  1. I've heard a persistent rumor that Truman Crawford put in his will that all his arrangements of drum corps tunes would be put out into public domain. Anyone know if there is any truth to that, and if so where to get them? Seems like that would provide plenty of patriotic tunes.

    Scott,

I checked with Truman's daughter Cindy. She indicated that The Commandant's Own Marine Drum & Bugle Corps have all of Truman's arrangements and will not give permission for anyone to use those charts.

  2. Had a great impact on the drumcorp scene. Corps like Blue Devils, Madison and Crossmen played his music. Born in Concord, CA. RIP!!

Many corps have played Brubeck charts. Boston, Spirit of Atlanta, Anaheim Kingsmen, 27th Lancers, Troopers,Crossmen,Blue Devils and Bridgemen to name a few...but not Madison.

  3. Am I correct in saying that Jonathan Vanderkoff wrote the drill for Star of Indiana in 1993? Maybe possibly 1992 also? I believe 1991 was Zingali's last season writing.

1991 - Todd Ryan, George Zingali

1992 - Todd Ryan, George Zingali, Dr. Len Kruszecki

1993 - Jon Vanderkolff, Todd Ryan

  4. DCW spilled the beans in the May issue.

    The show is called GlassWorks

    Mishima - Philip Glass

    Original Music - Poulan/Ferguson

Beyond Borders from Etheopia iii - James Horner

    Symphony No. 3 - Camille Saint-Saens

Thinking this should have been the 50th anniversary show.

Just to clarify, Brian Hickman provided Drum Corps World with the show title and list of composers only. He did not provide any source music titles, and our repertoires listing in the May issue does not include any source music. So who really "spilled the beans" euphman89?

  5. A little history on Malaga "From Stan Kenton - This Is An Orchestra" by Michael Sparke

"Roger Schuller, the jazz band director at Millikin University contacted Bill Holman in the late 60's and told him how much he loved Malaguena, and asked if Bill would write a chart for his jazz band that was somewhat like it.Holman came across a town called Malaga on a map of Spain, and that is how he got the title. Kenton went to a concert where Schuller's band played Malaga and Stan liked it so much he got a copy from Roger, so it came to the Kenton band through the back way. Malaga certainly received greater recognition through Kenton than it would otherwise have gained, and Stan played it frequently until 1974, but even so Holman's original composition never achieved quite the iconic status of the even more spirited and instantly recognizable Malaguena."

"The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, three Christmas downloads soon will be here. A show for next season, reframed from our past, the music exciting, the movement quite fast. So Facebook on Christmas to hear our good cheer, and fill up your iPod with songs from last year."

  7. Even if it ain’t all it seems, I got a pocketful of dreams

    Baby, I'm from New York

Concrete jungle where dreams are made of

    There's nothing you can't do

    Now you're in New York

These streets will make you feel brand new

    Big lights will inspire you

Hear it for New York, New York, New York!

On the avenue, there ain't never a curfew, ladies work so hard

Such a melting pot, on the corner selling rock, preachers pray to God

Hail a gypsy cab, takes me down from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge

Some will sleep tonight with a hunger far more than an empty fridge

I'm gonna make it by any means, I got a pocketful of dreams

    Baby, I'm from New York

Concrete jungle where dreams are made of

    There's nothing you can't do

    Now you're in New York

These street will make you feel brand new

    Big lights will inspire you

Hear it for New York, New York, New York!

It's official on the Scouts' website today...the closer is "Empire State of Mind"!

  8. Ed was a fellow Drum Corps World staffer and dear friend for over 30 years. I loved hanging with him at shows, talking drum corps in the off-season and providing material for his DCW "Trivial" column. I last saw him at the "Drums On Parade" show last summer where we had a nice chat, and of course, I bought him a beer at the tailgate party.

Rest in peace Triv, I'm certainly going to miss you.

  10. Listen to Argonne's version of Fanfare from 73, then Guardsmen's from 79, then Blue Devils 87 version and it's a great sort of physical timeline as to how horn sounds and arrangements progressed in the earlier years of DCI. (Although some would say Sandra Opie's hornlines were light years ahead of their time, so maybe the timeline gets screwed up.)

Also listen to a recording of Keith Markey's arrangement of "Fanfare" performed by the 1968 Air Force Academy Drum Corps...where it all began.

  11. Musicality is optional. I hope the judges don't start rewarding "screech garbage" again.

    I picked my words carefully.

    Not carefully enough.

"Musicality is optional"? Do you really believe Donnie VanDoren and his brass staff would tolerate any form of "garbage" playing?

"The Scouts have a few select positions available in the horn line. In particular, we are looking for lead trumpet players with exceptional range. If you are interested in auditioning, please contact Dann Petersen at director@madisonscouts.org"

"Double Cs consistently and strong would put you on upper lead and/or solo work."
