Besides, what has Wayne Downey ever achieved anyway?
Cali.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I saw them live in Clovis and Stockton, and at both shows the Cadets had (by far) the best pit balance.
I didn't see the FN broadcast last night, but overall I'd say it's probably nothing to worry about.

Vanguard seemed small, but that might have just been my imagination.

Too bad when a poster gives us his heartfelt opinion he is blasted by people that don't share his view point..........I do...he is right......the excuses used about the copyright problems are a complete crock....but a great out..........DCI truly dropped the ball here....they have to fight in a business like manner the fight that could bring familiarity back to corps...very interesting that TV shows such as Glee use these same tunes.....and the show is off the chart popular. Drum Corps and Bands eat their own with the adjudicators and creative gurus (I use the term loosley)dictating certain styles and gendres that will put this activity into the opera category.....bring entertainment back..and you may find the number of people at shows and participating (# of groups) start to grow. may not have to be bumped by spelling bees on ESPN (not that there's anything wrong with that?!)
That was a good post thank you.
Hardly anyone is blasting him. If everyone was just blasting him, this thread wouldn't have lasted 15 pages.
I understand what he's saying, I just disagree.
I, as well as plenty others, are greatly entertained by current shows, especially shows he listed as primary examples of how the shows are not entertained.
No need to act like a victim, and I'm sorry today's shows aren't entertaining for YOU. I will continue to support DCI with my money and my presence until it reaches the point where it doesn't entertain me anymore, at which point I'll bow out.

They want to fill the whole hole?
-
I've always though this would make an AMAZING show.
Maybe for a trumpet or mello soloist.
(yeah it's a saxophone. shh.)
-
I know that as of last week, Vanguard was looking for at least one Baritone to fill a whole.
No idea if that's been taken care of though.
-
you mean taste exists?
NO WAY!
I know, groundbreaking stuff here.

I ended up seeing this show twice, and can safely say it's my favorite show of the year.
Great tunes, and BRILLIANT arranging.
Hornline sounds great, drumline sounds solid. If they can clean up the visual (trainwreck at points... :/) then I think they'll do very well at finals.
-
I would think up some long, well thought-out rebuttal to your point, but I just can't other than to say I disagree completely.
Your examples (BD and Phantom anyway, I haven't seen Glassmen) lead me to believe that we just have two different sets of expectations.
I really enjoyed BD's show, and had chills throughout Phantom's show. In fact a friend at a show with me was crying by the end of Elsa's.
So in conclusion, I don't know what to tell you.

Maybe they had a high age out rate last season......just a guess
I know that a lot of the students who followed Rennick (at least from the pit anyway) are his students at UNT as well.
If I were in that situation I would pick teacher loyalty over corps loyalty.

I tried to hum SCV’s show, but it gave me a hernia!
Yeah, that's a fair point.
It's still great music though.
Maybe I'm just weird, but I always seem to be leaving shows humming music from SCV's shows.
Especially the Bartok show from last year.

Have you checked out some of the reviews from this season (and even the last several years)? How many times have people stated "The music wasn't very memorable"...west coast reviews included. Don't know about y'all but....good and great music is always memorable...be a song you heard on the radio, a song at a concert....etc....
I believe I just told you that there is plenty of memorable music in the shows this year.
Blue Knights are playing some of the greatest wind band pieces ever, Blue Devils playing Burt Bacharach, Cadets playing Amazing Grace will be one of the best moments in DCI this year.
Phantom playing Romeo and Juliet in addition to Verdi's and Mozart's Requiems.
Honestly, what more could you want?

I can’t tell you what I don’t want, but I certainly can tell you what I do. I want music with a melody. I just saw an interview with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. He talked about how important a strong melody is when writing for Broadway. That little string of notes that you’ll find yourself humming or whistling long after the performance is over. I want shows that tell a story, full of emotion. For the most part modern DC has been all about cramming notes and proving how physically fit the members are by running around the field at 160 bpm.
Have you watched any of the shows this year?
At least on the west coast, there aren't any shows like that. (except MAYBE the Cadets)

This could actually be really awesome...
-
Ligeti's Six Bagatelles for wind quintet.
That would be AWESOME.

Blue Devils: Boom.

That Circus Gallop for Player Piano made me think of Nancarrow.
I could see BD doing a Nancarrow player piano study. that would be awesome.
-
Great review Wes, I agree wholeheartedly with the SCV comments (and everything else for that matter).
While we're calling it like we see it, how ridiculous do the string sounds on the synth in Phantom's show sound?
I feel like it takes A LOT away from the impact of the show.

Man, OP is hatin' on the Lauba.
Better than Hard.

Ok so my computer is actin' up something fierce, so I'll just leave a few notes here.
-I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE BK's show. Brilliant arranging and just a lot of fun to listen to and watch.
-Vanguard's drumline is absolutely incredible. And, as much as it pains me to say it, it will be the only saving grace of the corps this year... (unless something drastic happens)
-PR misses Paul Rennick. The line sounded alright, but the writing is just not great. Hornline sounds awesome though.
-Easily my favorite BD show since '07.
-The Cadets show is as well crafted as any I've ever seen. It's impossible to watch that show and not be impressed.
-SCVC is going to be awesome once they iron out some things.
-PC has the best corps they've ever fielded. Really fun show, big sound.

Great show tonight, I'll be starting a review shortly.

After looking at the numbers from 10 to 13 right now and the trend over the last 14 days I think Troopers get 12th and this is why:
BK started with 82.4 and has gone up 1.5 an average of .1 per day
Troopers started with 74.25 and has gone up 5.6 an average of .4 per day
GMen started with 77.65 and has gone up 4.2 an average of .3 per day
Madison started with 78.55 and has gone up 3.70 an average of .26 per day
There are 17 days left until Indy so if this trend continues here are the 10-13 standings:
10th place GMen with 86.95
11th place Madison with 86.67
12th place Troopers with 86.65
13th place BK with 85.60
I know there is a long way to go, but this illustrates that it can be done. All the kids can do is work as hard as they can and let the chips fall where they may. As Terri would say: "Ooooooohhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
I don't think that trend will continue, and here's why:
BK is better than all three of the corps you have listed ahead of them, with maybe the exception of the scouts.
I love Troop, and I love their show, but BK deserves to beat them at this point and the 4+ point spread is completely justified as well.
Blue Devils 2011 show is elevator music?
