  1. The Scouts had an AMAZING SHOW that night in Murfreesboro!  The crowd loved it and bought it!  When announced in.....*forgot placement*....the crowd simply did not agree.

HAHA, that was awesome.  First the boos (disagreement) then the standing ovation lasting for an extensive amount of time!!!  Gotta love it!!

    The Scouts.....fan favorite!!!!!

Same thing happened in 2000 at Allentown. I was there.

  2. Why is it so disturbing?

I said that I find it surprising/disturbing. I find it more surprising than disturbing.

Anyway, you want to know why it bothers me at all? It's a bit like Madison without Scott Stewart, or Madison allowing girls. Wait . . .

The Scouts are in the thick of it right now and you're complaing about the fleur-de-lis not being used?

I'm not really sure what it means to be in the "thick" of it. If you're referring to scores, I certainly didn't care about them when I marched, and I don't care about them now. I'm much more concerned with whether or not they are entertaining. I'll know the answer to that question when I see them first-hand in Foxboro.

  4. bryce's dad, some of the things that had changed since i left the scouts initially bothered me, and seemed to make madison less like madison. but as the week progressed, i realized that even with all the changes, madison was still madison because:

    - they still had a powerful/exciting hornline (particularly powerful/exciting soprano's)

    - their show was still entertaining

    - they still had a lot of fun at rehearsal

    - they still did pranks on final's day

    - the "average fan" stilll thought they were placing too low

  5. joel spoke for me a number of times in his last 2 posts.

i found almost everything he said to be entirely accurate. thx, bro. B)

i got into a debate with a former madison scout that marched in the 70's on RAMD. when we finally agreed to disagree, he responded:

Yet, we're still part of the same family, just like Arnold and Maria :)

As you say, Madison is still, and will always be, Madison.

each madison alum comes away with a different perspective/philosophy/attitude. i don't think any of us walked away with a "dangerous" philosophy, however. i, for one, work on wall street, in arguably one of the most competitive environments that exist. i wouldn't worry about any of us "misguided" ex-scouts struggling to survive in the real world.

  6. The reason I have such an aversion to the competitive aspect of DCI is because I feel it takes the focus off the aspects of drum corps that really matter (entertaining the crowd, enjoying the performance) and places it on what doesn't (scoring). Too many people in this activity let the judges decide whether or not they had a good show or a strong season. Lines like, "I thought we had a great show tonight, but I guess we didn't because our score went down," do make me sick to my stomach. I went to high school that was very competitive in marching band. Each year we came so close to winning the state title (we always took 2nd or 3rd) and each year I was so disappointed that we didn't. I always felt that all of our hard work was for nothing, and that we "came up short". Really that was not what happened at all, but I was lead to believe that was what mattered. I believe that I was "mislead" then in my beliefs, not now. dmfootworks, I am in no way brainwashed, and am baffled that you think I am.

RobH, I agree that Scott was fighting a losing battle. Because of that, I can't say that some change wasn't warranted. If the Scouts aren't in finals, then there is no way that they can entertain.

In an ideal world things would go back to the way they were in the late 90's and they could focus solely on entertaining, yet finish in the top 6 regardless.
