  1. I've said it before.... I joined Sunrisers at age 18. It was the corps' veterans, the 20-and-30-somethings (and some older than that) who showed the younger folks, like myself, how to "get it done."

What bothers me is when I hear from people who have no idea what a senior/all-age corps is all about that those corps are corruptive influences on young people, that the "kids" are exposed to drinking, drugs, etc. (and yes, I have heard stuff like this first-hand.)

Of course, things like drinking, etc. never happen in junior corps. And if you believe that, I have some oceanfront property in New Mexico to sell you. B)

I firmly believe that an all-age corps with a mix of veterans and younger people is a very good thing.

In fact, I'm not sure that an all-age corps made up almost entirely of teenagers will ever win a DCA title. (NOT a knock on teens here....please don't misunderstand me.) I think that, to be successful from a competitive standpoint, an all-age corps NEEDS a fair share of older veterans (in their 20s and beyond) who know how to get the job done with a limited amount of rehearsal time.

That right there is FANTASTIC ^OO^ ! Couldn't agree more

  2. i saw it said elsewhere all the kids in DCA today dont have the talent to make DCI.

that's pure horse ####. Many of those kids DO have the talent. What they dont have is either the cash, the time, or in some cases, the desire to do DCI.

just because a kid is in a DCA corps doesnt mean they suck.

    Someone actually said that?

Well, I know this. There are 3 reasons in the Kilt snareline as to why that statement would be very wrong.

  3. I guess I'll get the ball rolling here.

I'm not sure I qualify, because I’m not sure if you are talking about members who skew younger, or members who are young enough to still have DCI eligibility.

I will be 23 when I step on the field for my second year with the Kilties. I have had an extraordinary experience. Not only have the people there been great, but I get to play beats written by the man who wrote a championship show (Chris Thompson). Learning from him is on the whole a great experience.

Not to mention I got to hear stories about guys like Mitch Markovich from people who marched when he did/taught. I played that guy's solos in High School, how cool is that. I think that on the whole the great thing about All Age Corps is that it is a place to keep legacies alive. It gives entertainers a chance to do what they do best for years to come, and that is to entertain. Ok I'm off topic, let me return.

In no way can I see anyone marching a year with any drum corps being a negative influence. Drum Corps at any level can only be seen as a positive activity and experience for everyone who gets involved.

    That’s my $3.50 (Tree Fiddy).

I'll get a little more detailed for ya.

Would a marching/staff members outside the corps social activities (legal or illegal) be considered a bad influence to younger members say the age of Junior Corps eligibility? Eventhough what he/she contributes to their corps is greatly appreciated and makes that corps and the younger members better people and musicians?

Maybe that helps clarify the initial post or maybe not.

My take is that whatever goes on with a member outside of the corps is theirs and in by no means has a negative influence on what I have learned, nor should it be considered a bad influence to younger members. I've learned a lot from everyone I have marched with at the Kilties. Every piece of advice, every story I am told from guys of all different "social backgrounds". No matter what those guys do outside of rehearsal they've been there and I haven't. I will listen to every word they have say cause it can only make me better. So now you know where I stand on the topic. Responses have been great, keep 'em coming. I would love to hear from some under 21 All-Age members out there.

  4. I got the idea for this topic from reading some previous discussions involving ages of members.

Does being in an All-Age Corps have a mostly positive or negative influence on the young members of our corps?

I know what the majority of the responses are going to be BUT I know there are people out there that are going to disagree with the masses.

I could make this a poll but responses involve so much more than just a yes or no answer. Plus I wanna hear what everyone really thinks about it.

    Lets discuss.

  5. From a percussion standpoint we couldn't have had a more productive first camp.

    Battery:

    7 snares (3 returning vets)

3 Tenors (All back from last year and looking for a fourth)

    5 basses (4 returning vets)

7 plates (yes that is no lie 7! I can't make that up)

We got through all our warm-ups (old and new) the new OTF (which is fan-freakin-tastic) and went upper left to lower right on the opener "Nelly Bly" with Front Ensemble and Horns.

More detailed reports are in the "Announcment Forums"

Join 2006 Kilties (especially if you play tenors)

  6. thanks for the props Doug this year is already a great one

    on another note ...

the hornline, drumline and guard was leaps ahead of where they were last year.. man some of this camp was better then most of my jr corps years

Drumline is going to be a whole different beast this year

the horn line is even stronger then last year

and from what I saw the whole gard was working on rifles and not looking bad at it at all ..

and visual hmm.. what can I say ..

well there going to be good ..

but there bodies are a bit sore right now!

I gotta echo the kudos to the visual program. Great job Butler! I can't wait to get it out on the field.

As far as percussion goes. Friggin A! In my honest opinion a great camp. We effeciently went through a huge chunk of our music. Running through selected warm-ups from last season, plus some great new pieces. Got through the entire opener WITH front ensemble and hornline. AND getting it to a point where we could get a little picky about stuff you don't normally get to at the first rehearsal.

A lot of veterans returning (4 out of 5 basses, all 3 tenors *cough* looking for a fourth *cough*) Snare line took the largest hit of non returning members. BUT the spots were filled by some very talented individuals. Three of which are something special and am really glad to see them straping on a drum with the mighty Kilts.

As a member of the battery I can't speak on the front ensembles behalf but from what I heard Sunday they are sounding great as well. (could use a few more numbers however)

    Hornline sounded great (as usual)

Guard looked great and appears to be working extremely hard.

Great Camp see you guys in January

    ^OO^

  7. ^0^ If I was a marching member, simliar to Shadow 7, why would I want to drive 7 hours to work at a beer fest? There should be enough local members to work it.

    "One Bourbon,One Scotch,One Beer"

    George Thorogood and the Destroyers

I was unfortunatly unable to attend this FINE event due to work. BUT my father did (and if you've seen him you can till he knows his beer). His quote "Unbelievable. This thing could get huge around here". The beer was great. All different varieties from all over. Co-Workers of mine also attended and said they had more fun at Brew Fest then they did at any of the summer festivals in the area (excluding Summerfest of course :P ).

Keep in mind though it being a lot larger undertaking then it appears it requires a lot of help. All the local members may not be enough either way.

From what I hear the fun didn't end at Festival Park either. Good times.

I'm gonna make sure I am around this time. Stupid work

  8. YES, Lots of new and young faces in the Kilties battery this year. We had 8 or 9 snares (2 of them didn't play at all though) @ open house and at least 2 more will be at the Dec Kamp. LOADS of talent. The whole cymbal line has returned and same with the pit (also 2 more pit hopefuls at next Kamp too). Keep your eye on the Kilties percussion section this year. You won't wanna miss a thing!!

    Best,

    Mr. Magoo

    Hey Chris...Wooooooooooooo!
