I agree. The Cavaliers, imo, ushered in the Visual Age of the DCI era. They got to the top primarily on the strength of their outstanding visual innovations. While most other Corps at the time were bringing a box of checkers to play a game of checkers in competition, visually, the Cavaliers came prepared to play Chess. It was whole nuttha ballgame when they did so. Then other Corps then in response strenthened their visual ( and guard ) programs, and the Cavaliers ran into more competition on the visual and guard side. The Cavaliers stayed with their formula, as it worked very well for them. Now the Corps is in a rethinking mode, and one can notice their trend toward more fan friendly musical offerings, as Corps now move slowly but surely away ( in my opinion ) from the Visual Age into a more balanced age of merging the music with the visual. Plus, The Cavaliers went through some management transitions that impacted them a bit as well. That would be my thought on this anyway.

Cavaliers: This is another show that has a lot of stuff going on. BUT, they do a much better job telling the story, "Mad World." This is another show that I really like because it has a clear theme, a clear beginning/middle/end, and is wonderfully performed. The all three sections mix/mingle throughout the show (the entire hornline joining the guard on rifles was a great moment) and compliment each other's strengths.
Overall - The Cavies are, once again, a solid corps with a great show. I don't agree with their score/placement tonight, but I have no doubt that they'll be solidly in contention for a medal.
Interesting. I haven't seen any shows this year yet thus why I read reviews like no tomorrow. But it is interesting that most of the reviews see something completely opposite then you. Others have said that the Cavaliers theme is not clear and it's not cohesive.

I liked Cadets' 2010 show Saturday night.
There. I said it.
Absolutely nothing to gripe about. For the first time in a decade. I did not get a hot dog. I watched. I enjoyed.
But I do have to complain about something... but what? ... There HAS to be something...ummmmm....
AH!! I have it: George is distracting when he paces the sideline during the performance. hehehehehe.
Well, last year was the first time in a decade I liked their show. It seemed last year they reverted back to drum corps rather then theater on the field. Maybe it was because it was a anniversary year. Haven't seem them yet this year but could we have two years in a row where I like them?? We'll see.

As someone who has yet to see a show, I am just going off of the photo's seen here on DCP. But I am struck by the shear number of horns. It seems the 70 - 80 man horn lines jsut add so much.... mass to the field.
Honestly though..... in this regard, it is starting to truely start looking like marching band. Ever see a 400 member band on the field at half time? we are getting there.

The only reason why I disagree with the Spirit choice; I agree, they were pretty loud.... for one maybe two times during the show. And I agree, the first impact was probably the loudest ever. But, for multiple loudness moments (i.e "show" per the OP's post), nothing touches Muchachos 74 and/or Madison 75.

Since most of the people on this site weren't even born yet, you just will never understand.
You have never really experienced a face peeling since you never saw Muchachos of 74 and Madison of 75. Musical..... no. Loud. No question. I have seen and heard pretty much every corps since then because I have been to every DCI except Whitewater and Miami. Some say Kingsmen were the loudest but I never saw them so I cannot judge.

The corps was partially sponsored by the Wausau Insurance Company. They used to run television ads
that told the "Wausau story" of the various people they helped with their insurance coverage, etc. It became a mantra of sorts for the entire city of Wausau.
Didn't they have a cadet corps call the Wausau Pages. I always assumed this was a play on words, as in pages in a story book but not sure.

Ahhh.... the Illinois State Fair. My tie into drum corps came from here.
In '72 (I was 11) my parents took me and my brother down to Springfield for vacation. We then went on to St. Louis for a Cubs/Cards series. As we were walking around the fair grounds we noticed a bunch of kids in uniforms being taken out of the track stadium on stretchers. It was 100 degrees at 1:00 in the afternoon. Uniforms back then were made of 100% wool and kids were dropping like flys. We went inside to see what was going on and saw our first drum corps perform. In between corps we saw a neighbor from Chicago walking up the stairs. He said hi and said he was on the staff of some corps named The Cavaliers. I just started playing the trumpet in the school band and as soon as he heard this he made the hard sell to my parents.
By the winter of '72/'73 I was practicing with the Cavalier Cadets and the rest, they say, is history.

Cliff Colnut - He let us have access to his musical staff at Northwesten University in 1976. I learned more about music in those 4 or 5 private lessons then I did all through out grade school and high school music classes.
Jim Elvord - Taught me how to take music and make it more fun then it already is. Took my talents to a higher level then I ever could think I could do.

Teal Sound gave us a glimpse of what the future holds for drum corps. i.e. guitars. Yet another step toward BOA and woodwinds.

OK, I know this is a shot in the dark but this has been bothering me for months now.
Recently I pulled out an old VHS tape of a Sesame Street movie from 1985 called Follow that Bird. (Hey, when your kid has cabin fever and she needs entertainment, you pull out all stops) Near the end of the movie there is a parade in some small town. In the parade is most certainly a drum corps since all the intruments were two valve bugles, no woodwinds. It was confirmed when I saw contra's not tuba's bringing up the rear. The uniforms were pink silk tops, with black shako's and black pants. (Maybe Star in the EARLY stages?) See the second trailer on http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089994/ at about 32 seconds. It shows just a flash of them. Of course, they could be wearing what was required for the movie and have nothing to do with their real uniforms.
I have searched the credits and the IMDb website but nothing. Any old timer like me out there have any idea?

My wife was a guard member that year and she still talks about how they felt not just that moment on the field, but the entire year in respect to the whole show. She also talks about when they performed on the memorial wall when they toured through DC.
That years horn book is one of the many reasons why Robert Smith is being inducted into the HOF this year.
