  1. Consider that with each passing generation, there seems to be a receding level of historical knowledge and perspective among Americans (generality of course); so the Presidential quotes are not necessarily re-treads for a bunch of younger viewers especially. That said, the Cadets are not doing a version of Cirque du Soleil on the field, so they have that to overcome at least :-)

You mean this year they are not - regardinf history - there have been rotating doors, rabbits that looked like a goats, boxes moving around the field to...move around the field, pink tables, street lamps - but you are correct - THis year they are not doing a version of Cirque. They have toned down the demand a bit and performers'individual responsibility. Not as athletic but really clean. Nothing wrong with clean just clean. If a group is that clean with the Cirque shows catching up - and cleaning up as well.......It's anyone's game. Exciting times!

  2. After seeing the bluecoats live in Lawrence, count me among those not experiencing them as the best thing since sliced bread. I find the music up until the ballad repetitive and a bit off-putting. The ballad, however, is lovely, my favorite part of the show. I do like the last number because it reminds me of Carolina Crown’s In.Trance.It from 2006. A lot of time is spent by the guard and horn line moving the triangles around, and this gets uninteresting to me pretty quickly. And the climbing up on and posing on the triangles in various configurations also gets repetitive to me. They are doing a great job in performing and they sound great, but I am not impacted as I have been by some other recent shows. Crown 2012 comes to mind.

And regarding the Hall of Presidents.......I feel the same way with regards to distractions. The Narration is really distracting at times. Is it needed - yes. Should the content be limited a bit - yes......as well as volume. The triangle movement is done seamless unless you are looking for it to be a distraction. When a Narrator is standing right center and up front and is loud and at times misses the cues for the music ....you can't miss. Both corps are playing well!! I love both shows a lot. It's just two different approaches. Add Crown into the mix and BD and you have the top 4 groups really giving the audience a lot.

Also to address the need for a message in the show by another poster - again messages do get in the way at times. Sometimes personal disagreement causes a dislike for some.

Cadets presidents show, for example, has a sampling toward the end and the current President is in that sampling...the vet sitting next to us at Lawrence said "and I now don't like it" .........drum corps is allowed to be about "just" the music. That is not old school just not so esoteric. Different approaches - different staffs - different likes. Doesn't make it bad or easier. I like all of the shows. The top 4 really could take it at Championships. But does it matter? We are really getting some great entertainment this summer!! In facts all of the corps this summer are really giving us GREAT shows!!

  3. oh come on - spill the beans - how did you see it?

    Since you asked - ha!

Comparing from the two shows - From Jackson into Lawrence (and a little of the Chambersberg show comparison)

    Crown 79.9

    Bluecoats 79.1 ( close )

    Cadets 78

For the top three - I truly see no change in Cadets as far as better performance and more responsibilities placed on the kids. Cadets are, as of this show, not the clear cleanest of the three. They are all at a similar level which now begins to expose the design intent.....

The Bluecoats really have the electronics figured out. Followed by Crown as well.

    Cadets narrator way too loud

At some point some will have to give up a caption to Blue and I think others would follow - GE caption and Brass ABD Percussion could go their way. Axiom was a bit down - when compared to the night before but still was strong enough for the event.

I have to say this - Bluecoats snare line - wow! Usually I say that about their Tenors over the years. The tenors are as good or are as better..... As are the basses - Snares this year - Wow! Total percussion package. But also their snare line was the only new that had NO phasing in their feet. Kind of a big deal this time of the wouldn't you think. When I hears fuzz I looked at feet..... For example when Cadets perc section re enters from side 2 (stage left) end snare feet fuzzed again. Three nights in a row. Fix it and that will much cleaner musically ! They weren't the only ones - Spirit battery Quads going to set up for their feature..... Same thing - not out of step but some fuzz. Fuzz can naw at confidence for a performer.

Can't wait for my next viewings on July 5 & 6

  4. After seeing the Bluecoats live last night in Jackson I am not convinced that this is a trend setting show. The show is good but not great. Everyone says that they need only one judge to give them the spread that they need to breakout of the pack. Name the judge that is going to do that.

No one is willing to predict which one of the top four will drop a place or two. My money says none.

This is going to be the best season ever for fans. So lets just enjoy all the corps.

Being honest - I've been to Disney and have been in the Hall of Presidents - it''s been done before as we'll with the same level of electronics. Just saying -

  5. Brass guy already putting the musicians over the book. Wheels are gonna fall off this train soon. They'll start floundering in the GE captions, as well, when they realize there is no depth to the design.

I am assuming you mean Cadets - then we are in agreement.

  6. Spirit much much better than last night. Brass intonation and overall focus was so much better. Loved the show. At times possible bass drums over excited on a couple of entrances. It looks like pit and battery ensembled together.

    Guard - wow

Overall much better transitions - and better communication with audience.

  7. I don't know about that. I just know that there is definitely still a critique, as a friend of mine who's on the road this summer was talking about having gone to critique. Either way, there is an opportunity for staff's to advocate and educate about their show.

there is a critique tonight!! At Chambersburg

  8. Now he ^ sees some of the things that concern me. The scores do so much talking. Personally, I think that 'coats comp scores should be higher, esp. GE. This would more reflect what all of us see. But until the judges see it...

The composition number should be higher. The membership at coats, in addition to body and a drill, are being asked to move props and manipulate the props. That IS supposed to be a part of the composition number. So the judges are basically saying that is not really demanding........ Or they are doing it so we'll it gives the illusion of not being difficult. Those are substantially strong and well built props that have kids jumping off of them, at times 4 players playing on them, quad players playing a feature while being moved..........and that is not reflected in the book. Sorry, it's kind of blatantly obvious and to not have that reflected in the comp number!?!..........mind boggling a bit. I think they make it look too easy ( big compliment this time of the year regarding the props). That is not easy to do while performing a musical book that could stand alone.

Is it harder to have one guy announce on a huge non moving object that blocks part of the drill or constantly move props through out the show, using them in every possible and from every angle possible.......if this was USBANDS a judge might question why the stage did not move.....

Like some said earlier - it will take one judge to call it like it is and I think the other judges will join in.Either way, this is my favorite show this year and I have seen BD, SCV, Cadets, Crown, BAC, Phantom and Bluecoats......definitely my favorite.

And my rant is over..see everyone at the show tomorrow. Summer !!!!!!
