  1. My son picked up his first trumpet in the 5th grade, I thought, “Well wonder how long this will last?” By the 7th grade he was sold so I got him a better trumpet and a wonderful tutor. He never let me or himself down.

I regret with every fiber that I was not at all of his high school competitions but I did see a few. My daughter is the Capt. of Color Guard and a senior in high school; I have not missed a single show. She got accepted by BK but I said “NO.” I housed boys for years; I wasn’t ready to let her go yet but next year. Her brother is doing visual for BK this year but when he returns he will be teaching visual for her high school, a dream they both have shared.

The first year with BK was great ’98; good times and I had begun to travel to different cities to watch. Through Sound Machine I even hooked up and drank a beer with a few people. Every year I went to finals after that I travelled more to other shows as airline prices dropped..

Since BK was having trouble and several of the boys wanted to age out with a bang they auditioned and got spots on BD. One of the most memorable experiences of my life was after the final in Madison, “the age out” kids were putting mementos on the field, I got on the field and was taking pictures of everyone with all kinds of cameras; Just shear happiness and lot’s of tears. By this time my name was just Craig’s Mom.

As BD turned to leave the field and I yelled out “Good Bye, See you at the buses.” Tobias, the Drum Major, and several of the brass turned and yelled you’re walking out with us. They had seen me so many times in the practice stands; I did haircut runs and just had a great time with them so I guess they were serious. I looked at Craig and he just shrugged. I stepped it up and walked along side of them, as they entered the tunnel they all started singing California Girl, I was singing too.

I thought my heart was going to pop out, I was crying, what an honor to me. I will remember that for the rest of my life. In my wildest dreams did I ever dream I would be so honored to walk off a field after finals with BD, or any other corps for that matter? The energy, work, tears of the corps saying their good-byes…WOW :worthy:

  2. As a member of the TV Media, I'm always so impressed with how savy the Madison press and media outlets are when it comes to covering DCI for the entire week. The Newscast really play it up. I remember when they used to have a parade

around the Capital that featured all the corps, it was terrific! The atmosphere all around Madison is electric with excitement.

I must also give a shout out to LaCrosse, The Blue Stars show I attended there in 2006 was wonderful too. The Radison Hotel by the lake, down the street from the stadium is in a beautiful setting. Wisconsin is just a incredible drum corps capital.

I agree with you 100%, I enjoyed driving around Madison and out in the country, just beautiful!

  3. Even if you didnt have that resume, you still have a right to say what you want. And your opinion is just as important as anyone else here.....Im proud to call you my friend and you raised an awesome son !

    G

Why thank you, G! Remember when we use to at it on RAND or RANT or whatever it was, you were BOY1230 and you sure could push my buttons, LOL?

I am still trying to get my schedule worked out for Allentown. Craig is pushing pretty hard for that show. He thinks I would have more fun there than in Indy. I guess they have an awesome karaoke bar and the fans are over the top. Should be a fun time. Hoping to see you there, remember the first round is on you!

  4. Hard to tell what year her kids were in. Especially with 13 posts in 8 years lol

Now that you know my history, let's get it out in the open. You joined the board May 12, 2010-Member 29,692. I joined June 28, 2002-Member 1042, so I would say if you post ridulous insults your numbers are probably higher than mine...I guess I believe in quality not quanity! What you said about me is trivial and quite frankly funny but it did add to your post numbers. Oh boy, congratulations your posts are growing all the time. You are just a wealth of knowledge aren't you, just look at all of your posts! :worthy:

  5. your a parent of a members corps that lost

My, my are we all knowing??? First and foremost there are not losers in Drum Corps, let me make that perfectly clear!

I am a parent of one of the visual instrutors for BK and he has traveled the last three years with them. He also does visuals for several high schools throughout CO, so I think I have learned a few things along the way.

I have been around drum corps many years my friend and I was not aware that the amount of posts made here were a part of the resume for having an opinion. BTW, I see you have only been a member of this board since May 2010, I've been on since 2002, at least when I write I have something to say, hmmm.

All total with band and DCI I have put in 17-years so far and have a daughter starting DCI next summer. Should she go every year as my son did I will have been around it for 24-years. Due to her age I opted out of letting her go this year, although she auditioned and made the grade for BK. My son was 17 years-old when he started but having housed members for years (boys), I decided sending my daughter at 16-years-old is a different issue all together.

Most of my posts were made on Sound Machine years ago but I am sure there are many on here who know me. Ask me how many shows I have been to? I have flown in to see almost every San Antonio show, I have seen almost every final in Madison and was in Washington, D.C. and Buffalo for finals. I have not missed Drums for 15-years as I am from CO.

My son marched both BK and BD thus my avatar. My daughter made WGI this year in Dayton, where I went to see her, traveling to see Drum Corps is a passion.

So yes, I am a parent but my statement was not made as an emotional boo hoo, it was made as an observation and my personal opinion. So there you have it, my resume, do I have a right to say what I see now?

  6. It was scored just not publicly and I thought that in the conditions they were in they did very well. Got word from a friend on the tour that they felt in many ways they had their best show. Audio Quality/wind and bad video quality do no give you a clear picture of what it sounded and looked like.

    WP

I've heard there are a few funky judges that are playing favorites and BK is not one of them  It does happen, seen it too many years now with too many corps and I think it stinks!

  7. I should hear from my son pretty soon! Probably you "twitter'ers" will get scores earlier. I talked to him last night and he was sure beat but they are feeling great going into this.

I got Fan Network yesterday, WOW, I can't wait to see BK tomorrow night. I must say some of the "regular top tier corps" have alot of work to do. I really don't care for BD's show this year.

Have my seats for tomorrow night, section 310, looking forward to seeing the corps tomorrow night, should be interesting.

  8. Personally I'm very proud of the corps and it's current and past members, but I am also proud for Mark Arnold and his staff. Mark wouldn't want the limelight or to have his name in lights, but he's one of the longest tentured Corps Directors in DCI and really doesn't get the credit deserved. (top 3 in years with the corps I believe) Mark and his staff have never been afraid to test the boundries of competitive drum corps and they've done so successfully. The fact that BK is in a spot Geographically where it does not have a ton of corps around it makes it more isolated and thus maybe over the years a little forgotten. Through it all, BK has weathered each season with integrity and a family atmoshphere. One of my students who couldn't march this year after marching last said it best- He said-"I don't know what made you (Wes) think that the Blue Knights would be a good fit for me, but I could have never imagined such bonds and a feeling of team that I found at BK. I know I'll age out there and will be back next season." That's the unit, and the community that Mark Arnold- Andy, Marc, Jeff, Craig and other wondeful instructors have set up. Is it a surprise to see them beat SCV? I answered no, not because I am biased, but because I know the leadership that is represented in that corps day in and day out!! I GO ON! GO BK, KICK BUTT IN FRONT OF THE HOME CROWD!!

By the by, good to hear from you Tricia, tell Craig hello, and if he stays on through Texas I'll see him. I however don't know what in the world you'd be subjecting your daughter to....... ha ha ha ha

    Wes Perkins

    BK '97 '98

He'll be there, I know he would like to see you. He told me about your job, congrats! I hope he goes to Texas to look for work, they've layed off so many teachers here he stands a very slim chance of teaching.

  9. Hate to disagree with you here but I must. Would it be a bigger acheivement if they went on to beat them in finals later on in the summer? Absolutely and we all know that the one that truly counts is August 14th. However, it is a HUGE acheivement because this is the first time in corps history that they've ever beaten SCV. This only the third corps that BK has beaten that has won a DCI title in the last 25 years. Phantom in '98 and Madison in '99 were the others. The is absoluetly a big deal. My congrats to all current BK members- you deifne the word perserverence and the never say die attitude. I am an extremely proud alum and teacher who knows that my students in the past and present are getting the experience of a lifetime!! I GO ON..... Keep it up!

Amen, Wes. Craig's on visual again this year and Stacia, my daughter & Craig's little sister, will go on tour next year. She tried out and made it this year but after putting a boy through Drum Corps I had a few reservations about putting my daughter out there just yet. LOL--you know, been there, done that!

  10. Blue Knights - are coming in and showing what they are made of. Lots of Vets and huge Color Guard, great colors.

Blue Devils - Haven't seen them yet, can't wait until Drums to see them.

Third - I have to hold off until I see more.

A little bias as my son is a visual instructor for Blue Knights!

    Whooo Hoooo!
