  1. Cant wait to see the show.

I'm stoked to see field show debut tomorrow night (6/25) at Historic

Horlick Field in Racine. The Mighty Kilties are doing the half time

show at the Racine Raiders semi-pro football game. The crowds are always

big (usually around 2000 fans) when the Kilties are playing at halftime,

and the local football fans REALLY give it up for the Mighty Kilties.

The game's at 7PM and half time is usually around 8:15 PM.

    Go Kilties!

    WWBD!!!

  2.

Certainly hope you can come up to the 'Cities' for the SSP / St. Peter weekend. Otherwise, I can run you over in the Racine show..

    Coming to DCA my friend?

    Pat

    Hi Pat,

I have a work trip to China planned that will force me to miss the 'sota swing. Maybe I'll run into Smoothy.

    I'm planning on Rochacha.

  3. Thank you for you thoughts.

The corps just completed another full corps camp weekend; and we're about 16 to 20 charts from finishing the show, which we'll do the Saturday portion of next weekend's camp.

Have a couple openings yet to fill; one snare or one tenor, and one bari or one contra.

First "uniformed" public appearence of the season next Monday for the Racine Memorial Day parade, then off for a weekend.

On Saturday, I got to watch the full corps perform the first 2 movements of the show and it was AWESOME.

The opener was outstanding and MacArthur Park is going to blow people away!! Get your babies ready to be thrown!

  4. The corps always made a point of half-stepping past his daughter's (Barb) home on the (Main Street) 4th Fest parade route in Racine and play "Auld Lang Syne" marching by as Emil sat on the porch. In 2009, Emil's DCI HOF induction year, (against parade rules) the corps just stopped, turned towards Emil sitting on the porch, arched up in a concert formation and played Auld Lang Syne and Scotland the Brave as a tribute.....sometimes rules just have to be broken!

That was awesome. I was so proud to stop and play for Emil. And I'll never forget his 90th birthday party at Georges Bar. What a wonderful and fitting tribute for the Big E.

I will be proud to stand with the Kiltie honor guard this evening at Emil's wake.

    RIP Emil.

  5. Jim "Stapes" Stapleman, a giant in Racine drum corps passed away on Tuesday April 1.

He was only 62, succumbing to heart disease which he battled for many years.

Jim marched with the great Racine Explorer Scouts Drum Corps of the 60s, aging

out in 1969. He was the "screech" soloist for the corps for many years. His

chops are legendary around these parts. In 1970, Jim became the screecher for

The Boys of '76 Drum and Bugle Corps. Jim was involved with '76 until they

went inactive after the '84 season. In addition to marching, Jim was on staff

and taught many buglers for a number of other drum and bugle corps in Wisconsin

    and Illinois.

I had the privilege to march with Jim in the Boys of 76 for many years. Jim

was about the nicest guy you will ever meet, and I learned a LOT from him.

Everyone that knew Jim will miss him.

Please keep Jim's wife Jean and daughter Andrea in your prayers.

  6. No sorry..the arena dude is right. I saw it at a madison scout open house a few years ago. There was a display of many note books spread across three or four tables. these books had copies of all of the score sheets since I think the 50's. I looked at 68 and saw the royal aires flag penilty listed. without that penilty they would have won. If the madison scouts still have their open house go there and check it out.

Scroll down the page at this link for a photo copy of the 1968 VFW Finals recap distributed to the corps that evening.

    http://racinekiltiealumni.org/4_1968_Kiltie_Photos.html

Royal Airs had a 1 point penalty, without which they would have been 2nd with a score of 89.00.

    The Kilties scored 89.85.

Scroll down the page at this link for the recap on official VFW stationary, released later by the VFW as the "Official Breakdown" from finals.

    HEY THERE BUDDY!!

If what I read is true...are you taking a year off?

Not seeing YOU on the field will be almost as tough as not not seeing Rich Skare at DCA..

Still hoping to see you this summer..

    Pat

BTW - that sounds like a killer show, can't wait to see and hear it. :worthy:

OK Pat... The cat's out of the bag...

I know that this may come as a shock to you, but after 17 years on the field with our beloved Kilties, me and Moon are giving our marching shoes a rest this summer. I'll remain an active member of the board of directors and will continue to run The Great Lakes Brew Fest, and Moon is still doing uniform storage/fitting/inventorying/chasing etc. Don't worry, you'll still see us around this summer.

