  1. A well done Cadets show with narraton <**> amped singing <**> a lackluster drum feature <**> and a hornline that doesn't get to shine <**> .

    Thanks, but no thanks.

It is obvious that you have no musical intelligence. The Cadets hornline has a plethora of opportunities to shine. They are shining in almost every single moment they are playing. They have wonderful balance and blen, great versatility, a good dynamic range, and awesome virtuosity on their instruments. Also, the percussion line is one of the best in the world and is featured quite well.

Oh no! Some members of The Cadets said something and sang and it was made louder by an amp. Oh my God! That must make it a bad show. Certainly less enjoyable than Southwind.

  2. In your opinion.

Don't play this "in your opinion" game. By the activity's standard, the Cadets are doing creative and challenging things across the board, and doing them well. For someone not to respect that and call the show terrible is plain ignorance. I don't like country music, but when I see a good country music performance, I respect it. I don't call it terrible. I may not perfer it, but it is not terrible.

  3. I don't agree with this opinion. Last time I checked, corps are being very creative with the brass and visuals. The performances this year of just brass and visual will probably be at a higher level than 2000 or 2001. The addition of an amplified voice or instrument is nothing more than an added element. It's as simple as that. It is not creative to just include amplification, it is creative to do something cool with it.

On another note, I still don't see what the big deal with amplified voice is. For awhile, voice has beel allowed in shows. The only difference is that you use a neat thing called technology to let the audience hear something better. I agree that it should not be over-used, just as any other element in a show. However, in principle it is not a big deal.

  4. dont get pissy just bc he didnt like the cadets, your posting history give you away. if he didnt like it he didnt like it. hence why they call it an opinion.

Statements like The Cadets show was terrible, or "maybe Southwind was higher than The Cadets" show nothing more than poor insight. I've seen The Cadets, Phantom, and Southwind this year, and I know that it is completely ridiculous to say that Southwind's show was more enjoyable than Cadets or any other top Div. 1 corps for that matter. The review that the other user posted was not sincere, it was stupid.

  5. Ok, so, I just got back from the show... didn't stay for scores, sorry (had to escort and out of town friend home...) but, here were my impressions:

    1. I'm angered that, at what is technically one of Spirit's home shows, the Cadets were the corps doing the encore. That just seems wrong to me. I mean, we did the encore their last year. Whatever.

    2. Phantom is AMAZING. That's it. No really, 'nuff said.

    3. Spirit's show is a split for me. On one hand, what they play and how they play it is wonderful. The show is done well. However, for a 30th anniversery show, I can't be but a little irked that they didn't play Georgia. They did play Old Man River, so I'll give them back 1/4 a point. :P

    4. The Cadets. I'm just gonna say it, I thought the show was terrible. And it's not because the singing or the narration, which I didn't like, by the way, but the singing only bothered me slightly (about how much Crown did in '04) but the narration, as with any narration, has, does, and always will bother me. But I disliked the show because it was just... THE SAME. First, the uniforms were hideous... sorry, but they looked kind of neat with the reverse thing last year, but now it's some sort of cloud pattern on the back... not diggin' it. Second, WAY too many props... I mean it's ridiculous... every member of the corps minus the drumline (even the drum majors) carries something onto that field. It's mind-boggling. Anyway, most of the show's music is just kinda, blah, mostly because it's the back drop for narration (the tea party scene) or the singing. The drum solo, while I LOVE Cadet drum solos notably the tenors, seemed WAY too much like last years... just not as impressive as I was hoping. And finally, the ending was the same as last year, and while that is understood seeing as this was a sequel, just like last year, the ending was lacking. So all in all, not impressed.

So, in MY mind, my opinion, the group should look like this:

    Phantom Regiment

    Spirit

    The Cadets

    Southwind

    The Magic

    (Teal Sound)

Yes, I put Spirit above Cadets. Like I said, I was entertained much more by Phantom and Spirit... maybe even Southwind (their show was actually really good).

Thank you for your poor insight.

  6. I'm hoping someone here can help me. I'm curious about the Cadets vocals. At the beginning does someone sing "history repeating?" Also, I know the girl says "where are we" or something like that, but is there anything else that she says on top of that? Are there anymore vocals?

  7. uhhh... it has been all I can do to force myself to stay out of this thread and not bore you all to death with my theories and BS about

when I marched and why I don't like some of the stuff now and why I LOVE some of the stuff now yadda yadda yadda...

a few here have done a great job explaining far better than I could without me adding my well known smart alecky remarks, because I

don't care what anyone thinks of me. I get to participate here, and that's the way it is.

But this post is just dumb. Oh please not a bando guy... do tell us all... enlighten us with your superior knowledge... just where might

we find intelligent conversation about drum corps?? I mean, where is that super-secretive utopian place where all of you "enlightened"

know-it-alls go to have intelligent, meaningful conversations about corps...where no one expresses opinions...and all the OLD people

do not participate??? Please tell us of that super-secretive site, where you gotta have the secret "I'm a doof" handshake to get in and

everyone in there agree's on everything because it's all so intelligent...

    :worthy:

    yeah...sarcasm intended. But intentionally put...

    Flamethrowers off.

Chill out dude. To illustrate my point, check out some of the more recent threads that only end up bickering between users over pointless things. The first one that comes to mind is "madison's new show."

  8. I disagree with you on some things. Southwind's drill was not very good at all. It was very easy and yet it was still very dirty. Visually, the duality of the uniforms were not highlighted enough. There could have been more wow moments with this idea but the only thing they could think of was a corny little dance at the beginning and end of the show. I would also say that the mallet lines in the ballad are not where they should be at this point either. I found myself on the brink of laughing out loud last night as they fudged their way through them. They will not contend for a finals spot.

The Bluecoats were the cleanest at Toledo, especially visually. For those of you who are interested, yes, the soprano soloist who frequently messes up has returned. Also, there is a lot of hand holding in this show. Musically, it is the same old Bluecoats. I liked the steel drums too.

Phantom's show is a beast musically and visually, and it is far more difficult than the Bluecoats' show. Phantom will have no trouble staying ahead of the Bluecoats this season.

Cavies will contend at the top. Very cool show.

  9. For those of you who haven't seen the 2006 Glassmen yet (and probably won't for a long time unless you live in Europe), their closer is centered around "Ode To Joy". At one point the whole ensemble is playing it, then somewhere in the middle of the 3rd phrase everyone starts dropping out, and they're marching around to silent drill. Even the drummers are "air drumming". During the clinic before the show yesterday in Toledo, Brian Hickman explained that this was to represent Beethoven going deaf, although he could still hear the music in his head and see what the musicians were doing.

I feel like the DM should turn around and conduct the crowd as if asking them to sing along, 'cause everyone knows "Ode To Joy"! Well, not everyone knows the words, but that's OK, we'll sing without words, like soccer fans. Maybe the soccer fans they perform for in Europe will do it!

Oh, and speaking of european Glassmen fans... Who is that guy who was like at every single one of their shows for the past 5 years or so, waving a British flag and whistling before they started their show? And he wasn't there last night at Toledo. Who is he? Support staff? Why wasn't here there last night? Is he waiting for them in Europe?

I think this would ruin the effect.

  10. The big prop they used last year looked like it was put together by a less-than-skilled junior high shop class. Sorry, big props that are shoddily built or poorly finished don't look good, they look...well...shoddy and poorly finished.

I thought the appearance of the door was just fine. It was well done in my opinion.
