Dean Vernon Wormer: Greg, what is the worst drum corp forum on this campus?
Greg Marmalard: Well that would be hard to say, sir. They're each outstanding in their own way.
Dean Vernon Wormer: Cut the horse*&^%, son. I've got their disciplinary files right here. Who dropped a whole truckload of fizzies into the varsity swim meet? Who delivered the medical school cadavers to the alumni dinner? Every Halloween, the trees are filled with underwear. Every spring, the toilets explode.
Greg Marmalard: You're talking about DCP, sir.
Dean Vernon Wormer: Of course I'm talking about DCP, you TWERP!

Yeah....winning your first championship is hardly a disaster.
Might be thinking of Garfield 84 at Whitewater finals, tho....
The ultimate disaster. I said it before, watching it from the top of the famous hill at Whitewater while it happened, was one of the most painful things to watch..... ever.

I just want to say again how awesome this topic is. Been watching it for years. After digging around some old boxes this past weekend I found some old drum corp photo's of both Cavaliers and Suncoast (my wife marched). I just need to spend time to scan them.
Carry on...

First show of the year in Janesville WI, 1977. Half way through the opener, the left side of the field was about 5 counts ahead of the right side of the field. It took the DM about 10 seconds to get everyone on the same page. Nightmare. 10 seconds from hell. MAN the staff was PO'd.

I was just on a business trip that started near Rosemont, traveled through Rockford, Madison then ended up in LaCrosse. Too bad Blue Stars had their camp in Indy, I could have stopped in for a visit.
It is just interesting that there are 4 drum corps based off of one road.

2003 Cavaliers - Reverse Spin Cycle - the final move as they did the first 30 seconds of the show in reverse. Classic and inspired.
I know I am a little bias but not only do I think that this is one of the best endings of the decade, the whole show is under appreciated. Maybe the guard uni's were so hated, that they distracted from an amazing show.

Just pecking away at fromthepressbox I noticed there was a show with a date of "March 1976". March?
http://www.fromthepressbox.com/1976seasonscores.htm
First, is this right?
Second, assuming this was a full show on a field, is this the earliest a season has ever started? I know there were some judged standstills "back in the day" during the winter. I understand that is was in California and the weather could allow this but.....
.. and please, no rants about how short the season is these days. It is called beating a dead horse over and over and over....

From what I understand there were a lot of Suncoast alums on staff with Teal Sound.

So, what would I have to write to get you to pony up a sheckle or two??
I appreciate your commitment to Cavaliers, oldtimer, but I wish you'd look at the bigger picture. If young corps are not bred and raised the liklihood is that your beloved Cavies might not have a field on which to compete.
G7 or not, we feel that the dollars spent toward tickets ARE supporting the bigger picture. Quite honestly, it is a lot more then what I give to the Cavaliers. Now, you might disagree how DCI distributes those funds but that is a discussion for another topic. We have a hard time deciding what corps other then the corps we marched with to send money to. So we let DCI do it for us. Why is Imperial Sound more important then say, Capital Sound? or Pioneer? How do you choose where to send any money to? Answer; you go with your heart. This is why we are doing what we do.
I tell you what, if Imperial Sound has a booth at DCI this year and they have something my 3 year old likes, i'll buy something. Other then that, our disposable income is spoken for.

What a great write-up garfield! You almost got me to donate but my green blood just can't do it.
My wife and I pledged to each other that any $$'s donated to drum corps would be by way of me giving money to The Cavalier Endowment Fund (for obvious reasons) AND the thousands we pay in tickets, programs, souvies, etc. over the course of a drum corps season.
The best of luck to Imperial Sounds endeavors. Focusing on the local underprivileged is a gallant goal. I too have thought how great it would be to do the same here in Chicago. There are a lot of talented musicians and spinners South Shore on the south side of Chicago but they do not have the means financially to get out of their own little world. I hope to see you on the field some day.

Gotta say Suncoast here. Married a Suncoaster.
One of the things she talks about is that she envies The Cavaliers and their history. It makes her kind of sad in that because Suncoast no longer exists, the connection to all of those who she marched with was not there for so many years. Now with Facebook she has connected to many people she hasn't seen or talked to for years. There was talk of an alumni corps but it hasn't been talked about for awhile now. If the corps still existed maybe this would help connect the dots like The Cavaliers did, and the Scouts did.

