  1. Heh, you should have seen Center Grove in 1998, they covered nearly the entire field in a grid, black background with yellow lines forming 5x5 boxes. Seemed pretty smart to me, since then they could guide to both vertical and horizontal yardlines

I was at BOA grand nationals in 2000, and I saw them do that exact same thing. Maybe that's the year you are referring to? Anyhow, they were very efficient at rolling it out and it certainly put the icing on the cake.

  2. I saw a picture in the DII/III forum, and it reminded me of something that's always bothered me:

Why are we still performing on bright white yardlines and green "floors"??

Would it be possible to create a floor that would let grasses breathe and wouldn't cause injuries, yet still be affordable?

    Imagine WGI without floors....

Now imagine the corps in DCI performing their shows on custom "outdoor" floors. Forget electronics and woodwinds. The next big innovation needs to be the stage on which we perform.

I've seen BOA bands roll out floors before, and I'm sure drum corps could figure out the logistics of it all.

Argghhhh, at the very least we could soften the yardlines to make them less visible, yet still functionable (see below).

  3. I've only been to a couple of shows and seen a handful of corps this year but it seems that there aren't many horn solos anymore. For crying out loud when I marched it seemed like half of our show was horn solos or duets or sextets, etc. I don't even think Jeff Wilt marched during the show, he just stood at the front of the field and moved from one side to the other to play solos!! Just kidding Jeff, I'm pretty sure you marched at least some of the time. :P Anywho, am I just imagining this or is this the trend these days with the "themed" shows?

Maybe solo's are programmed in based on a combination of show concept and talent available. What would be the point of writing in a killer solo if you don't have a kid with the chops to play it? That being said, I was definitely disappointed Blue Devils didnt have a solo/duet in Pegasus somewhere!

  5. I believe that BD put the stripes on their unis last year because it signified the whole puppet on a string thing. If they wanted to go for pinstripes, it would have made sense to just keep the pants/unis from 04-05.

I don't know why they kept them on this year.

    ~>conner

Good point, Conner. I thought the same thing too about the pinstripes, but then I thought they might be going for a more macro effect with the single, thicker stripe (since skinny, multi stripes are not readable from afar).

I remember reading somewhere before they unveiled that uniform design that they had been working on the concept for a few years. Never saw any comments on Blueview or in forums explaining it. Maybe they just thought it looked cool? Who knows, but it's grown on me.

  6. Haha. Good call. Don't forget Barbara Maroney(sp?), the '83 and '84 Cadets mello soloist. She's without a doubt the hottest one-armed girl I've ever seen. (No sarcasm involved. I idolize her.)

Ooh, Barbara Maroney! She was definitely a cutie. Anyhow, I hope the aforementioned women ended up with Horn players for husbands. Horn guys pay the bills, Drummers drum 'til they're broke.

  7. I don't think you all could be anymore off topic...

    ~>conner

You're right, this topic has officially jumped-the-shark. But hey, at least it keeps us off the street and away from gang violence.

Seriously, back to the topic at hand. Uniforms....

Did Blue Devils ever explain why they put those white stripes on their uniform? At first I thought it was an idiomatic effect having to do with Godfather (pinstripes), but now I see it as more of a "stutter" effect created by the assymetry. This is similar to Broken Arrow's uniform design in which the white part of their uniform creates uneveness in their motion (from far away).

    Thoughts?

  8. I'm thinking that Furher Bradley is the real Drum Major

Nah, hottie drum major chick wins out as DM. You want an old man's junk in your face all summer?

And what about Major Armstrong? I'm not sure I see his personality as a Contra.

The Contras I knew were a gritty bunch of guys. Besides, this guys name is Louis Armstrong! He's gotta play a horn.

The old lady in the background looks like she can bake a mean cookie!
