It always seemed like Free was in the lot about six hours ahead of their step-off time. That shows good road planning.
Yep, that was us. First to arrive last to leave...

Drum Judge Jeff Prosperie lowballed SCV's drumline tonight.... Almost a whole point lower than the 2 judges last night and the other drum judge tonight.

Olson!!! Why are you NOT here???
I assume you mean Mike? We didn't even let him use Olson back in his marching days! :P

Cool, there are recaps on-the-fly too!

Wow. These stories seem to get more and more fantastic every time they are told. Chad threw down the plaque at retreat and a horn player chopped it in half with the battle axe?! Let's get this story straight. I was there too. At retreat the battery was up in front of the horn line in the block, just behind the color guard, so we had a clear view of exactly what happened.
Here is what happened. At retreat, when they announced our score, Chad ran over to the Troopers block, grabbed the gun out of the Trooper DM's holster, ran up to the judges and shot them all in the head.
That is why we didn't make finals.
Peace
Wasn't that after the Troopers DM had killed Craig the Bass Drummer and his twin brother had to come in and cover his spot in the line....?

Financial reasons lead to the death.
We tried to get sponsorship from The Limited, apparently they are based out of Columbus. Too bad, we could have been the best dressed corps out there.
Yep, Limited is based in Columbus. So is Abercrombie & Fitch....

Actually, there is amplified talking throughout the entire feature by four colorguard members. After each section plays a lick, one of the characters will say a sentence. This happens throughout the entire thing.
lame <**>

What I learned about Woodburn as an instructor that I didn't know as a marching member is that there's a Pizza Hut just a couple blocks up the road.
Yeah, all you had to do was ask... The pitlings always knew where the nearest store, fast food or drink machine was at a site.

This whole subject makes me miss retreats again. These kids don't realize how much they are being cheated with the DM only retreats. And the shows have lost a little of the luster for me.

I marched in that show(Black Gold). Glad to know I could change your life..
Nah, it was probably my performance in the Freelancers' pit that night. :P
-
I told this over in the Freelancers thread....
Riverside 1987
I had just decided to join the corps that morning (I'd been to the Memorial Day Camp, but hadn't committed yet). So I was technically in a corps before I saw my first show. B)
That was the year of SCV playing Russian Christmas Music, and I've been hooked ever since.

The Cadets hire a professional Chef for tour dont they?
Does the chef annoyingly sing during the meal too?
I couldn't resist....

Spider Monkey (a/k/a David Brothers) is working at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs running a particle accelerator. He is allegedly a genius. :)
Does that make him a lab monkey now? Because I'm against animal testing. <**>

I believe the Physical damage category was always taken by Spider Monkey. No one could out hurt themselves to beat that guy. I remember he left a nice blood stain on the ceiling of Bus 9.

I wear spandex by choice
Yeah, me too....except it stretches so much it looks like fish net

Ok so my Dane memories will probably reinforce pit stereotypes, but I'll tell it anyway....
Usually during 10 to 10's at Sac State, typical summer in Sac... 90 degrees of blasting sun. The corps would be out practicing drill for a few hours. We were usually having a sectional with or without the mallets. Then Dane would just come up with something out of the blue like "Dude, I could go for a Slurpee" and we'd all pile in a car and got to 7-11. Or "Dude, I want to go swimming." And then we'd all go over to whatever river ran along Sac State and take a dip. It definitely broke up the monotony of 10 to 10's.

OK, I have jotted down some notes as I read through this entire thread tonight.
Bill Garcia - Bill! And "green", sorry....
Todd - The first two words that came to mind were the dreaded "crotch rot". Sorry.... I do remember you were the most hyped person on the long LA to Sac camp rides. (Man, when was the last time I used hyped?)
Mike Grogan - The man who taught all the rookies in 87 what meant to be a Freelancer.
Pat - The dude who taught me that the f word can be used not only as a verb, but a noun, adjective, adverb, even a conjunction. The poster child for "tour mouth". Luv ya man even though you used to smack the crap out of my knuckles holding ride cymbals in 87. How's Mike?
Lance - Well, at lease we got to see finals in 2001
Kelli - Now everyone else is jealous and depressed because our corps jackets don't fit anymore... :P Isn't the pit much more fun than being in the guard? Although I see they still have you wear spandex... boy is everyone happy that wasn't a requirement for our pit.
Some of my favorite moments:
1987 My shako falling off at Semis, and I never wore one again for the next four years.
1988 Being cut from the pit at one of the camps, but not realizing that's what the staff was doing. I managed to negotiate my way back into my spot. I only realized that what they were doing weeks later. Duh! Oh well too late, and it worked out for the best
1989 Another One Bites the Dust
1990 The live bat in the hallway in Centerville, OH to hype before the Batman show. And I seem to recall a dream.....
* CSUN 1990, Lance and Roger Johnson on tenors and the snare line was me, Steve Moder (who's on Lance's immediate right in that snare picture earlier in the forum) Louie Calavaro and Kurt Stirling - All Freelancers
1991 Lynn and I spent a whole Sunday in a practice room at PCC and augmented the whole mallet book. We had such a blast adding mallet runs into the opener. Then we had to convince Tad to let us put them in.
One Charlie-ism I always remembered is "You create what is said about you." It actually has real world meaning too, go figure....

The BD and Bluecoats shows are totally like a WGI show. No wonder they score so high, but bore me so much!