I don't think anyone in the Cavaliers wants to talk about the sop solo in concert in 78. The first time we heard the soloist play it was in Lexington (i.e. Bluegrass Nationals?) and he NAILED it. DCI Prelims ... I REALLY don't know WHAT he was thinking!
What solo? That year never existed ;)

As I see you are fairly new to DCP, let me clue you in on the "rules" around here:
If a drum corps does anything that utilizes any technology or rules changes post 1990's, it is automatically hated. Further, anyone who likes anything a corps does that utilizes technology or modern rule changes will be reminded how it was done better, louder, in front of millions of more people by tens of thousands of more corps back in the 70's. You will be reminded that everyone hates this new-fangled technology, be told that no one goes to drum corps shows, and posters might even tell you they personally hate modern drum corps so much that they haven't had anything to do with DCI World Class drum corps in a decade (short of complain about DCI World Class drum corps constantly on DCP, or course).
With that in mind, please continue to enjoy your time in DCP: may it be fruitful and thought provoking
Freaking Hilarious! Spot on too.

Isn't this what was Division III?
-
Cavalier #1 not only a great over all staff but Mike Gaines puts them on top.
-
I went through the whole show without a mouth piece. We won the show and high horns.
LOL! Surprised they let you use a mouthpiece the rest of the year :)
-
It wasn't Larry P was it?
I think it was either Tommy Poz or Dave Wilson. If Larry had that problem he would just start hitting grand C's for the heck of it.
-
I believe the technical term for that kind of solo is a #### up.
LOL!! That's funny. I held a note a little to long in '76 and made the album. At least it sounded good and was in tune. As the famous Jim Alvord use to tell us in '77 "If you are going to &^%* up, at least make it a good sounding ^%&* up".
-
Ok, not on a grand scale like some of these but I had the solo in 75 in the Cavalier Cadets. I was 14. I played a solo in the song, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. Yes, the religious song. When I first started playing it I wasn’t loud enough. When I was loud enough I wasn’t in tune. Finally, by the end of the year I was doing pretty good but I got cocky and started doing this little horn spin before my solo. One show in front of the largest crowd of the year, with most of my family in the stands, I almost dropped my horn. ARGH. At 49 I still dream about it.
My cousin was recording the show on his cassette recorder and on the tape you can hear my cousin say in a low voice, “Oh, sh*&” right at that spot. Until the day he died, he never let me forget it. LOL!

I agree....Boston Crusaders in 1979. WOW!!!!!
Ya, I was marching then and when I could I made sure I would see Boston that year so I could hear Conquest. They were small but F'n loud.
Just add it to the list of items that define drum corps:
Conquest
Slaughter
Send in the Clowns
Bottle Dance
Legend
Rainbow
Z-Pull

Every single one of those tenors is a rookie.
Yep. One of the more famous years of transition for the Cavaliers. Many kids from the cadets come up to fill in spots and this is when Rosemont saved us from folding. Many of the "old timers" from the late 70's were aging out during this time, and some just saw the writing on the wall (lack of $$$) so 82 was a VERY young corps. But, those young guys stuck around for awhile and helped build the very foundation that brought in the new age Cavaliers in the late 80's and 90's.
Many of the older corps go through multiple transitions through their history. Some make it through them, most don't, unfortunetly.
-
Agreed. There are corps directors that dont make that much. If.. somehow there are staff being paid as much as the OP says at some corps.. well.. i hope i never see them come crying for money.
The names i heard are caption heads.
-
I haven't read through the gazillion posts on this subject but I was wondering what people thought of the idea of capping salaries for staff. Example; cap the amount paid for each caption head to $25,000. This will level the playing field for all corps. and in turn save corps a ton of money. Obviously the staff won't like it but if they are truly "educators" they won't mind taking a bullet for the betterment of the whole activity. And if they say, "fine, I'll just go to BOA" then so be it.
My numbers might be off because I do not know what staffs get paid in todays drum corps world, but personally, I think paying someone $100K (I've heard this number related to several individuals) in a not-for-profit activity that is struggling is ridiculous.

So, if DCI lost 68% of the 12,000 people who attended finals, that means 8,000 people who would have showed up if there were no woodwoods, didn't . So the question is can the additon of woodwinds not only make up that thos 8,000 people but add more butts in the stands on top of that...... I think not.

So when was the last time we've read these words discribing a Cavalier hornline with the likes of BD, Cadets, PR and even Crown in the same lineup??
I have obviously heard about the new "things" the hornline is doing this year. Although some people will miss the "musical" hornlines of the past from The Green Team, it sounds like the volume will impress us throughout the season. It's the age old debate, musicallity vs volume. Too bad we all can't agree you can have both.
