the book for my kids in my line to read so they had a better understanding of stuff I was talking about in rehearsals.

I think tenor logic just gives a tad bit more info. That being said, bass logic is probably the best bass druming book out right now for the more "modern" style of bass drumming. It has a couple REALLY good timing exercises as well.

  3. While the NFL/NBA drumline phenomenon is cool, it has nothing to do with DCI or DCM. If an individual drumline is developed in affiliation with a corps, it is because that corps seized the opportunity.

This is true. For example, the Bears line is affiliated with the Cavaliers but the Packers Drum Line is affiliated with no one particular group.

  4. I'm so old that when I read the Subject I thought is was referring to the things placed under snares and tenors back in the day !

Yep, as previously stated above. Still done, maybe not so much on tenors but definitly on snares.

All thought in first reading the subject I thought the same thing...so does that make me old (like you imply) or just a typical drummer

  5. Goo Gone usually works for snare heads, never tried it on bass drums.

It works on bass heads just the same but you are going to go through a lot more of it. I suggest using stuff you can get in bulk. Your local hardware stores paint department has plenty to choose from ;)

  6. Thanks for the tips guys!

The high school I teach have turned the heads to have the name level but for some reason every time they harness up, they are still not. I said just take the names off and dont worry about it or hassle with it but my perc guy wasn't sure what to use. Besides, Yamaha doesn't give us anything for using their drums why should I advertise their name?

    Thanks again!

I take them off anyway. HS Kids (especially ones that end up playing bass) are usually not experienced enough or physically adapted to carrying equipment correctly so even if you level them there is always a tendency for them to lean one way or the other.

It sounds like the labels were leveled with the drums off the kids. The easiest and most accurate way to leveling them is to always do it with the drums on the player.

Another reason I just take them off is that no matter how much leveling you do some of the kids usually end up losing weight (especially if they were a little out of shape to start) and the label almost always ends up leaning as the pounds come off.

  7. Acetone (find it in the paint section at Home Depot, Lowes, Etc...)

It's basically nail polish remover. Soak a rag and poor some on the label. Hold the rag down on the print for a few seconds to let the Acetone eat at the paint. Wipe off. Continue to do this until the label is gone. As a precaution I wipe it down with water afterwards. I have never had a problem with this damaging the head in anyway. Just don't get it on any print you want to keep.

I find that taking off one letter at a time is the best way to keep the paint form smearing and making the task take longer then it should.

It evaporates pretty rapidly so don't leave the cap off while you are cleaning.

  8. Question is, where do you park? Soldier Field makes Camp Randall look like a parking garage?

Camp Randall is bigger then Soldier Field so really its the other way around. Camp Randall holds 80,321 where Soldier Field sneaks in at 61,500.

Regardless, even given the hypothetical situation that finals where to be in Chicago it won't be at Soldier Field for reasons stated before. There is a good chance that the NFL team that plays there could have a game. Plus expense would be high.

Toyota Park is fairly similar situation as the Rochester site with it being a Soccer field (home of the MLS Chicago Fire) good location...tons of parking. A lot easier to get to for those fans living outside of the city in the burbs yet close to the city.

  9. DCA at Soldier Field? That would be a well attended contest I think.

If anything Toyota Park would be the better venue. Soldier Field would be way to pricey, you also have the NFL preseason going and the logistics could be a nightmare.

There would also have to be a few years of East Coast corps coming out this way for a show to help promote DCA a bit. But don't kid yourself Drum Corps is very much alive in the midwest so I think any contest out here (if well promoted) would be well attended.

  10. Just so y'all know--I'm a very, very large man. If I bump into somebody without carrying a drum, there's a chance they'll get hurt--I know that from experience. I'm not going to put myself into a situation where I have an increased chance to run into things.

The chain worked fine to get the drum down to where I could see. The problem we had involved the carrier not fitting my torso worth a ####--the lower plate was several inches too high and I ended up with back cramps due to the weight of the drum not resting on my hips. The carriers may fit Jeff's skinny body well--they don't fit XXXL bodies worth a hoot.

The drum is lighter than the drums I carried before, so the weight, itself, isn't a problem. We just need to find a carrier that fits my old, fat body properly and I'll be able to carry the drum for as long as I can stand up.

So, who knows where to get an XXXL carrier?

Have you tried the Randall May? I ask only because you mentioned you are a "large" dude and I march with a guy on bass 5 that is 6'4" ish about 285 lbs and he seems to fit the harness just fine.

  11. I can't see over mine (bass 3 - 22"). To me it just looks sloppy having the bass sit low on the players body...plus it puts my hands in a better playing position.

You get used to it and use your left to right relationship to keep you from running into anyone.

For instance in a Die 5 parade form if you guide a diagonal through Bass 3 and keep your relationship to the person to your left or right you should never run into the person in front of you. If it's a 4 man block just keep your spacing between left to right and use the person at your 45 to gauge your front to back.

In field shows you just need to know your spots and trust the others around you know their stuff given your head and body position.

I personally wouldn't rig it but if the player is going to freak then do what you have to. Good luck.

  12. The fact that I can't even picture where Perkins is in Racine tells me something. Because I would normally love Perkins.

Yeah the Perkins in Racine is terrible. Has been since it opened probably 3 years ago. Dan, it's located by the Shopko on HWY 20 across from the Walgreens about a mile east from the Denny's. There isn't much in that area for those types of restaurants. Denny's is probably it. There is an IHOP by the mall. Otherwise you would have to drive further into downtown.

  13. Is it just me, or are DCA judges the best on the planet? Because I don't think any other corps, including DCI who go head to head each night, jump 1.5 points overnight (MBI) . What is the reasoning behind this? To boost averages or to keep them in the hunt after hearing Saturday night's scores?:worthy:

    Hard work

  14. That should be a lot of fun. I hope the guys and gals from MN, IL, KY and MI are ready for a good evening.

Rumor has it this party is so big it may also lower the cost of fuel and stop a Chuck Norris Roundhouse Kick...now that's sayin something :offtopic:

  15. 50 brass, 8-4-5-6 battery, 11 pit, 15 guard, plus Honor guard, plus 2 interchanging members who take over spots playing and marching when another member switches instruments on the field for a featured part. Plus 1 DM, and 1 backfield conductor.

The backfield conductor that also fills Bari and Pit parts during the show. He's a Kiltie Utility Tool :worthy:
