Make that FIVE DCP members at the Erie show who didn't meet each other...
-
In the years I marched in Spirit of Atlanta, everyone in the percussion section (both battery and front ensemble) read music.
-
I wasn't there in 1986, but in 1983-1985 Spirit had a 3-stick toss. Is that what you're referring to? It was based on the standard "Anaheim toss", but with a 3rd stick held constant in the left hand.
Jack is correct, although I thought it was done in 84 and 85 with the third stick. I was unaware of 1983, but Jack marched that year so I'll have to take his word for it. My recollection is that the third stick was yellow, not blue.

Nikk:
So I hear from Jim Black that you should be able to answer your own question now. Enjoy your time in Athens. Go Dawgs!

What is this music supposed to be? Corpsreps does not seem to have useful information. I am pretty sure I heard some Star Trek soundtrack strains.
Teal's music is from a Finnish group called Rajaton (pronounced RA ya ton)

dci.org now has a scores page up for Open SemiFinals...but the postings are behind the score announcements inside the stadium at this point....

Doce, kaksi kymmenen, XII.....12!

Kind of funny.... real grass field, the center would be turning to dirt, yet on this new turf, the green gets darker.
It's all the little piece of black rubber that make up a good portion of the cushioning coming up to the surface. Get's all inside your shoes!

Congrats to 7th Regiment on their season. I have two students in the drum line, Christian T on snare and Matt C on #2 bass. Great job guys, very proud of you!

My favorite Spirit memory: playing all those after show concerts in 1986, winning the DCI Canada regional and the Drum Corps East title.
-
Those drums look cool. Who made them? They look like they would really project well. Why didn't that idea take off and change game, like the free-floating lug idea did?
Believe those were made by North Drums. I never played them, but the guys I know who did said that it was very difficult to hear yourself play and therefore to play clean together. Spirit as far as I know didn't use them in a show, only pre-season. But I could be wrong.
-
My favorite Spirit moment - Watching them blow the house down in 1983 Allentown prelims - Spirit was definitely back.
I too was surprised at 87 prelims. I was figuring Spirit would end up sixth in just ahead of madison, suncoast and us. I was shocked when they were slotted tenth.
Let's just say that we as a corps weren't very happy with the prelims and finals scores in 1987. Losing to corps we'd been beating handily all year was a bit too much to take. Politics? Likely. But I forgot, there's no such thing as politics in drum corps. Yeah.

Spirit was close to Cadets all year until the end. In fact, if you go back and compare scores for Spirit vs. the rest of the final Top 12, Spirit was sitting in 6th place until last two or three shows.
As a Spirit 87 member, I can tell you this: we didn't like "falling" from 6th to 10th in the last week of the season. Look as the spreads between Spirit and Cadets, Blue Devils SCV, Cavaliers and Phantom from Aug 1-11, then look at what happened to the spreads at Semi Finals and Finals.
We certainly didn't get 4 or 5 points worse in the last week of the season while everyone else went up.

It was 1987. As I recall, we performed, then one other corps (Star?), then they cancelled the rest of the show. The heat was brutal; the make-up on the guard girls' faces was melting.

Yes, it was 1987 at Decatur High School in Atlanta. As it was our home show, after the show was canceled, we (Spirit) went ahead and performed our show in exhibition. I believe we did it in uniform but without shakos, but we may have done it without the uniform jacket. That detail's a bit fuzzy now.

Is Johnny G (Grauer) still there? If so, tell him that Brian Hunt said hi. He was assistant director at Newtown my freshmen/sophomore years and absolutely hated me. I'm kind of glad he didn't take over when Jim Dumas left because I would've been blacklisted my junior/senior years. He's a good guy, though. His little cousin and I were in the same trombone section all four years. Fun stuff.
Yes, Jon Grauer is the Band Director at New Milford. I'm sure he didn't hate you, but the fact that you thought he did means he got into your head! Will tell him you said Hi.

Happy Birthday Michael!
I'll never forget the look on your face when you were interviewing Glen Carter, Benja Russell and I about the 1995 Atlanta Rhythm Machine as we were driving to compete at finals (not sure now how you got on our bus???) and we told you we'd only rehearsed for two weeks! I don't think you believed us!

