  1. Tie breakers, as I understand it, were for First Place ONLY and are no longer in effect. We don't know if there's a tie breaker for 12th, but there was at least one tie for 17th in the past when that was the Semis cut off and both corps performed on Friday.

Odds of a tie when we go to the ten-thousandth of a point are minimal, I'll believe it when I see it. Instead, hopefully DCI will LET US SEE THE NON-FINALIST SHOWS AFTER THE SEASON and it won't matter in the long run.

  2. Agreed.

I've resigned myself to the fight for 13th (Academy is SO. GOOD.) but that's not a failure. The corps went for it again this year and it will pay off. Until then enjoy the rest of the summer and we'll be there cheering (and crying) in Indy.

(And even if they're in 13th they'll still have knocked off a Finalist corps. If Academy wasn't so amazing we'd be talking about the Troop/BAC fight. Instead they'll both perform and I have to believe that Troop will get their usual Semis GE jump.)

  3. I re-watched Thursday's performance and the corps appears to have taken a major leap forward since Minneapolis. Once I stopped viewing the show through the moment-by-moment "please do well" alumni honk lens I could see a confidence and fluidity that I haven't seen from Troop in many years.

There's a lot work to do: The third movement still needs more GE, the second movement is getting close, I expect to see the real ending by Atlanta, etc. Right now I'm slotting Academy into Finals but this show has a chance if Troop can keep pushing between now and Indy.

  4. Boston and Academy go head 3 times over the next week. San Antonio ( tomorrow ), Wed. in Arkansas, and next Saturday in Atlanta. Then again in Quarters, Semi finals in Indy. By Championships, nobody remembers what the draws were for all these Corps at the first regional each year. Thats because by DCI Championships, the draws really don't mean a hill of beans, if it was a good draw or a bad draw. Off the top of my head, I couldn't tell you ( for one example ), if the Troopers got a " good draw " or a " bad draw " for this San Antonio, 1st regional last season... nor any other Corps for that matter. But I do know who finished where.

Those shows don't count for Prelims, only San Antonio, Atlanta, and Allentown count. If Academy can't take 12th tomorrow then it's going to be difficult to go on in 12th on Thursday in Indy. They can still be the favorites for the last spot in Finals but if things are close going into Indy then every little bit helps. (#BACgate)

  5. I had a chance to watch Troop right before switching over to Academy and Academy has GE for days. I think Troop has the harder drill by a long shot but that doesn't matter if it's not clean and the show isn't as well constructed.

Academy's show just WORKS, and if Boston makes finals I may have to break something.

  6. Last night, I don't know about the timing; it probably doesn't matter. At regionals and championships, judging starts when the T&P judge waves his hand around in a circular motion--and she does that when a corps staff person tells her to do so. So yes, it's entirely up to the corps, and has nothing to do with the salute or announcement.

I was surprised that there was no "Presenting their 2016 show, 'The Great Event' . . ." announcement.

You can also tell the start of the scored portion of the show when the field judges walk onto the field/lift their recorders and begin to speak.

  7. Nice thought, but no. You don't add a sunburst late in the season. It takes a complete season to get it right. Troop has never thrown one in at the final hour. There's a first time for everything, but the show they have now is enough of a visual beast to keep their complete attention right through August.

Maybe not final hour, but Troop added a burst-like effect in the last month in 2009...

  8. The main problem I see is that, with the exception of the DM uniform, I would not have known it was the Troopers unless told so..

I will withhold further comment until Granny Smith weighs in.

If you had seen them live you wouldn't have had a question, don't blame the uniforms on poor resolution issues.

  9. I already know I'm going to lose it during Fix You in August.

The rest of the show looks good, but obviously there's a lot to add and adjust to make the show concept work. They're still miles better than any version of Troop I've seen in recent memory at this time of the year.
