  9. The Buglers Hall of Fame Class of 2007

    By Andy Lisko

The Buglers Hall of Fame inductees, for the Class of 2007, were recently released by the nominations committee. Frank Dorittie, the committee’s chairman, and a member of the inaugural BHOF class, said this year’s list (below), displays the fraternity’s dedication to honor those individuals who’s playing and teaching abilities help to mold the activity for all.

They will be honored this year at the 2007 Barnum Festival in Bridgeport, CT on June 30th – a venue, which has become a home to showcase the talents of these virtuosos. This year’s Champions on Parade returns to the status of a DCA competition and as an added bonus the HOF inductees will be playing some selections arranged by the fabled Hy Dreitzer along with the St. Rita’s Brassmen Alumni Corps.

When notified of his induction, David Martin, of Upstate NY fame chanted, “I am humbled to be amongst so many of my boyhood idols … “, while Jari Villanueava, considered the country’s foremost authority on U.S. military bugle calls, said that he is “… looking forward to the big weekend”.

Somehow, a buglers’ gathering would seem incomplete without the sweet sound of Bobby BellaRosa’s French Horn. He might even take time from his playing to sell you a copy of Eastern Review where you could read the history of Dave Negri’s playing and teaching accomplishments.

The BHOF members realized that its roster would never be complete without honoring some of the greatest legends of their craft that have passed on. This year’s inductees include four giants of bugling: Don Angelica, Louis Armstrong, Hy Dreitzer and Pepe Notaro. Each and every BHOF member in awe of the dedication and impact these gifted individuals had on inspiring so many young players while honing their talents.

The 2007 Barnum Festival once again once again offers drum corps at its finest. An exhibition of superb talent with only one purpose in mind – entertainment!

Be sure to mark down June 30th on you calendar to be a part of this extravaganza. You do not want to miss it!

Here’s the complete list for the Buglers Hall of Fame Class of 2007:

    Name Affiliation

    •Louis Armstrong Famed trumpet entertainer

•Bob BellaRosa Holy Name Cadets, Skyliners, Hawthorne

  10. BHOF I&E SHOW HITS THE MARK!

(By Andy “your friendly BHOF I&E Show MC” Lisko)

Bridgeport, CT, March 19, 2007/BHOF/ The Buglers Hall of Fame sponsored their inaugural North American Championship for Individual and Ensemble Brass and Percussion, on Saturday, March 17 in Bridgeport, CT at the University of Bridgeport Student Center.

Back in the 60’s and 70’s, when drum corps was more of a year round activity, I&E shows were a standard late winter, early spring fare. Many attendees were glad to see some old traditions making a re-appearance, such as the single stage for all contestant categories, allowing the fans to see the entire show. The venue may not have been a vintage AL or VFW hall, which played host so many these style shows but, the “buzz” and camaraderie exhibited by the competitors and audience was drum corps fraternity at its best.

The BHOF charter is not only to honor the activity’s great players and contributors of the past but, to continue and preserve the art of bugle playing by offering shows which provide the opportunity for buglers to develop their skills and demonstrate them in a public forum. To this end BHOF member such as Frank Dorritie conducted a brass clinic prior to the competition, while Ritchee Price and Ruben Ariola memorized the crowd with a stunning exhibition of their talent.

But, the day was not about the BHOF – rather, it was about the participants who came out to show their wares on stage. Despite horrible traveling conditions, drum corps faithful from NH, MA, PA, NY and NJ made their way to CT to be a part of what will certainly be a classic, annual event.

And the event was not solely about individual buglers hoping to make their mark. It was about percussion, ensemble and mini-corps gathering together in a friendly, relaxed competitive atmosphere. The emphasis was definitely on entertainment and the fans in the seats were not disappointed.

Participants included members from Fusion Core, Park City Pride, Selden Cadets Alumni, Smithtown Freelancers, CT Hurricanes, Sunrisers, NY Skyliners Alumni, St. Kevin’s Alumni, CT Alumni, Capital Brass, Mass Brass, Amoskeag Sound, Manchester Muchachos and St. Rita’s Brassmen.

Awards were presented for Gold, Silver and Bronze in all categories including a dazzling mini-corps competition, which saw Mass Brass top Capital Brass and Amoskeag Sound in the year’s first MCA clash. The festive event was capped off by a wee received performance of the St. Rita’s Brassmen Alumni Corps.

All in all, this was definitely a “back to the future” day for I&E competitions … solid competition, healthy bantering, spectacular exhibitions and a tremendous post-show party … drum corps at its best!

One can only imagine what the future holds for future BHOF I&E shows.

We look forward to seeing everyone next year!!

  11. Problem is: we already entered our Brass Ensemble in the competition.

As I understand it, a quartet would be in the same category. And we would be using 4 of the same players.

That wouldn't be allowed would it? Players entering a judged category more than once?

Wouldn't it work that way at DCA as well? Only one entry (in an instrumental category) per player? I'll have to ask Dick Pronti about that.

There is no logical reason to not allow it.

    So we will !!

All of your ensemble players may also enter individual categorys too!

  12. Yeah, too bad we didn't get the quartet out there.

"Everyday, I Have the Blues" - would have been fun!

We arranged this just for Brooklyn, since they had a quartet category.

At Bridgeport, a quartet gets bumped up into the brass ensemble group.

Maybe we'll find another opportunity to do it.

    Tom,

We would love to hear your quartet in Bridgeport.

Have your guys send in one more entry form. You can get one here:

    Buglers Hall of Fame

It would also be nice to hear some some Fusion corps entries!
