  1. Belleville IL and immediate 'burgs surrounding in late 50's - early 60's (total pop 50,000) had 13 -15 (2 -3 all girl), yes most were small, but rivalries were intense.

Well, I don't think there was actually 13 to 15 corps in the Belleville area back in the 50's or 60's, but Belleville did have four corps during those decades...The Black Knights, Millstadt Crusaders, and two all girl corps the Bellettes and Gabrielettes.

  2. Carrie Fund (now Zimny) was doing some quite innovative guard work, playing off of her groundbreaking work with the Marian Catholic High School band,

    Michael,

I think you mean Kari Neuleib who is the daughter of Bill Neuleib, director of the Knights. She was the guard caption head for the Knights and went on the be the guard caption head for the Freelancers. She's married to John Zimny. Her brother Greg was also an alum and on the Knights brass staff for many years as a tech, caption head and arranger.

  3. I would love to see some old school Chicago Cavaliers and Royal Airs duke it out, considering the long history between them.

While there was a rivalry between the Big Blue and the Green Machine, along with the Skokie Vanguard, Norwood and Black Knights, I'm not aware of any "long history" between these two corps. In fact, the Royal-Airs were only around for ten years.

Now the Cavaliers and certain eastern corps back in the day is another story.

  7. This is great news for the Midwest - a real honest-to-gosh Golden Age senior corps. I wish good health and long life.

Please don't make the mistake RA made in 2003 by hiring

DCI instructors; after marching a great 2002 and wowing the crowds, the next year they had RA starting in the middle of the field instead of the starting line, dragging their flags on the grass, DCI-style snake-dance single-file drills, all that stuff. It was the beginning of the almost-end for RA.

The Reilly Raiders were fighting off a similar modernist infiltration about that same time. Stay real, guys! Do what you do best.

While those "DCI Instructors" had been involved with DCI corps, they were also alums who marched in the Royal-Airs in the 60's. The RA show design and music from '03 to '05 was still old school drum corps with company fronts, color presentations and concert selections. The "beginning of the almost end for RA" had nothing to do with the drill or music.

  8. I would like to hear this piece...I've been looking on itunes, but can't seem to find it. What Glass work is Man in the Bath from?

    Metheny,

Check your PM. Man in the Bath can be found on Amazon.com in the box set "Philip On Film", but it's expensive even for a used set.

  9. I LOVE Jack Bevins. Who's spearheading the nomination? You should have one letter of nomination and up to four letters of support.

Bill Cook always said that NO ONE did a better job of getting a corps down the road than Jack Bevins.

I recall on one occasion the corps accidentally left Jack behind after a contest in the midwest with no place to stay and no money. Ah, but Boo saved the day by putting Jack up for the night and then driving a few hundred miles out of his way to get him to the next venue where VK was performing! (one of many priceless stories from the "Boo Archives", not to be mistaken for the infamous "Boo Chronicles")

  11. Dear Drum corps friends!

On January 13 2008 the drum corps world lost a great friend.

Harvey Wingo passed away suddenly yesterday.

For those of you that knew him please keep him in your hearts and prayers as well as his family.

Funeral arrangements will be posted soon.

    Mike Davis

I am very shocked and sad to hear this news. Harvey was a great guy and friend I've known for many years. My thoughts and prayers are with Lois and the entire Wingo family.

  12. Humor impaired much?

BTW Great camp. Kilties had 43 horns in attendance with a number excused or unable to attend for weather reasons. Battery is all but full. Had a chance to hear Scott Stewarts presentation for the 2008 Production and they actually got into the opener a bit. Fairly certain there havent been too many corps who have played Praetorius.

2008 Kilties led by Stewart will definitely be entertaining. Before you or Lazarus or whichever alter ego say it, this in no way denigrates either previous Sr Kiltie years nor Jr Kilties.

    Dan,

Just as an FYI, the music is not Praetorius, it's "in the style of" Michael Praetorius and actually comes from the Bob Margolis wind ensemble piece called Terpsichore. Crown played the 4th movement in their 1997 "Postcards from Britian".

  13. Rich --

Congrats on your upcoming celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Royal Airs' founding.

Just curious: what's in the works to celebrate all your greats and great-greats from back in the day? I've collected a number of stories about Sie Lurye and Truman Crawford and Mitch Markovich and the wild and wacky Ken Nolan :) in Building the Green Machine. Not to mention your fabulous double-championship 1965 year. Let me know if there's anything I can contribute or any way I can help. As a devoted student of drum corps history, I'm happy to.

Cheers, and good luck with your open house!

    [/quote

Actually 1965 was a triple-championship year for the Chicago Royal-Airs as they won VFW Nationals, American Legion Nationals and CYO Nationals.

  14. I was in Atlanta on the 45 yardline half way up in premo seats. Boston, Carolina Crown and Troopers were special.

Boston was incredibly entertaining. They also happen to be my favorite uniform. I've not dug a uniform so much since Belville Black Nights of the '70's.

    That's the Belleville Black Knights.

  15. I was just visiting the Royal Airs and Men of Brass.

It was out standing playing all of Dads old arrangements.

    But I got to thinking.

All of us old timers have a blast out here in the east playing in alumni corps.

Why doesn't the mid west follow our example and do the same.

Just look what has been produced so far.

The Royal Airs got things rolling in 2002.

Not sure what happened before that. I wasn't in the loop.

    Cavies.

    Madison

    Men of Brass

These corps teased us with those great old arrangements.

    WE WANT MORE!

I want you guys to have what we have out here.

The jr's really didn't have the sr. corps out there that we had back in the day.To feed into as they aged out.

So I imagin there are alot of folks out there who need drum corps.

We all need a hobby. Something that fulfills us.

It's bad enough getting old. LOL

Just keep in mind, that alot of your fellow alumni don't have the memorization skills they once had. Nor do their bodies work as they once did.

Keep it simple. Keep it cheap! And do not turn your fellow alumni away for any of the reasons stated above.

If they can still play, that's all you need.

    It's not us and them.

    It's drum corps.

    We are ALL family.

We need to take care of our own.

    Cindy,

Fellow alumni being turned away? That's news to me.

Most who are currently marching alumni corps in Chicago know what the reasons are...and it has nothing to do with turning people away.
