  1. Imagine that the DCI broadcast was still on ESPN (yeah I know, it's impossible to imagine, but give it a try). What would Sportscenter commercials be like if drum corps were in them? Sportscenter commercials have featured famous pro atheletes and coaches and furry mascots roaming the halls, fixing copy machines, eating in the cafeteria, and editing reports.

My Sportscenter commercial would be this: Scott Van Pelt coming over to Stuart Scott (both Sportscenter anchors) with a paper he needs to sign. Scott reaches for a pen but realises that he doesn't have a pen. He asks Scott for a pen, he doesn't have one. Right then the Phantom Regiment drum major walks by, and Stuart says "Hey bro, you have a pen I could borrow?" the Phantom Regiment drum major stops, and then VERY SLOWLY pulls a ball point pen from behind his back, attached to his sash, the way his baton normally is. He gives Stuart the pen, they both thank him, and everyone continues about their business.

    Any other ideas?

Dude--that's actually pretty spot on. I like it. I'm not original enough to come up with one of my own...

  2. I think you misunderstand the purpose of the annual meeting. PM me if you'd like clarification.

    Thanks.

    Gregg Auby

Vice President, MDBCA Board of Directors

OUch! Man, when will us DCPers learn that we don't have all the answers. Jeff Fiedler calling some other dude out in another thread--Chris addressing rumor mills in Madison threads. Maybe we should not talk out of our rears. I like this trend...

  3. Because they are like almost every other World Class drum corps: they attract kids from all over the country, probably a handful of international members as well, and the major administrative operations are still out of their "home" location. And they still ooze "Boston" swagger and attitude, and I love it.

Basically, if you look at the numbers for a lot of corps, you'd have to say something like this to announce them:

From Casper, Wyoming, but also from New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Texas, Michigan, the Carolinas, Louisiana.... heck, all over the country and even from Japan.... the TROOPERS!

Terri gets it! Because Terri's team is going through a similar renaissance. Good observation Terri. From what I've learned, Boston's DM is from Seattle, Guard Captains are from FL and Canada, Horn Sergeant is from CO, and home office, BOD, corps director, both principal designers are in MA. Plot those points on a map.

Anyway, artists in residence sounds kind of cool, if not a little pretentious.

  4. The scores I have no problem with, I know those things can be off.

The spreads though, they just boggle me.

I've asked this before...but isn't that what we want? What if the judges are just calling it like they see it on any given night? Unless it's at the expense of our team, wouldn't you prefer to not know who's going to win finals night on June 19?

  5. With the 3-way tie tonight in VA, I thought I would remind everyone of the rule change that slid by this past January:

The directors of all world class corps unanimously voted to return to the possibility of a tie for first place. In the past few years, if there was a numeric tie, ordinals would determine the actual winner.

I just want to note that this is not a DCI conspiracy--the directors of each corps that you love and support decided that it would be ok to have a tie, and honestly, I don't see why they're so bad. It's not like it's an "everybody gets a gold star" situation...there are a heck of a lot of subcaptions, and the chance of a tie is fairly slim, but if it happens, why is it such a bad thing? I know some of you have lived through those ties.

I guess my real point is I don't get why we bash the judges or "DCI" when there is a tie. Your own corps are the ones who say it's ok.

    Peace.

Edited for link to DCI news article about the rule change:

  6. You may or may not find it toward the end of a clips vid of that year

I hate to be a stooge, but you know where you can watch all those shows? The DCI Fan Network. I've got a subscription, and every time I read these "favorite" threads, I can just zip over there and watch the show...it's pretty cool, you've got to admit.

DCI, where's my referral fee?

  7. Don't see why not. Unless it's more serious than what they are telling us. This stuff happens all the time and it even mentions they are leaving after they "rehearse" tonight. If they truly want to get rid of the "cold virus" and not have it spread then they would take at least a week off. It will take at least a week or longer for the bug to even leave the system in most cases. So are they pulling out of all the shows this week?

I'd venture to say you can still rehearse with 25-30 blanks, but not perform. It's also easier to buy a day's rest/quaratine for those kids if they're not trying to squeeze in a show, too.

    Good call.

  8. Um...is this a trick question?

Lets see, how would I feel if my kid got a ring? (and was part of one of the greatest shows ever).

I'm not sure, but I think I would be pretty #### proud.

