  1. I often think that some who insist that drum corps is a sport are more likely responding to the pedestal upon which society places sports in general. Since sports obviously maintains an elevated status within our society, and since most of us love this activity dearly, and since it does employ athletic principles, I think people want to insert drum corps into that "class" so as to lend more credibility to what we do. Noble, certainly, but misguided, IMO. And I'm a huge sports fan.

I totally agree with this!! Society also wants to put cheerleading in the sports category.

Let me make it even simpler.

    Definition of performing arts

    Dictionary

"arts, such as drama, dance, and music, that involve performance before an audience"

Pretty straight forward and describes exactly what drum corps is.

Also, it's takes tremendous amount of athleticism to dance, especially ballet. Is ballet a sport. Absolutety not. Let's not kid ourselves by calling drum corps a sport.

    From Wikipedia

"The Performing arts include the dance, music, opera, theater, and circus arts.

Artists who participate in these arts in front of an audience are called performers, including actors, comedians, dancers, musicians, and singers. Performing arts are also supported by workers in related fields, such as songwriting and stagecraft.

Performers often adapt their appearance, such as with costumes and stage makeup, etc."

"In performance art, usually one or more people perform in front of an audience. In contrast to the traditional performing arts, performance art is unconventional. Performance artists often challenge the audience to think in new and unconventional ways about theater and performing, break conventions of traditional performing arts, and break down conventional ideas about "what art is," similar to the postmodern art movement. "

Again, this is placing drum corps squarely as a performing art. There are elements of sports in a performing art, but that in itself does not make it a sport.

    Excellent Post!!

  2. Oh how you put the word ART on a pedestal...

I really have trouble finding where the "sport" part of this activity comes in to play, other than being judged and winning points...

Yeah, I'm also puzzled about the sport part. Let's enjoy this activity for what it is.

  3. A corps chaplain is a good thing to have. It doesn't really matter what particuliar denomination. Sometimes kids need to talk about things that they won't tell anybody else. We had a bass drummer one time who's sister hung herself and he came home and found her. A corps chaplain would have come in very handy then, but we didn't have one, so we just did the best we could to comfort one of our corpsmates, and most of us were only 18 at the time.

    Very good post!

Favorite Show Of All Time (So Far): 2000 Cadets

  5. I really like Phantom's show. I think they tell the story quite nicely. And the ballad is very beautiful. But compared to Cavaliers, PR seems stuck in the 80s, both visually and musically. Their drill looks like 80s Cadets to me. And their brass is powerful, but very raw. Not nearly as refined as Cavies. I don't think their drill or music is as demanding as Cavaliers.

Don't get me wrong - I love the show. But by current judging standards, I don't see it beating Cavies.

When have the Cavaliers ever had music that was demanding? The drill? Definitely. The music? Not in this decade they haven't.

  6. Crown over Cadets: not a surprise at all. Crown's show is not perfect and it still strikes me as Hooked on Classics, with none of the music getting a chance to fully develop, BUT it is well crafted and they are simply performing it at such a high level that it works. Their sound is unreal and the guard is amazingly clean for midseason. The whole show just grabs you by the neck and demands that you show it respect.

It sounds like Crown can do a lot more with this show. It could be a masterpiece come World Championships. I can't wait to see the recaps.

  7. Crown while is incredible didn't have their best run. Claire was great with many changes that will be great when cleaned. Tempos seemed much faster tonight which caused some ensemble issues. Still the best sound in dci from the hornline (in my opinion). This show has so far to go it will be amazing by finals and is so demanding. All three captions are so strong and the design is great band with the tweaks they will make ut will continue to develope. Keep it up crown your the best keep up the great entertainment.

They didn't have their best run and scored an 85??? WOW!!

  8. 4th was realistic last year.....(i honestly thought they shoulda got it) This year, that seems reasonable, but there are some corps that are alot better this year than last (e.g. SCV, Phantom) which will make it harder to get there.

ANYTHING is possible even if there are some "omnipotent" people here on DCP that believe otherwise.

I agree. Crown should have been top five last year

I just saw them making some changes to the runs and chords at the end of vesuvius a few days ago (as well as a few narration tweaks) They also had a day to practice yesterday, so I assumed some of those changes took effect. Not anything drastic i guess, but small changes can make a big difference.

The Cadets are always known for making lots of changes to their show. You never know what they're going to do. Remember last year they completely changed their opener?

  9. Well, that's an interesting take on it. Do you respond to being yelled at? What's the threshold of whatever it is you did or didn't do that would justify it?

I'm all about being personally accountable; this type of an activity demands that kind of accountability. I just wonder how many kids respond to that kind of thing, or whether instructors risk a kid shutting down rather than taking the instruction beneath the bluster.

I'd argue, btw, that there is not MUCH of a difference between yelling and verbal abuse. You yell at me to keep me from harm or from harming someone else, that's justified because you need to get my attention. You yell at me because I didn't do what you expected me to do, I'm probably going to focus on your behavior rather than your expectation. Which is the mature way to communicate?

You bring up a very valid point! IMHO, yelling and screaming at the top of your throat at people is not leadership. I think it's immature and people aren't really going to take you seriously. And yeah, they're going to focus on your behavior. You might get laughed at or knocked out, but the latter doesn't solve anything. When you lead a group of people, you lead them towards a common goal or purpose. You should be mature, knowledgeable, willing to listen, and having a commanding presence. There are times when people in leadership should show constructive criticism, not destructive criticism because words have power.

  10. 2003 - beginning of season - new uniforms, new look and specifically, NEW SOUND for the corps after a rather flat 2002. I saw them early on at Giants stadium. I was distracted by the new unis and the plume on the side of their shako, until they hit the first big hit after all of the bell sounds - WOW, quickly forgot about the plumes after that :)

I would have to agree. Bellisimo was really when they got my attention!

    Then 05, 06, & 07 :laugh::lol:

  11. The Cavaliers Guard has always been consistently good and clean! They make everything look so easy. Same with Crown's guard making their work look easy. They have improved so much over the past few years. I believe Colts have always had large numbers in their guard. The Blue Devils guard is well-conditioned and in great shape. They must have a lot of dance training.
