  1. I heard the same thing. I must say I find leadership of some of the big boys in the activity more focused on stroking their own egos that looking out for the good of the activity. These types of moves are short sighted.

Would I stop supporting these 7 corps? Hell yeah! If this proves to be true, I won't attend shows sponsored by these 7 corps. I won't buy buy their souvies. When they take the field, I'll head to the concession stands and souvie booths for the other corps at the show. I'll encourge the kids I teach to look into marching with the other corps. If they are dumb enough to think they don't need the rest of the corps, do we need them?

    Strongly agree!

  2. I had not been to a show in maybe 20 years until I went to a 2005 show. I was surprised that they had amps at all, since I had been out of the loop for so long. The only corps that had a tasteful level of amplification that night was Madison. Everyone else was way too loud. It left a bad taste in my mouth that I just can't get rid of. I don't think electronics have a place in drum corps. Obviously, nobody asked me. :plain: I love this activity so much that I still go to shows when I can, I donate annually to my two favorite corps, and just try to grin and bear it when the amps are to loud or when the stupid synthesizers kick in. I'm afraid electronics are here to stay unfortunately.

<open pontification> I really think amplifying the pits is OK, because it enables the pit to play with a more "concert" sound, but beyond that, not a fan. I'm one for thinking that it's ok for BOA and DCI to be different. </end>

  3. Not really a countdown is it? DCI has killed yet another fun event. One less event for me this summer.

Maybe it's just me, but it strikes me as a "countdown" for the summer. Coming to theaters around the time that corps are either having their last camp or getting ready for move-in, it's a nice prep to signal the long winter, devoid of drum corps performances is coming to an end, and we're "counting down" the days until the first show.

But that could just be me. I'm a fan.

  4. My .02? It won't make a difference. But shame on any of you for finding fault here, only because what it says to me is that DCI is making an effort to listen to and respond to the fans' concerns, which should be appreciated.

They're doing what many have asked, begged, demanded. Give them just a little bit of credit, please!

    Or don't. Your call.

But when you incessantly complain about one scenario, and then complain about the opposite, your argument loses credence and you just seem like a complainer.

  5. I can't believe no one has suggested this yet; this thought came to me last night when I was watching Evgeni Plushenko's short program. Wouldn't it be interesting if he took his minute of warmup time before the music started to do some flips and other flashy tricks that aren't allowed...just to win over the crowd. And then do his required elements.

    Sound familiar? :-)

  6. Anyone remember which year Bobby Knight made his comments about the endurance and athletic ability of MMs?

Also, does anyone remember other vignettes that display the athletic ability of MMs? I've already got the cardio test of the Star quad player and John Hord's Gulf War/Bluecoats piece. Can you think of any others that might be on the Legacy collection?

I'm putting together a piece on the physical demands and could use the input.

    Thanks!

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the Gulf War/Bluecoats piece?

    Thanks!

  7. Call me old fashioned, but I honestly just have to disagree with this idea. I for one feel like the military-style unis are part of what make the activity what it is, both in marching band and drum corps, and it just wouldn't be the same without them.

I'm just a fan of the more military side of the marching arts (DM salutes, unis, marching, etc.) and I have been rather disappointed that some of these aspects have been disappearing over the years.

Strongly agree. What I don't understand, and with all due respect to Mr. Becker, is why folks feel like we have to "evolve" past the military roots. Showing some form of tradition does not mean you are backwards, or anti-progress.

  8. Space chords can also help teach how to tune a dissonant chord. We are used to hearing major triads and open fifths, but you can tune dissonance, too.

Donny is right--that it's incredibly easy to play them not well, but just like controlling soft dynamics can help you play louder dynamics, controlling dissonance can help with consonance.

It also sounds pretty #### cool.

  9. Alright, then. But what business do you know of that is based on an unsustainably travel-intensive touring model, where obtaining a voice in the running of said business is contingent upon mandatory annual participation in that tour?

    Audiodb,

I think craiga was just saying that we might look through glasses that are a bit too rose-colored sometimes when lamenting the loss of ### corps. Based on your rebuttal(s), I'd bet you two pretty much agree that the fault is somewhere in the middle.

One thing though; Jersey Surf, Academy, and a handful of the CA World Class corps do not participate in the full tour and they have an equal voice to any corps in the top 12, according to the current DCI by-laws. If you were referencing the past DCI structure, then you are correct.

  10. sorry ,

    thank you but.

    ooouuucccchhhhhhh.........

Thanks for peeing in the Cheerios. You're right, there are a couple bad attacks, and some intonation issues--good for you for pointing that out. I'd put it in 9th place of all the Christmas tunes corps released this week.

I bet you're the guy who criticizes stick heights on June 19th too, eh?

Now we know how you feel. I think it's great that a corps did something for the fans, and in the spirit of the season. I will listen to it again, and enjoy it.

    Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks Boston!