I judged both Norwalk and Trumbull many times over the years in the EMBA circuit, pre-MAC, up through the 1994 season when I went on staff with a band here in NJ.
What school were you from, BTW?
Mike,
I'm a little late to this string, but thought I'd chime in here. Your name has always been familiar to me but I couldn't place it. Now I can! I marched in the drumline at Trumbull HS in 1982, 1983 and 1984 (when I graduated...THS was a 3 year high school at that time with 9th grade in Junior High and not allowed to participate in the marching band). Then after university and drum corps I ended up back in Connecticut and taught the drumline at Trumbull HS from 89-92, so I'm sure you and I met then! After 1992 I moved back to Georgia.
I have no idea what happened to EMBA and how MAC came to be...I'm just glad that there is a circuit and that MAC seems to be doing well.
So after moving around the US, to Europe, and then back to Connecticut, I'm teaching now the drumline at New Milford HS and competing against Trumbull and Norwalk. It's fun to see Pete and Carmen on competition days. I remember when Carmen was a freshman at THS...and now he's the assistant Director!

I know I'm biased, but Mike Back doesn't seem to get the recognition that he deserves! Just listen to Spirit from 1982 through 1990, especially 1985, and you'll be impressed by the writing, both the front ensemble and batterie.
All those other guys are OK too. :)

Speaking of throwing down....our 90 snareline was a bunch of alcoholics and #### clean. Just from my experience, we had some of the best hands in DCI that year.
BTW.....I can't get thrown off for calling my 90' line a bunch of alcoholics, can I? I was one of them.....
Pat,
Don't know if you'll get thrown off....but I might throw you under the bus! :P Just kidding.
-
wow - I didn't even realize that Spirit was scoring so well in the first part of the season. It must have been tough to end up in 10th that year!
You can say that again. Ending up 10th still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Really.

Vono. Her siter, Francie Ann also marched. Mom was "tea lady" Mrs. Vono on the food staff.
Don't know if it was because we were so thirsty or what, but I've never had iced tea taste so good. And she was always pushing the bananas too! What a fantastic lady she is....as are her daughters!

The hottest I have ever been was at the 1987 DCI South Prelims in Birmingham, Alabama.
After prelims, we went back to our school and the staff cancelled the afternoon rehearsal before Finals that night.
That day gave new meaning to "Ritual Fire Dance!!!"
Tony
By the way. The day after Birmingham, we were in Atlanta and they called the show off due to heat. We were in warm-up and the corps on the field had several kids pass out. I believe we did a standstill instead.
If my memory is correct, a Japanese corps / band was the first to go on that afternoon in Atlanta and had at least 5 kids fall out during the performance due to the heat. The show was cancelled and all corps did a stand-still, many in half uniform...except Spirit. We decided that it wasnt' too hot so we marched the show in uniform.

Yes, Dave. One of the draw backs of being on the end of a big snare line. Photographers never seem to zoom back far enough to get everyone in the picture <**>
Scott
78 Kingsmen Snare
actually made it in the picture
3rd from the right.
Is Randy Wickstrom the first snare on the left in the picture (with props to Dave who isn't in the picture)?

In 1985 Spirit had a female snare drummer, Paula (can't remember her last name!) who had come from Glassmen.
In 1989 & 1990, Spirit also had a female snare drummer, Susan Reinbold. She eventually married Glen (Turtle) Carter, who marched Tenors with Spirit from 1982-1985.

My name is Beau Rowell and I'm a Board member of Friends of Spirit, Inc., which operates the Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps.
With respect to housing for Cadets for the Hoschton, GA show, both Spirit and Cadets were caught off guard about the loss of Woodland HS as a housing site for the Cadets, only learning about it last night during the Valdosta, GA show. We are very thankful to the staff at Cairo High School, who made their facilities available at the last minute for Cadets. Further, we understand Cadet's decision to not attend the Hoschton show at Mill Creek HS due to the distances between Cairo HS and Mill Creek HS.
Here are the facts surrounding Woodland HS as a housing site for Cadets for the Hoschton show:
Securing housing sites is a big challenge for all DCI drum corps. Please know that the principal at Woodland High School is NOT the person to be blamed this situation. As you now know, the principal did not "back out" and in fact did all they could to try to make it work. From Woodland's perspective, they learned that Cadets would be arriving with only about six hours notice.
Hopefully you now understand this situation. We respectfully ask that you not bombard Principal Ellis and blame her for Woodland not being available for Cadets. Sending her derogatory letters will not help this situation, and in fact could be problematic long term for Spirit, which held spring training at Woodland. We've worked diligently at developing positive relationships with school districts in the greater Atlanta area. Let's please not undermine the foundations built by blaming the wrong person for this situation.
Thank you.