"and is having trouble staying in the top 5"

Oh my god...do you KNOW how many kids would love to be in the top five...six...or seven?

Phantom is going to take their licks like every other corps. I have yet to see a corps on this

forum that hasn't taken a beating at one time or another...some on a daily basis.

I'm thinking those phantom kids are going to be fine. They are very talented and I'm sure

they will be "OK" regardless of where they end up...

    wow.

    Cali.

Cali--you're the one who started the thread...you shouldn't be surprised if things get hot in here.

A couple things are in play here; it's funny how we look at the previous year's champ and expect that we're looking at the same corps, when in reality, it's a completely different group of kids...same with Boston. It's not that Boston is miraculously good this year or that Phantom sucks--we're just looking at corps from opposite ends of the top 12 meeting in the middle. I feel bad for Phantom, only because last year's show was so breathtaking, I couldn't possibly imagine a sequel as exciting. What's cool is what we all whine about *not* happening, seems to be happening, that is that corps this year seem to be getting judged on what they are putting on the field, not what they put on the field last year, which is what should happen, right? This is just the most extreme example available at the moment.

I like the fact that GMen, Boston, Stars *and* Phantom can all win a caption on the same night--that's cool, and a decent argument against slotting, in my opinion.

Boston vs. Phantom though? We'll see. For those that don't remember, check the finals scores from the early 2000s...it's happened before.

  9. Corps pick their touring schedules, not DCI. If you have to be in a certain show, i.e. Cadets in Jackson, (or perhaps Crown in SC) it leaves you little option as to which tour you go on. Most corps will not pick shows with more than 7 hours between them...the way DCI sets up the tour leads each corps in a specific direction, with not much options for going back and forth between the east and the midwest.

    Hope that helps.

  10. The color guard is playing the tuba's valves during the feature too!

Holy cow--who judges that? The guard judge, or the brass judge?

edit: Just watched the Beverly show on FN. The crummy low box view actually gives you a great shot of the tuba/guard feature...wow.

  11. yeah.. you can say end of story all you want. But who has the head to head victory this year, boston or blue stars?

LOL. Alex, you marched BS, Jay marched Boston, obviously you guys are gonna root for your teams. You are right BS did beat BAC by 3 tenths head to head, which is pretty negligible, but still a victory. I think they see each other a few times this week...we'll have a better idea soon enough!

Historically (recent) I think Bluecoats have the edge, but we'll see when they all get together.

  12. Ill bite

Last season the Bushwackers had our 30ft trailer stolen with EVERYTHING in it. Total loss except for the uniforms.

Smartly we had EVERYTHING in it insured except for a few items like flagpoles and other misc equipment like generators, tools, etc and we recieved a check within 3 weeks from our Insurance company for the total amount to replace all insured equipment, Over $70,000.00

This season we have a new blanket insurance policy that covers EVERY bit of euipment we own plus the new 40ft trailer, Roughly $148,000 worth of equipment.

Our premium is a little over $330 a month for this policy.

This stuff is not rocket science, Though I feel bad for Academy, They need to get up to speed on their insurance needs.

    Jay

    Director

    Bushwackers

By the way-Tom Maiello of the Raiders and a Bush alum is our new insurance man, He did a wonderful job getting our insurance policy.

Jay--that's awesome! I wonder if all the corps know about that! Sounds like a good deal. Thank you for eloquently refuting my statement with facts, as I requested--I appreciate it.

How about that? A polite interaction where one party learned something from the other...yay!

    seriously...thanks, that's good to know.

  13. I've got to chime in here.

1)I presume a trailer needs to have insurance to be on the road. Are any of you aware that most vehicles don't carry "theft" insurance? The trailer won't magically be replaced if there is insurance on it. That's not how insurance works.

2)Does anybody know what it costs to have insurance on an ATV? I'd love for someone in the insurance business to chime in. I'd wager the cost of getting a title from the registry and plates and insurance (for what is technically a recreational vehicle and doesn't require any of those things) is probably near the cost of the vehicle itself every three years or so. The monthly premiums for insurance coverage that you know-it-alls are asking for on a $5000 vehicle probably equal about $5000 every three years. (That's about $140/month...does anybody pay that?) Perhaps the administration figured they would save money by not purchasing the insurance if they were not required to do so. I don't know many ATV riders that carry the same coverage, plates, etc on their ATV that they have on their family sedans....do you?

Please eloquently refute my statement and support it with facts if you can.
