  1. Just because i like SCV does not mean that i have anything against Phantom. A lot of what happened in 2009 had to do with the "honeymoon" of phantom winning in 2008.

If i remember correctly..... Phantom won percussion in 2008. In 2009 when they finished in 9th, their percussion finished in fifth. WHY!!! WHY!!! And even then, there music as a whole finished better than the Blue Stars and Boston. WHY!! WHY!! execution was why.

Now they are without shaw, without rennick. their percussion went from elite, to... 7th. the corps itself finished 5th. WHYY WHYYY

I'm not saying phantom is going to take a hit just because SCV now has rennick and shaw, and the bluecoats brass team. I'm saying it because i see SCV improving their design team, while i see Phantom's getting worse. Is it set in stone that phantom will drop, no. But unless you know something, everyone is expecting it. and this only a bad thing if all you care about is phantom winning. Regardless phantom will put out a great show, the kids gain a lot of experience, etc.

Once again, i don't hate Phantom, i don't dislike Phantom. I love a lot of their shows. will they have a great season? yes. Pretty much every corps has a great season, will they win? I would bet against that. will they drop in position? I would bet so. and that is the point.

With how you're putting it you know Regiment will drop, just saying. From what I know Paul and JD had many differences, so SCV might need to watch out what they're getting into. You never know how the season will go, but I wouldn't count out Don/Christian with the brass. They put up an amazing staff, so watch out.

  2. A statement which applies to every single corps.

Their percussion will be better than the all rookie line of last year.

Their drill although not to everyones taste will be just as good if not better. As 2011 showed, Jamey Thompson knows how to write to the Regiments strengths.

    Brass is the unknown...

Just wait until you see who's all on the brass staff then

  3. This is the thing folks...Michael Gaines has been a part of the Cavaliers Organization for 20+ years. He is a FMM, and inducted into DCI Hall Of Fame because of his work with the Cavaliers. I would hope if there ever comes a time for Michael to leave/retire from the Cavies, that he and/or organization would be given proper notice of his/their intent. I really dont think its in Michaels nature to just jump ship to another corps.

Besides, lets be honest here, there aren't very many corps out there who could execute his drill as consistently or at the level as the Cavies.

And for those, who say Santa Clara would be closer...Michael works with groups all over the country (ie Pride of Cincinnati), just not the Cavies. He was just in Thailand adjudicating.

And to the DCP poster who quotes Michaels bio from his web site. That is word for word on The Cavaliers website as well and has read that way all season long.

But, who knows? Ive been wrong before....and stranger things have happened

same thing could have been said about JD Shaw

  4. Story time: We (SCV 84) played Elsa's with Phantom at a picnic event during DATR. While we were learning it, Tim Salzman and Rick South were ADAMANT: "You will play full note values on the penultimate measure!" And we did. It felt awesome as our hornline filled in those awful gaps.

So it looks like SCV 84 didn't play what was on the page. Sounds like a classy group.(sarcasm)

I know in that measure it's an quarter note with an eighth rest written after it. There was a written gap for nothing to be played.

In all I do love Vanguard and I know they're are a very classy organization, just don't believe you should do that to another corps.

  5. Maybe I should clarify/restate my thoughts.

It's not that I hate the jazz running. It's just that, for the past four years, I have seen RANDOM members of the hornline elect to jazz run at a size that should be marched, especially considering the fact that everyone around them is marching normally.

To me, this is a mistake on the Emmerts' part. Somewhere along the way, a)the education these marchers got from the Emmerts told them it was okay to jazz run a particular set for little to no reason; b)the Emmerts just plain out told them to jazz run that set (eek); or c)the Emmerts never noticed this particular member at that particular set, and therefore it stayed for the rest of the season.

In any event, I find the blame to be on the teachers' part, not the students.

And, as such, I repeat--get rid of the Emmerts!

The Emmerts' have made that corps so much better visually than where they were and also about the "jazz running" small steps by Regiment that not a jazz run that's a jazz walk. Jazz runs start at a 5 to 5.

  6. Not saying they're not about winning, but it's also that show wasn't completely about winning a championship. Like so called rumors Crown's show maybe about. I also believe Crown wouldn't go out there and have a show just based on winning the DCI title, but I'm saying if they do I agree with Nick and will say it's corny.

  7. Yeah, winged victory was sooo tacky.

    Show was about birds

    also - 2005 - "couple #13 from california"

In 2005 BD was going for #12, so know the facts before you post that. Also, that show wasn't about winning either. All about a dance competition.

I personally think it's funny how people get offended if you have something bad to say about Crown, on here. They're a good corps, but they have flaws like every other corps. I personally think if their show is about winning the championship then it's pretty corny, but that's personal opinion.

  8. the two videos that were put up this morning have them going through the same section of music a few times. in between reps, there's silence but once they get going you can hear it pretty well. wow

    the music is killer!

where did you find the videos put up this morning?

    Thanks in advance.

  9. Just remembered this thread and decided to bring it back up again!

Bearing in mind that finals recordings and such have no been made available, has anyone's opinions on this phantastic mello section changed?

IMO the finals recording shows some over-hyping in places. I remember being there at finals and feeling the same way. It was the last show, and they got a little carried away in some places (namely, the big hit in the swing section). But I know better than to think that they're always like that.

Any thoughts/hopes for this section's future?

Thoughts, with JD's writing they're always going to be the best.
