  1. Cavaliers dropped way down to an 8.6 in Brass General Effect in Finals. That was 0.6 under the score given 27th Lancers and 1.1 under Bridgemen. The drum line also dropped to 6th after being 2nd in Prelims, 1.05 under Blue Devils after being within 0.2 in Prelims. (The corps finished 0.6 under Bridgemen and 0.7 under 27th.)

That was my second of three years in the corps. I don't know if Finals was that much worse than Prelims or if we were scored too high in Prelims. Things just didn't break our way in Finals.

Thanks Boo for saving me the trouble of looking at fromthepressbox again. I've posted these scores a few times through the years showing how drastically scores could change from day to day in the old "tick" days. It was interesting that some judges found certain ticks all season long that other judges didn't.

The other memory from that year was getting pelted with crap from the back upper deck stands by The Muchachos. Loose change, mouthpieces, hot dogs, etc landed near me as I marched to the back of the field during Firebird. Then we find that some idiot put thier buses next to ours. Let's just say that things would have been "interesting" if our management didn't step in and stop us from leaving the busses with our buckles in hand. That's when I was taught this fine art form passed down from one Cavalier generation to another.

  2. Doesn't Cavies or Cadets do their banquets towards the end of tour?

This is the first year The Cavaliers had theirs right after DCI. In fact it was at an Indianapolis airport hotel to make it easier for people to get home faster. Additionally, last years members were lucky enough to join us during the 60th Dinner, the Sunday before DCI. So they got fed REALLY well twice in one week.

Up until this year, they had the banquet during their November camp in the O'Hare/Rosemont area. And WAY before that, the banquet was around the Christmas holiday. It was a lot easier then since most of the families and kids were from the Chicago area.

  3. Really?

So there were only 23 non ageout veterans in the drum corps this year?

That doesn't seem like a very high number...

Considering they have been "renewed" and they are new to Div I (sorry it will take me awhile to get used to World/Open) it doesn't suprise me.

  4. Cavies Alumni

Great Job! I loved the show. The old school uni's were cool. The drums were great! THe guard really super! But I must say I enjoyed the horns the most (I'm a soprano). Great sound!! Good stuff all around. Drum corps needs more satin.

Thanks again and thanks for the memories.

    Randy,

I still remember Chris walking up to me after your performance and said "we got a lot of work to do to try to top that!"

I'll let others decide if we "beat" you  but I can tell you I do think all that hard work paid off in the end. But there were some tough days. As I am sure you understand.

Re: music. My wife (who marched drum corps) told me when it was decided to form CAC888 "well, the Cavaliers are not necessarily known for your music like Madison is. What will you play?" Well, I can say we proved her wrong. She was dancing in the aisle with my 8 month old daughter that Friday night during Sing Sing Sing, loved the songs from the 80's (when she marched) and was choked up during Rainbow.

    Thanks for your kind thoughts.

p.s. sell you my sweaty satin blouse. It was HOT but the shako was even hotter!

  5. WOW... just saw some video of the CAC at semi's, and I don't know whether it's been mentioned yet, but what a blast! It was great to hear Bully again and even more, the Somewhere medley (still my favorite drum part of the era). Especially nice job getting the same horn balance in the rotation push as in the old exit drill (well, as in the recordings anyway). Needed some marching tymps, though (that's for you, Boo!) Thanks, guys! Can't wait for the DVD!

Thanks! It was a blast but I am glad it is over. This 47 year old body just can't do the 8 hour rehearsals in 90 degree heat anymore. Plus, my wife was about ready to devorce me. ANd she's a drum corps wife!

People ask me why I did it:

During one set in Bully I had a guy who marched in 1948 to my left and a guy who marched in 2003 to my right. THAT'S why I did it.

  6. man, I hated you guys for this. Comin' around and scammin' on all the squirrel... :worthy:

It seemed to me at the time that EVERY girl with a 50 mile radius was crazy about the Cavaliers or some Cavalier guy specifically.

Bill Hardy use to kick me out of Guardmen practice all the time. Of course, wearing my corps jacket didn't help but it did help in.... as you say it... meeting some "squirrel"???!

As usual, Cavaliers stealing the lady's. I am sure the current members are upholding our reputation!

  7. No pressure, huh? I missed the step-over in Crown's show -again - last night. How did it look? (My wife just doesn't get that I should not be bothered when I have the door closed and the sound is up...)

I hope I can get my step size figured out before I kill someone in the guard...

If I can step over the bums in downtown Chicago, stepping over these guys will be a piece of cake.

  8. as I predicted, their easy, unoriginal, reshashed show will catch up with them. Oddly, they arent executing or performing that show that well either. Of all captions that Cavies consistently take, it's GE....their brass and percussion, for past 3 years, have only hung on by a thread, but their GE made up for it...oh well, times change...make room for new blood: Carolina Crown.

Yep. They suck. Same old, same old top three. Boring. By the end of the year, they'll barely make finals.

  9. then we get all the corps together to go off on them Cap Reg style (vs NIU a couple of years ago)....which reminds me...why not NIU? it was a great stadium when i went to DCM finals a few years ago...or has DCI stayed away because of the Cap Reg/Northern football fiasco? that can't be it actually cause Cavies spent most of everydays there.

    1) Not enough seats

    2) Have you BEEN to DeKalb? If you have you would not say such a thing. It's a cow field and it has maybe 2 Hotel 6's.

  10. Why not Soldier Field? DCI right on the lake, lots of schools within an hour or so, the Ryan is finally finished (and looked quite nice since I haven't been on it in two years), yes the Edens is being worked on, as is 90/39 north of Rockford, but hey, it's doable.

Well, if The Bears #####ed about what concerts did to the turf, I can only imagine what they will say about a bunch of band geeks stomping on the turf for 4 days.

  11. Wow,,real drum corps music.I am getting goosebumps watching it.

Some really nice brass moments there. The drums were a bit over powering at times.Especially when the horn line was trying to play soft.As a brass guy,,its important to me to be able to hear those soft moments. They are written into the music for a reason.

Not sure where the drums were situated.I am assuming by the side line closest to the mic?IF so that is to be expected.Perhaps moving them to back field will bring out those soft brass moments better.

Things will be different when we start marching the show. Our brass instructors (one being none other then Jim Elvord) keep stressing dynamics but the drummers, well, are drummers :worthy: They think everything should be all out fffff.

  12. I had no idea that guy had done drum corps. Great musician, great conductor. I think he also does film arranging. Great set of ears.

In 1976 he was with Northwestern School of music and he had some of his professors give us free private lessons. The BEST 4 hours of my musical life. I learned more in those four hours then my 10 years playing the trumpet for band or drum corps.

  13. It appears to me as a long-time lurker, first time poster that Phantom gets taken to task more for its (sometimes) weak visual presentations while the Cavaliers have often (until this thread, it seems) been given a pass on the relatively weak musical presentations.

Well, I'm not exactly sure where you've been lurking but I have read, seems, hundreds of posts critical of the Cavalier brass book. And as someone who has some inside information, I know that some of the hardest critics come from west of Chicago

But that's OK. Like professional teams, you play to your strangths although I don't think The Cavaliers brass has held them back over the last 8 years considering their record. 5 Championships in 8 years. I'll take that formula over one that gives you 3rd place consistantly anyday.

  14. Mitch,

From first hand account, it was deafening on the field. I couldn't hear the guys marching on either side of me. I remember the crowd jumping and the sound was like a wave crashing over us. MAN THAT WAS FUN!!!!!

Wish I could have been there. That would have been my ageout year if I wouldn't have burnt out on drum corps. But, here I am marching again in the Alumni Corps 30 years later.

The other ovation I remember when SCV brought back the Bottle Dance sometime in the 80's??????