Edit: That's 17 years for me... 31 years for Moon (including 17 all age, 4 in Kiltie Kadets, 8 in Kiltie Jr. and 2 Kiltie Reunion corps)

  8. One thing I love about the Alumni activity is that you guys have a show ready for public consumption in April. Gotta hand it to you guys. Cudos.

I like that, too. But it's not just alumni corps that are ready to perform in April. I enjoyed seeing the Kilties performance at the South Milwaukee Civic Center on March 27th, 2011. They performed:

Their 2011 concert piece "Water is Wide"

    Their 2011 parade repertoire including:

    • Scotland the Brave
    • Conquest (Yup THAT Conquest)

Their 2011 complete field show repertoire "The Three Faces of Drum Corps" including:

    • Movement 1 "Tradition" (A medley of Brigadoon, McCoys Reel and Auld Lang Syne)
    • Movement II "Evolution" (MacArthur Park)
    • Movement III "Exploration" (Interstellar Suite)

    It was awesome!

  9. curious as to how they are going to triple their hornline.

    From the announcement:

3 MUSIC DAYS * 3 DRILL CAMPS * 3 SHOW CAMPS * DCA in NY

I think this is a genius idea. One of the biggest barriers to recruiting in today's all age competitive activity is the time commitment required for typical corps membership. Most open class DCA corps require members to be fully engaged for almost every summer weekend. That means that members have to give up a LOT to be involved. I will be interested to see how the Chops model works. If their limited time commitment model is successful, it could be emulated in other places, leading to a real shot in the arm for the all age activity. Good luck Chops. I'm rooting for you!

  10. Racine has a symphony orchestra???

Racine has been blessed with very fine Symphony Orchestra since 1932 (they are 2 years older than the Kilties). Begun by Frederick Schulte, who served as conductor for many years, the orchestra has performed under the batons of Dudley Powers, Stephen Colburn, David Becker, Alexander Platt, and Andrew Massey. RSO is currently led by Music Director Pasquale Laurino and Summer Pops Artistic Director Richard Carsey.

    Check them out here:

  11. No Sun Devils in 2011 = A Bummer

Hang in there John. I know you have the know-how and tenacity to bring your corps back.

If fielding a drum corps was easy, anyone could do it. Luckily, John Hoekstra is not

just anyone! Stay committed brother, and remember: SDWBD (Sun Devils Winnea Bea Daunted!)

    Go Sun Devils!!!

  12. Sun Devils camp scheduled for this weekend, January 22 & 23, is cancelled.

No camp this weekend.Extreme circumstances have forced us to cancel.

    John Hoekstra

    Executive Director

I'm guessing that John Hoekstra, being a native Cheesehead and Packer fan,

couldn't "bear" the thought of missing his beloved team lift the Hallas

    Trophey at Soldier Field. :)

    Go Pack!

  13. Allow me to clarify.

This is a competitive circuit and by the nature of that winning should be the primary focus.

I think this is true for some drum corps in DCA (and DCI and other circuits), and for the corps that choose to make winning their primary focus/purpose/goal/reason to exist, it is certainly noble, legitimate and worthwhile. But to say that winning should be the primary focus of a corps, just because it belongs to a competitive circuit, is a pretty big leap. In fact, a quick review of the mission statements, goals and philosophies of most all-age corps as published on their web sites reveals that winning is not the stated primary focus of most corps in DCA. I more often see stated goals such as striving for excellence, promoting character and self discipline, achieving ones full potential, etc... than winning.

  14. Back in the day, (and even to this day a little bit) our rivalries have had more to do with who had the most and best dirty bus songs, and who could sing them the best. We always felt like we could out-sing any corps at any time.

The first serious singing rivalry that I was involved in was between the Boys of 76 and the Bismark Governaires in the early 80s. I vividly remember our first encounter with them at a show in Mankato, MN. They marched into the post show party with a half barrel of beer singing "Gross F'ers in the Sky". We knew instantly that we had met our match, but we managed to hold our own with them, trading blows song for song until the half barrel was gone, and then some.

Then there was the Kilties/Chops encounter at the Wisconsin State Fair Park show in 98. At the party after the show on the infield of the race track, Chops went toe for toe with us, producing as many dirty lymrics as us, which is the first and only time that anyone has ever been able to match us in the dirty lymric department. Nice job Chops! Very impressive!

Most recently, at DCA this past Labor Day weekend, we traded songs/blows with Kidsgrove Scouts on the street on I&E night outside the convention center. Their knowledge of the traditional English rugby repertoire made for one of the best drum corps songfests of recent memory. A new rivalry was born!
