Welcome, Shosta - I used to march with the Chicago Connection (in the NW suburbs of Chi-Town, of course) my last year was '79. Sorry to say they're no longer active, though. As of now, if you're looking for a great Senior time in the Chicago metro area, I'd contact the Royalaires. I don't think they're "In" the city proper, but all those great drum corps cities surrounding the city are all within a short drive - or by rail from inside the city. Hope this helps - Thom B)
Thom,
Shostahoosier has been invited several times to RA camps. Maybe senior exhibition corps is not his thing? We held our winter rehearsals in Bensenville, IL this year and have been holding camps in Mooseheart this spring and summer. Both are in the western burbs, however, there are plenty of members that live in the city that would be happy to give Shosta a ride.
We are performing this sunday at the Cavaliers show in Naperville and holding camp at Mooseheart the weekend of August 27th before heading out to DCA in Scranton. Shosta is invited to stop by and check us out.
Dave
PS - BTW, we have a few Chicago Connection alums marching in the Big Blue.

Sound Pieces - Oliver Nelson
Very much a Blue Devils or Madison style piece.
Oliver Nelson's Sound Piece For Jazz Orchestra was played by Madison just last year.
-
I know "In Wartime" is - it was listed in their repertoire. I don't know about the other piece.
Mike
"Dynamite Sprint" is an original composition written by Dave Glyde.

We are playing a jazz arrangement of Stars & Stripes this season which calls for a piccolo sop. Does anyone know where there might be a used one for sale?

Probably just a mix up with names. Gus was Cosmo Barbaro. Barbaro and Sorenson were often on the same panel.
Regards,
John Swartz
John:
You are correct, some miscommunication. It is Gus "Cosmo" Barbaro. He is going to be our new percussion caption head for the 2005 season.
Thanks,
Dave

I've heard of Tom Sorensen who played snare in the Kities back in the 60's and was also their drum caption head for many years, but who is Gus Sorensen? Is it the same guy? If not, could someone give me some background on Gus? Where and when did he march? What corps did he teach and when?
Thanks.

Saw RA on Saturday from the end zone and as always, was blown away! Love the new music (especially the cool arrangement of Strike Up the Band), and was impressed with the slightly more modern drill!
The RA / Kiltie post-show party at George's was a hoot!! Very well attended! Got to see lots of old friends, and met lots of new ones. I was particularly impressed with Bill Morgan's surprisingly good memory of every lyric in that famous back of the bus song that sounds suspiciously like "Ghost Riders in the Sky"! I haven't sang that song with Bill since 1984, and he was perfect! Can't wait to do it all again sometime soon!

JC:
It was good to meet you, Jerry, Chris and Jim Dittrich at George's after the show. As always. I enjoyed hanging with Mac, my bud from St louis, as well as other Kilties that marched RA in 2002 like Adam, Jeff and Mike Kaufman.
Thanks to Mike Phillips for the invitation, it was indeed a hoot!
All the best to the Mad Plaid this summer!

For anybody that play's on a G Kanstul soprano, I notice that my lead pipe bends outward. It has been that way since I bought it brand new. I will try to explain. Hold your horn so you are looking down at it. Follow the lead pipe from where the mouthpiece is down to the first curve in the pipe by the water key (spit valve) Does the pipe seem to go outward to the right? I put in a picture that might help explain. Sorry for the bad drawing skills. :(
Yep, my Kanstul Powerbore #5884 is like that too.

I have no clue what's up with the scores? But for my money the Coats have a wonderful sound and blend. Doug Thrower's arrangements just keep getting better and better every season, and Larry Hershman and the design team continue to do an outstanding job selecting the music.

1981 Sky Ryders
I'd have to agree with Erin, the '81 Sky Ryders had a great contra line. In fact, the entire horn line was outstanding! Mainly because of John Simpson, their brass caption head (and Erin's father).

that article is very well done. Kudos to the writer and DCW
Chris is no longer with Drum Corps World. The articles "Inside the Arc" are written for DCI and posted on the DCI website.

Aint gonna happen Chris. We have no interest is fielding a competitive senior corps. Heck, it's a major effort for us old-timers just to do the exhibition gigs. If competitive senior corps is your thing, I'd recommend our Mad Plaid friends in Racine. Great group of folks!
