  1. I think keeping Finals in Indy was supposed to be cost effective, but the West corps have to travel there every year. I think it does a disservice to the corps members not being able to perform at the best venues for Championship week. Imagine Finals in Austin, Dallas, Phoenix, Charlotte, Kansas City (again), or San Diego. I loved my experience in 2000 and 2001. There's so many cool venues to perform in to be stuck in the same place every year.

Plus, what happens when surrounding schools start saying no to housing corps every year?

  2. You are correct that you can't really say that SoA "beat" Cavies with these numbers. It's no apples-to-apples comparison. But I think the first few days of numbers DO clearly show that in 2012 Spirit of Atlanta is no longer in a battle to fight their way into finals. They are more likely going to be doing battle this season for a finish somewhere in the 10-8 range. And for this corps to even be having a discussion about their scores being in close proximity to Cavies, Madison, etc. is a HUGE thing for the organization. Alumni, family and those with SoA ties have every reason to be proud and psyched about what's happening in Atlanta.

You, my sir, have it correct. Just to be in the discussions with Cavies and Scouts is a treat. But, and I'm sure to organization would agree, as long as the fans come away with a great experience from SoA that's all that matters.

  3. Good question.

Another interesting question is when was the last time we compared scores with full panels and those with partial panels from shows as much as 3500 miles apart ? I know that some of us compared partial panel judging scores with full panel judging scores last June at this similar timeframe too. The first week of scores in June ( mix of partial and full panels judged shows ) had no relationship at all to what happened in spreads and placements at Finals last year with complete judging panels, (plus another percussion judge), but the small scoring spreads in June among Corps in positions 5-10 with different sized panels was a topic of interest nonetheless the first week of June last season too.

Ummm, yeah. Isn't that the whole point of this topic? To compare corps from different shows with different panels 3500 miles apart and then rank them? No one said this is how it'll be come Finals or heck even the first regional. The small scoring spreads are a topic every year esp. in June. Don't get too serious.

  4. Wow.

Has Spirit become the test bed for FJM's newest experiments? Last time it was the gradient fabric and now this. They're getting more and more radical each time. There's nothing really wrong with this, but it could be worn by anybody. When you have such a classic, distinctive and visually effective design as the uniforms with the big white delta, why not modernize, freshen, recolor, adjust and modify that rather than go off on such wild tangents?

Especially when their poster, theme this year is ALL about building a big delta?!

This new design is going to be worn by 35 hs bands in the next year, with the only change being a little embroidered tiger or similar in place of the "delta", which is looking a lot more like an A to me. Is it supposed to be an A for them moving back to Atlanta?

    Nice effort, but puzzling.

Actually, the delta IS the A in Atlanta. I like it. People say its looks good on the field. People like the show (for once). I've worn the dark blue/red/cream SOA uni and the baby blue uni. I was proud both times and the current members should be proud too.

  5. I think the main thing to ask is ......are the kids having fun? They are!!! So who cares about the scores?

Could Spirit have down things different with the show to sell it more? Yes.....but the design team decided to go in the show's current direction. Spirit seems like a young corps too, so maybe that has something to do with the design.

Would I like to see them play more? Hell yea!!! Cause when they do play it's pretty darn good.

We as fans have to remember this is a youth activity. Just enjoy the show!!!
